Well, studies over the years have shown that death penalty is in no way effective to prevent people fro committing crimes ...

Then, it is morally paradoxical ... if death penalty is allowed, why not allowing euthanasia and abortion?

Then, most countries which still have death penalty in the world are dictatorships ... the US is really an exception ...

7)Is this vote going to solve the problem? I doubt it. Iraq's invasion brought Al Quaeda where it wasn't. Who knows what a foregin fostered government may cause?

that reminds me of Afghanistan ... a government that was run by religious foreigners ... and we see what it brought to the world ...

I thought that you may be interested in this:

the US have a very deregulated economy, so has Britain ... thses countries are the archetypes of Capitalism in the world. However, they both have huge deficits ... why? they said having tax cuts would lower the deficits ... well, decreasing deficits means increasing tax ... but no ... the US and Britain (among several oterhs including France) are trying to reduce deficits by decreasing tax ...

Let's take another example. Sweden ... Sweden is said to have a regulated economy after years of Socialism ... and we end up with a net profit of $14 billion (last year's figure) and the Swedish economy is one of the most thriving in Europe ...

Of course, it is not the country where you can earn millions ... but it is not the country either where you would be a slave worker ... the top 10% in Sweden earn 6 times as much as the low 50% ... in Britain (I do not have American figures), the ration is 13 to 1 ...

So, here is my question: has the world lost its sense of criticism towars capitalism? until the 1980s, there was another outcome: Communism. I am not saying I would favour communism (on the contrary actually), but at least, there was a choice. Now, even Communist countries (China) are becoming capitalistic (and worse) ... there could be other schemes, but politicians are only interested in capitalism ... even Socialists/Labour ...

    Voila :P

PS: sorry this is a little OFF TOPIC :)

well, first of all, I am shocked that the war has cost US$550 per person in the US!

Then, even if the elections were democratic, there will be a major problem ... who will the people vote for? a secular party that promised it will bring peace back or religious warmongering extremists? Well, I think the latter may win ... Iraq will turn into a new Iran with Ayatollahs and the Kurd and Sunni minorities will be persecuted ... I quite agree with Michael ... partioning Iraq into 3 separate States or countries would be the best ... but you have to consider Turkey which does not want to see a Kurd independent nation next to it ... etc ... etc ... so many problems!

I may just remain Curu if that is a problem ... otherwise, my IRL© name is BARRIE ... David BARRIE ... :P nice to meet you other David B.

There is a famous cartoonist in France called David BARRIER (same prounouciation so everybody spells my name the same) and a good rugby player whose name is also David BARRIER (another source of mistake), but mine is BARRIE ... like James Michael BARRIE (author of Peter Pan)

well, everyday, from school/work I can seen A340-500 and A340-600 (the longest commercial plane in the world ... even longer than the A380) and it si quite impressive ... the impressive one is the A300-600ST also known as "Beluga". It is the plane that carries parts of the A340 from all over Europe to Toulouse. I saw the first flight of the A340-600 ... it needed the whole runway to take off ... so I can imagine how long the runway has to be for an A380 :P

Black_Op ... that is not true ... on the website, there are some VERY old concept sketches of Edain culture. I have to admit that they are very old, but they are the only ones available at the moment ... However, it is not First Age Edain, but Gondorish style ...

    check it out here

    nice interview ;)

could we have a couple picture of your wife and yourself? ;)

anyway, as for the French translation, it is terrible ... it was done in the 70s as fast as possible because the French editor thought he could make good money after the successes in English-speaking countries.

I can't recall all of the "mistakes", but I can tell you that I read both versions (French when I was 14 and English when I reached 17) and I can tell you that the original version is far better (obviously). Often, some books are perfectly translated in French, but LotR was not ... I have to admit that the Hobbit is better translated...

Fondcombe (i.e. Rivendell) is to me totally not correct ... in the Hobbit, it was translated into Combe-Fendue which makes more sense to me.

anyway, it is just a detail ... only 2 or 3 people on these forums have read LotR in French :P
