  1. Atlantis... (Or Atlantide, being for me its name, in French)

Did it ever existed? Can't be sure. That's what I basically think. But, I found a very interesting (french-language only) site that is very useful whhen discussing this topic. Most of the ideas I'll poitn out here come from that site (I'll give reference at the end).

First of all, I think that we should fully take what Plato described. It our basis of analysis. The site I pointed out makes the same but adds some things further :

    1. They put the story in the context of Mythology [Greek, but also Mesopotamian, Egyptian, Bharatian, Scandinavian, Celtic etc.] and then try to see if some sort of Atlantis (this name being not the real name of the Country, as it is said in the Critias) was written in those myths.

    2. Taking Plato, the author of the site takes all what we know scientifically about the aimed period (-9600 before the Christian Era) and looks if something could have happened.

What should be notice concerning this last point is that something did occur. It was the End of Paleolithic and the beginning of Holocene, the last warming. The Neolithic Revolution came on and agriculture developped. The sea level did go up (some 100 meters).

During Würm time, there was a litteral continent around the Atlantic sea, because of the Ice that went from Europe to North America (so Plato's description would be qquite good). There was an easy current that went from Gibraltar to Antillia and back to Gibraltar by those time (The Gulf Stream is a remmanent, but it is no good any more), so to go through the Ocean was possible (but maybe not easy : i.e. Ulysse). The Caraibean plate isn't normal, also. Something could have happen there. The author gives more, and all Plato goes quite perfectly right with what is said.

This pointed out, the author look in Mythology. In the indo-european culture, there is common myth of a war between two people (Illiade, Ramayana). That seems strange. The deluge is something common all over the world.

He also looked for "Orichalque", and he have a strange theory that fits : it could have been Aluminium, as for it came directly from the ground in the Antillias. The author gives a great account of it, and also a strange note about the Roman Empire about some strange, new metal.

And, he looked for traces of the Atlantean Power, where did it go? At least, he's sure that most of the archeological traces are gone for ever, with the disaster of Atlantis. But there may be indirect traces. He gives an account for The triple-circle, the Svastika (a world's old symbol for chance... but new one for nazism), Tauromachie, and some other.

He also looks at the American People, are they descendants of Atlantis? He thinks not, if Atlantis ever existed. But they maay had an influence, by some nostalgic Egyptians (that knew the history of Atlantis) that went back to the West (and therefore finding some people to show civilisation...). Egyptian and Mayan culture looks quite alike, even with big differences. So there may be a link there.

So... I don't know if it ever existed, but there must be some truth behind the Myth of Atlantis.

As for location, I think that it may be in the Caraîbes, though the whole Empire would have included part of the American Continent and extensions in Western Europe and Africa (and maybe elsewhere).

P.S. : I read the Myth od the Cavern and the Atlantis supposed myth. While the first explcitly states that it comes from imagination, Plato, by his characters, tries to convince that the story is true. That's a strange point about thinking it's a myth : why would a great philosoph as him would do this?

P.P.S : Here is the site L'épopée atlante

  2. Indeed it's way more complicated. Every single element can change everything. That is what some calls the Butterfly effect (because of the way the first people came to describe it : If a butterfly flaps in the Atlantic region, a storm may develop on the Western Pacific shore.). But middle species may not be found for they may not exist. Changes could, theoritically, occur within years if the change is big enough. But we know stages, that's what I showed, but more is in there.

  3. I dislike Ido for one reason : it kept an Esperanto form, kicking what made Esperanto : Ido has lesser regularity.

As for Interlingua, I indeed pass by it. It's interesting, but tries to make in a new latin out of most latin words. Esperanto is here broader (but not at is best). But, phonetically, it's closest to best, for it is fully intergrated.

There are two languages that I would like to learn, Lojban and Sanskrit. The first is reputated for its logicalness. The second is for it's expressivity : not because the language has a lot of word to say the same thing (as in French) but because it plays on little differences.

As for a perfect language, can't tell apart, because it will never be perfect.

A great language for me would be a language where you can distinguish the most things one could (or make it clear that you don't want to distinguish), but where the distinctions are clear. That's a hard task.

  4. Note that in some new versions of the Theory of Evolution, there seems to be a mixture of progressiveness and catastrophness. What I mean is that there are gradual changes but also drastic changes that occur within evolution.

Let's take our great example, Men.

In the old days (I mean, very old, millions of years), there was a group of Apes. Don't know what they were, but I know for sure they were not Chimp or Human (but they were both groups ancestors). Then, temperature went up, dividing Africa in about to regions : one with dense forest, another with arborical savana. In the dense forest parts, the Apes continued on their arborical lifestyle, while in the Savana, there were no more trees to live so.

