niektb
With the research being ended it is now ready to get it in game. Here is the research plus additional info about sizes and stuff:http://www.wildfiregames.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=18443The Vikings will feature the following ships that need to be modeled: Knarr: MerchantSkeid: WarshipKarvi: Merchant/Warship hybridDrekar (or Dragon ship): Elite warshipSimple Fishing ship. Edit:This is the correct line-up:Fishing ship.Knarr: MerchantKarvi: Merchant/Warship hybridSnekkja: WarshipDrekar (or Dragon ship): Elite warship They pretty much look like each other but feature different abilities and sizes, and they should feature different ornaments (f.e. Drekar should have a dragon at bow and stern. the Knarr and Karvi should have some cargo onboard.) I highly recommend shieldwolf's pdf for a quick overview:https://dl.dropboxusercontent.com/u/47464522/viking%20research.pdfFor the viking fishing ship we should use the basic viking design posted on the last page. Stan`
Those drawings are nice, but do you want it to be as complex ? There are a lot of wood planks everywhere.
niektb
Well, they really had those way of constructing. They are so-called 'clinker-built', (left part of the image):http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Clinker_(boat_building)But that of course should be done by texturing. Stan`
I meant the transversal bars and the number of ropes
niektb
Yeah, I think so. That are the places the soldiers would sit, and additional reinforcement for the hull.
Stan`
Here is a boat, (The Last of the PDF) and the shield variations, in it since they will be needed when adding shields to boat.VikingBoat.7z
Radagast.
Wow. I hadn't expected it today. You're my master. I can imagine a horde of vikings sitting in there. The shields, where do they go? At the side for protection. Or as row-holders?Btw. I had expected the rope being on the other side for limiting the force of the wind's influence. Those vikings seem to think the other way round.Edit: Now we probably even need tar resource ... as vikings used it quite a lot for sealing their ships I think. At the side for protection. Or as row-holders?I don't know there weren't any, this is the basic design ship .Btw. I had expected the rope being on the other side for limiting the force of the wind's influence. Those vikings seem to think the other way round.Well that should be researched then Edit: Now we probably even need tar resource ... as vikings used it quite a lot for sealing their ships I think.Tar ressources ? for me tar are obscure linux ressources for compilers ^^
Radagast.
Okay .. I just saw it in the research PDF of shieldwolf. It's fine. just that there are two more ropes on the other side. Not at the utmost end / far side .. but rather where the Sail covers the ship. Probably you even have ropes there. Excuse the noise.tar = goudron, bitumeThx for the ship. We will need the new attack type then. To conquer them.

niektb
As already said through IRC: Those shieldcolors do not match very well in most cases... (And you should bring in some transparancy in the shields for the players color)Edit: but it is certainly an improvement in comparison with the former! Stan`
@niektb you know you will just have to modify the shields on the texture Remove the areas you want and that´s it

niektb
Looks good!Just to make sure: which ship are you currently creating?(Since I'm not sure if these are the correct proportions for a drekar which the dragon head points to: 36m long and 3.5m wide)And the rowing stations should be planks rathers than blocks:
Stan`
This is the longboat, using the longboat in the game. 4000 tris. For reference quinquerreme has 7000 trisHmmm I'm not sure. Since vikings were able to walk between rows.maybe that would be nice for a variation
niektb
Well, I just wanted to know how large it was. You should be able to see the length and the width I suppose...

niektb
Oh I know why. I was making the first while you were talking about the last X)I was talking about a drekar.Let's stick to a 7:1 ratio for the drekar, that is good.In the meanwhile we should think on how to differentiate the visuals for every ship. All proportions are correct now.I was thinking of adding a viking unit on the front like this :

niektb
Nice to see that you got the rowing animations working! My last wishes: - remove the dragon head from the prow (as communicated through IRC) - the center of the sail texture does not exactly tile (the stripe is smaller than the others) and maybe give the sail some curve to let it look like as if the wind blows (if possible) - the idle pos looks best if the rows are in the water I guess. - raise the bow and the stern somewhat (not much, only a little): Edited May 5, 2014 by niektb
