  1. Well, I don't wish to offended the great people at HG, but some of their forums are a good example of this, especially AoMH's. I post there twice a month but read them on a regular basis, and I've encountered lots of spam and flames. My fingers sometimes really itch to click the delete and ban button that's not there when browsing those forums :D

Also depends on which public you have, older people are usually easier to handle.

  2. There are many things I take for granted so it would be a hard choice. I'll pick a few random things:

    - it's the inside that's important, not the appearance of someone

    - people should be friendly if possible, no need to shock or act annoying if it's not needed

    - you should have an ideal in life

    - regard everyone as equal, except those who don't do this, regard them as inferior beings (well, I'm not so sure about that one, Ghandi for example showed that there is also another option)

    - as a follow up to the one above: do not regard people with less social skills as inferior, do not treat them as kids (I had a really big long fight with the so-called 'social' kid in the class who kept critising some people who had bad social skills, if there's something I hate it's such a mentality, too bad many people are like that)

    - violence is a big (read: HUGE) no no

    - the earth is flat

    - laugh if someone keeps telling bad jokes or has bad humour (see above) :D

  3. The science concerning prehistory was first established in the 19th century as a reaction against the Biblical interpretation. The most important sciences in this area were archeology and geology, of which Jacques Boucher de Perthes, Jean-Baptiste Lamarck, Georges Cuvier and Charles Drawin are the most important representatives.

The human past can be divided according the following criteria:

    1. Text

Does a society have a written tradtion or not?

Prehistory means societies or civilisations without any texts, ranging from the first humans until circa 3000 B.C. (in the Middle East), 2400 B.C. (Indus valley) or 58/57 B.C. (conquest of Gaul by Caesar).

Protohistory is used for cultures not knowing how to write but are known by writings of other civilisations (eg. Greek texts about the Celts).

    2. Technological evolution

In the classical period a golden, silver, bronze and iron age was used (Lucretius). Evolution went regressive, meaning from good to bad.

Since the 19th century three periods are used and evolution went progressive, from less good to good.

The three period system, made popular by Christian Jens Thomsen:

Stone age: period when weapons and tools were made of stone, bone or other materials. Little to nothing was known about metals.

Bronze age: period when weapons and some tools were made of copper or bronze and when little to nothing was known about iron.

Iron age: period when bronze was replaced by iron.

These three periods can be divided in other periods:

Stone age: Paleolithicum (early or old stone age), Mesolithicum (middle stone age) and Neolithicum (young or late stone age).

There is also a Chalcolithicum (copper age), between the stone age and bronze age.

    3. Economic evolution

Three divisions: Hunters, Hunters/collectors, Food producing people.

    4. Antropologic evolution

For this theory a certain civilisation goes through several stadia. In respective order:

Band: Less then 100 individuals, several core families living together. There is no leadership, nor specialisation (eg. no people who only make food or only look after the children). They are nomadic and live in temporary camps.

Tribe: less then 1000 individuals. Known for the first cultures producing food. They are either nomadic or sedentary. No real leaders yet, rather temporary leaders. Hierarchy is based on age and sex.

Chiefdom: 5000 - 20.000 or more individuals. Political power is centralised with a 'chief' (hereditary). The chief also has the religious power and usually a central temple or sacred place. The people are more specialised.

State: not prehistoric, more then 20.000 individuals. The society is based on a class system, starting with peasants and the plebs, traders, priests and warriors, ending with the leading class or royal family.

That's it, next one will be about the Flaura and Fauna during the prehistoric age.

  4. LCDs are actually not bad for your eyes, but CRTs are. CRTs flash constantly, but you almost don't see it because it's so fast. But when I switch from LCD to CRT in a minute I can notice the difference and the CRT hurts your eyes badly.

I suggest an LCD, although it's more expensive, not that great for extreme gaming and native resolution settings. It's good for your eyes though, doesn't take much space and it's bigger, a 15inch LCD almost equals a 17inch CRT.

Another problem is colors: how they look depends on how you position the screen (brightness). Not great for a graphic artist.

But still, I like it a lot more then a CRT, would never switch back (actually I can't, I'm using a laptop :D).

  5. Because she's smarter then you Tim :D

Hmm, I would buy a '64 Fender Jaguar, a Fender cyber twin amp, a Fender reverb tank and one of those nice Fender reissue reverb amps. Next to that probably a Mosrite guitar, a Gibson Les Paul custom (also a guitar), a Guild hollowbody jazz/rockabilly guitar, a Gibson firebird and a bunch of retro guitar effects. Then a nice Hammond organ with Leslie speakers, a fender bass guitar and amp and some other small instruments.

Well that would be about 300.000$, the rest would be put on a bank account.

  6. Lol I'm not an expert. If I check my Lan connection it sais that and Telenet owns 80% of the cable network of Flanders and is known to be extremely fast (telenet to server of telenet download rate usually around 800Kb/sec). I could be wrong though, but please let me live in my ignorance and think I have the eh..longest :D

@Tim, like Jordan said, Kazaa isn't illegal and it wasn't me using it but people living in the same house. So I'm innocent, no need to ban myself :P

  7. Yep, the 120,000 refers the army of Cyrus. But the approximatly 1 million refers to the king's army. Of course it could have been the translation that is bad, I asume you've read the original version so you'll be right.

Thanks for clearing that up about Xenophon.

  8. I think no stone walls or towers is incorrect. Celts are known to build fortified cities, and I beliefe some had stone walls and towers, maybe Alesia and Lutetia in Gaul.

Not sure about this but I think some historians doubt that the Picts were real Celts, they are quite different then the other British Celts.

Druids were not blacksmiths, they are comparable to priests. They had the most power among the Celts. The Romand tried to destroy the Druid culture of the Celts because they used to be at the base of many riots and uprisings against the Romans. They also did human sacrifices (a young beautiful man was sacrificed each year I think).

I think the concept of a High King is quite rare among the Celts. Sometimes there were noblos controlling huge regions, like Vincengetorix or some British queens and kings. They were chosen mostly by the free people, they even had election campaigns like we know now, promising all kind of false things and giving free beer and food :)
