  1. University started again here. Not really an excuse, I know. I must confess I also needed a break for awhile.

I would like to make this suggestion: how about me (or anyone) makes new posts about the Chapters (after reading them of course, just like we did till now) in a more quick succession? The good thing about having a forum is, that we can use it when it suits ourselves (when talking about time) compared to ordinairy reading groups. So people can just react when they feel like it.

It doesn't help when I have to slow down on only reading a chapter per week. I think it might be a good way to revive this.

    So, what about it :)?

  2. About Mim: can you imagine any race that is easy to enslave? I think it is only logical that any person would act defiantly if supressed into service. That is not a unique aspect of Dwarves. But it also doesn't mean that enslavement isn't possible.

  3. To get back to the topic of Magic: the Witch-King of Angmar had magical powers. Or indeed powers great enough to scare even Gandalf the White. The Mouth of Sauron has learned dark magics from Sauron himself. The Balrog battled with Gandalf when the last one tried to close a door with spells. etc etc

So indeed it seems that magical powers could be atained, but also that they weren't to be thrown around lightly. Maybe it demands a considerable amount of energy to summon a magical spell so that it is impractical to throw around fireballs in the heat of battle.

  4. But not too much mail, eh? And I mean that in an admiring sort of way ;-).

While I would be a bit hesitant to include female Human warriors, I am more open to female Elven warriors, because they would have more muscle strength than their Human sisters and Elven smiths are able to make lighter mail. On the other hand it can be argued that Elven maidens tend to be more pacifistic than their male counterparts.

I'm in dubio about this issue. I do however think that we should include women warriors just for the sake of feminism, how idealistic that may be. We intend to create a representation of Tolkien's work and altering it to include democracy, socialism and equal rolemodels wouldn't give credit to his work.

  5. I agree with Matteo here. Just because the professor was Christian, doesn't mean he rewrote the Bible with different names.

Good and evil isn't necessarily a Christian theme. And the fact that Morgoth was first a Vala and then went his own way, isn't unique to Christianity. Loki was a Norse god who didn't follow the others. As did Seth in ancient Egypt.

I also don't see Morgoth as totally evil. He is more like a dictator than blackness incarnate (in relation with Lucifer): he thinks he makes the best ruler of Arda and wants to shape it in his form, while Lucifer wants to doom mankind and hungers for chaos.

We also never explicitly heard that Morgoth is acting against the will of Eru. In fact he wasn't even thrown out of heaven after battling the others: he left for Arda like a few of his brethren.

Anyway, I just want to make clear that it's too easy to say that Tolkien's work is full of Christian believes, while it can be viewed on a more general scale.

  6. You mean like in BfME?  ... as in the Mines of Moria scenarios... ?

I think it would be better to compare indoor scenario's with those of WarCraft and StarCraft.

And I know the team has been brainstorming about the multiple layers (underground, aboveground) but I have no idea what they have done with that so far.

Anyways, would be nice for RPG scenario's but I find it hard to imagine where those scenario's should take place.

Wait, maybe there are a few things: Thangorodrim and the royal halls/dungeons of Elwë Singollo.

  7. Alright but, and correct me if I'm wrong, wouldn't the hand bars mean that if the shield is hit hard, it twists around in your hand?

It's just that I see to difficulties with the leather and that difficulty with the hand bar. And I think that Elves are smart enough to see it too.

Hmm, now that I think about it: are the hand bars a failsafe in case the leather breaks off?

In any case it's concept art, so that detail will probably not come into the game.

  8. The LotR only says that Hobbits are more closely related to Men than either Elf or Dwarf. Well, that's not too difficult, because technically, Dwarves and Elves aren't related to Men at all. In fact, the only relation is that Eru created Elves and Men, and Eru breathed life into Dwarves after they were created by Aulë.

  9. How about not taking things too realistic?

On the other hand: it's known that people reproduce more quickly in less wealthy areas, so maybe the same can be said for the humans that came in contact with Elves. I don't really see a problem here, as the game is only a representation of Arda: it doesn't have to render every single individual.

  10. Looks very good. But I don't understand how the shield can be held. Do I understand correctly that the leather is for hanging it over one's shoulder, while there is a handgrip for use in battle?

I thought that using leather strips to hold it in battle is far more practical. Or do I look at it from the wrong perspective? Or do I have no idea about melee fighting?