So some died, because they were not able to live without trees, while other did survive, because they were, at least, able to survive. So life went on. The savana part breaked again later on, a part being more savana like (without any trees) the other still having some. So where there were no trees at all, the one that could survive without any tree would survive. (I assume that it's then that some Apes got fully on their feet)

Again, Africa got hotter, so the tree savana disappeared. On that time, Australopithecus afarensis disappears. In the what was the free savana have evolved some strange creatures, those Homo Habilis who were able to use rock. Were Afarensis used to live, evolved a people that could not use rock.

Later on, chiller! And those who were able to use rock and everything passed on as Homo Erectus.... Giving what we are.

But while there was no weather change, still evolution went on. Some acquiered by luck some useful caracteristic they kept. One of it, and were sure of this, is the birthday change. Women grew to have their kid earlier, so the head could pass through the vagina. Others would die, not being able to get the kid out.

So, evolution is a lot trickier then what we could think of what Darwin said.

  5. Yahoo! I was called the Melvillian :D

Oh well. I know my dream country is only mine and that noone can see it except if I draw or something like. And I don't have for now my flag with flag tissu (yeah, there are speacial tissues for flag, regarding colors : if you want a good flag, you must use those officialised color tissues.), an I actually only have a small black-n-white paper flag (the flag is supposed to be blue :D)... So I can't brandish it. But I shall get one before the end of this summer, for I want to have it for University....

I know online people that call me Melvi... But they were only chopping my good old Melville online name. And they were mostly girls.

I wonder if I should take "thee" as a respectful adress (as it is today) or as a familiar adress (as it use to be). In these forums, one cannot be sure.

  6. Sukkit

    FRENCH

As for plural, most oof the time, the s (x or z) doesn't change anything. Only with words al does it change something. (als gives aux. Note that now, they are both accepted, but I prefer the second to the first one. For me, "als" sounds like Joual, and I would use it only for Joual.)

But le and les is tricky. Le has the e sound of the pronoun "Je". It's almost like german ö but with more opened lips. As for Les, you dont hear the s if the next word begins woth a consonant, and the e is pronouced as è.

    ESPERANTO

Indeed, the language was made by mind, and it didn't come by natural evolution. And Zamenhof wasn't a good linguist, he was occulist . The vocabulary doesn't phonologically fit togheter (where Tolkien got his point!), and grammar is quite mechanical. As for the second point, it doesn't bother, as long as you can know what is what.

But, for the first part, I agree it is not perfect. But usage have brought a lot of interesting features to skip over that. What I imagine for this part is that Esperanto would, by any chance, evolve phonologically. But that will never come, as Esperanto is. A new language wwill be needed (but I don't want a new Ido... too "european"-copier).

    QUENYA

I'm used to this feature. In esperanto, we have the darn -n, but it helps to learn declensions. Now, I master it as if I was a native (because there are Esperanto-speaking natives) and I even use it to enhence Esperanto : see the difference :

La faligo de mi = My falling (I made fall something)

La faligo de min = My falling (I was made to fall)

(Note : "Normal" esperanto speakers never use that feature. Zamenhof did, but not always.)

Quenya has that feature also, but not in the same way.

But I learned to deal with declensions when I learn Japanese. That language is full of postpositions (something that looks like declensions) and I got used to insert them when I needed.

    THE 3 ISSUE

It is indeed the same sound, at least, as I can remember. At least I'm sure that black speech gh is. In an earlier transcription of my language, I used kh an gh instead of x and q. But then I prefered that last ones, because I wanted to have the less two letter phonemes possible.

    Qem! (Victory!)

  7. There seems to be a lot of regional parties in Spain...

As for Belgium, there are unnumerous parties!

Note : For Canada, I only included the official parties : those that will have their name on voting sheets. There are more listed, and I have no doubt that there are still more to represent every ideas that are in Canada.

  8. People don't seem to hate me that much. I guess I'll just go on. Akya knew that parts of this Forum I would like. But I like it all  I'm sure she's a maiden of some god that keeps an I on me. Even though we met not so long ago, she's able to sence what I'll like :D

  9. It's because you don't know me all. I have strange dreams. I am eager to discover, to learn and to debate on almost everything. I just like to learn about everything (except Celebrities... so useless. But I'll like to learn about movies and roleplaying etc.)

I am bizarre, but that is how I like myself. And I highly brandish my own flag to tell the World : this is who am, Human like You, different like everyone.
