  1. flip it around.

    a+bi = the 2002nd root of a-bi

consequentially, there will be 2002 of those roots :P But what you'll find is that they're cyclic, meaning, after the first 5 or 10 roots, they repeat themselves. Atleast I imagine they would be if you guys are doing this with nothing but pen and paper.

Also keep in mind that it's an ordered pair.

Finding complex roots is a relatively trivial task(easy, just time consuming sometimes). There's probably an easier way, but I haven't had complex for a few years, and I don't have my textbook to look back over to refresh my memory.

Anyway, that's the direction I would look in if I were you.

  2. no Zezar, you're not the only one that doesn't get along with his/her siblings :P

My youngest brother had me thrown in jail last June(cops refused to arrest me, he pulled some citizens arrest routine). We were living together and I caught him smoking marijuana in the house(not my style), and we got into it, I whooped his @#$%, and he called *sigh*

I won't go into a lot of detail, but lets just say he had that azz whoopin' coming to him :P

    PS

did I mention this was on my b-day? LOL

  3. PS: That isn't my usual desktop background. I chose that one for the screenshot for titilation purposes.

    *is titilated :P

Now if only I had some webspace laying around somewhere I might post my desktop(but then I'll have to figure out how to do that, lol).

I actually have webspace, but I'd have to go through a crapload of trouble to get access to it(Cox Cable), so I'm not going to bother with it. Anyone wanna host it for me?

  4. I don't know, do you really think the KKK would perform the rallies they do if noone showed up?

    I seriously doubt it.

By your same logic, I should go to a KKK rally and shout obscenities because there's no other way for me to let them know I don't like what they're doing.

  5. The thing they don't undestand is that, if they did it on purpose, they're giving them exactly what they wanted. If they didn't, they're unduly torturing them.

So why are they reacting the way they are? They should have just simply let it be, and gone on with their life.

  6. @Mike: but what about installing new apps? At that point I get lost because it's pretty complex

As Sphere mentioned, that really depends on the distribution that you use. Red Hat has rpm's(Red Hat Package), that you can click on, and they'll install just like a setup file on windows. Mandrake and Suse are based off of Red Hat so they use RPM's also. So, in Mandrake, it's a matter of finding the correct rpm, downloading, and going clickie ;) There are some possible problems(dependency issues), but, Mandrake has a tool called urpmi which will notify you of problems(a windows equivalent would be trying to install a program that requires a dll that you don't have). So Basically, it's as easy as it is in Windows :P

Myself, I use Gentoo, which is a source based distro(mandrake is considered an rpm based distro). It solves the problem a different way. It has a tool known as portage, which reads files called ebuilds. For example, say you want to install k3b(cd burning frontend for KDE), I'd simply tell it to install it, it would look on my system to see which dependencies I had, download, and compile them for me, then proceed to download, and install k3b itself. All with just 1 command. If I wanted to uninstall it, I could do that easily, also with just 1 command.

I personally use Gentoo, and love it, but it can be a bit tougher to get setup. Basically, Mandrake is easier to get setup, but *slightly* tougher to install stuff(you have to find the packages), while Gentoo is a bit harder to install, but easier to install/uninstall stuff. I'd also like to note that with Mandrake, most packages that you'll look for come on one of the Mandrake CD's.

I usually recommend Mandrake for people just getting into linux because they have *excellent* tools for configuring most things on your linux box.

My offer is still open CodeOptimist. If you want to check it out, I'll be more than happy to help you out with it, so you don't have to go blind like I did :P

Linux is like a religion. Once you get in, you'll wonder how you ever lived any other way.

  7. Many consider Knoppix to be the snazziest rescue CD ever made, lol. I tested it out once a few years ago when it first came out, and it seemed a bit slow. That was on a p2 233, so that may have been part of it :P

Myself, I just use the Gentoo liveCD if/when I need something to boot up. It's more likely to boot properly as it's not trying to configure everything on your comp, and if I'm needing it, I'll be working in the CLI anyway. That's not to take away from Knoppix, it does an awesome job(autodetects *very* well), just not my thing I suppose ;)

But regardless of which distro you use, just remember one thing...

    Tux R0x0r5 :P

  8. I think you'll be pleasantly surprised CodeOptimist ;) It doesn't have to be based around the CLI, and usually isn't for most people(I think I'm one of those few people that prefer CLI for 90% of the work I do).

Seriously. Obviously it still has the power that it always has(and more, with a few recent additions to the kernel), but there are Desktop Environments out there that most windows people will feel right at home in. It can be as complex as you want it to be :P

KDE has taken huge steps in this arena. So has Gnome, but it goes by a different philosophy, and so, for most people fresh from Windows, Gnome can be hard to get used to.

Now, the UI isn't nearly as task based as Windows XP/Longhorn, and it's lacking in games(although that's rapidly changing), but outside of that, there's nothing that Windows does that Linux currently doesn't(well, besides spread the blasterworm :P)

If you're ever interested in playing around with it, let me know and I'll hook you up :P Atleast then you'll be able to say Linux sux from experience :P

  9. Really though, Linux would be the best if it had the support and product range of Windows.

Linux has more products than Windows, they're just not the same products(IE doesn't run on *nix). You can also get support for it if you use a distro such as RedHat, Mandrake, or Suse.

The only real reason to not use Linux is because you don't want to. The only time I boot into Windows anymore is to play Starcraft ;)

  10. You know what I read?

"I don't want gay marriages to be legalized, so I'm gonna try my hardest to come up with a logical sounding reason"

By your same argument, hetero marriages that don't result in a child within x number of years should be automatically annulled. If you have hetero couples that can't have children, for whatever reason, they *are* allowed to marry.

So now you're stuck. You either have to

    a) admit that you just don't think homosexuals are entitled to the same rights as heterosexuals(read, less than human)., or

^_^ start prohibiting marriage between hetero couples if one of the partners is sterile, and annulling marriages that don't result in children after x number of years.

  11. 1) I'm about 99% sure that Mozilla will do this for you automatically, but since stay in windows 99% of the time, there goes my credibility ^_^

    2) Most of the time, you just have to enable "check if browser is main browser" in the given browser, and it'll ask.

    PS

    Opera is better ^_^

  12. If marriage is a religious institution, then the government has no place to regulate it or promote it alone without regard to other religions' institutions, etc.

The thing is that hetero couples get tax incentives, etc., just for being married, so it automatically puts it into the realm of the government. That doesn't mean the government can force the catholic church to perfrom weddings(that's a religious marriage), but they can still hand out marriage licenses to homo couples.

  13. Then let me rephrase

Just because you imagine that they're constantly sticking their peepee in each other's rear end? I hate to break it to you, but most homosexuals stick to strictly mouth to pee pee pleasure. And I doubt you have any idea the number of hetero couples that are involved in 'nether regions' play(men *and* woman).

There, now that's not so graphic is it? ^_^

  14. The sqrt mapping is not a bi-directional mapping. In order to get that quality, you'd have to limit the domain, which you're not doing here.

    In other words, 1= sqrt(1), but that doesn't mean that sqrt(1) = 1.

Anyone who has taken Complex Functions will have seen what I'm talking about(it's hard to explain without proper notation).

  15. After a while it get's *really* tiring to constantly hear 'you should', 'you shouldn't. yada yada yada. Everything reverts back to control. Why the hell can't you guys just live and let live?

I don't mind you guys have your opinions about which god is real, if he's real, how the world began, how you get into whatever heaven you believe in.

What gets on my nerves is when you force hardship on *other* people because of your beliefs. Who gives a darn if homosexuality is genetic or not? Does that change the fact that they're human beings?

I could easily set you up with a question such as 'should blacks be allowed to drink from the same water fountain as whites?'. Obviously your answer is going to be yes, but there was a time when it wasn't so. How then, is it any better for you to deny homosexuals the same priviledge as heterosexuals?

Just because you imagine that they're constantly plugging each other in the butt? I hate to break it to you, but most homosexuals stick to strictly oral pleasure. And I doubt you have any idea the number of hetero couples that are involved in anal play(men *and* woman).

And you think this is a good enough reason to justify *hurting* other people. I say let whatever god you believe in judge them, YOU allow them to live, just like any other HUMAN in this world.

By that same Token, do you really think Janet Jackson should be punished(I don't hear anyone mentioning the man who did the ripping)? Why, when *you* could put forth the minimal effort to just change the channel?

There, have I explained myself well enough for everyone?

  16. But we would be more wrong by allowing them to live in sin.

According to your own doctrine, all sin is equal so you need to find a better rationale than that.

Homosexual people are also known to be better off, on average, than heterosexual couples. They usually have higher social standing, and higher paying jobs, as well as better educations. Homosexuals aren't completely bad people.

But again, I don't think I have the right to tell them how to live.

  17. They go because church is the center of power, and allows for a vast amount of networking. These people aren't stupid, and if I were just a little less rebellious, I'd be doing the same thing(I'd eventually feel the need to voice my opinion, unfortunately).

I attended church with my landlord for the first time in YEARS this sunday, and I couldn't get over 2 facts

    1) how much power there was in that church(I don't mean religious power), and

    2) How many woman were obviously looking for a man. Hell, I was getting obvious looks from some of the married woman...

I seriously thought about going back just so I could tap a few of the better looking ones(married or no).
