  1. Hello all, it's been a while!

I am planning to do some gameplay videos again on my youtube channel but because it has been so long (about 3 alphas) I'd like to know more about the gameplay before uploading new videos so here are my questions (a lot of it and not in a special order!)

    - What is the best civ in Alpha 21 and why?
    - What is the worst civ in Alpha 21 and why?
    - What are good timings to reach phase 2 and phase 3?
    - What are the OP units ? (like slingers or sword cav or archer champs or whatever)
    - Are there New features that change old build orders considerably?
    - Do people use Corals and Fishing?
    - How are rams / elephants?
    - Are healers usefull now?
    - Is it faster to destroy or capture? (with citizen soldier and with champions)
    - What is a good timing to reach 300 pop if booming?
    - Who is the best player of the moment (I guess borg)?
    - Who are other good players I should try to cast for some commented videos?
    - Is there any special strategy lately like tower rush or fast champion or slinger rush?
    - What is a good timing to get first hero?
    - What is a good timing to get 20 champions?
    - What mods are Sufficiently advanced to do a video?

I'll watch some videos too but if someone can answer those questions it will help anyway!

    Thanks a lot!

  2. ffm used to do this with houses but it was too easy to punish (destroy/capture one house and everything is for gaia).

However this can be very useful in some cases, for example if you have a metal spot near your base but you cannot reach it. A barrack or a few houses on the edge of your territory and you'll reach it.

  3. 7 hours ago, causative said:

elexis, I think the wood gathering rates are fine as they are.  If women were significantly worse at wood gathering than men, then most rushes would be impossible because people would make very few women and would have enough soldiers to defend.  I would consider that boring.

I agree with that, the fact the women have a good wood gathering allows player to boom. And rush > boom so it terms of tactics it is good the way it is.

  4. Nice Guide Causative,

I have a few point to add:
    - When Hunting, use shift click and click behind the animal you want to hunt then click on the animal. That way the animal you hunt will "escape" in the direction of your CC --> faster gathering

    - Have a control group for your guy making houses, it helps a lot

    - When you get rushed, always keep in mind that your enemy has a bad economy so if you succeed you'll be ahead!

    - You can make a lot of villagers kill with two spearman cav (they two-shot villagers, so one-shot with 2 cav). Just run and click "H" near a villager, they will one shoot her and you can move away.

    - Watch Alekusu's video for build orders. Wait what?? :P

I'll make videos again from a21, my builds are a bit old now but there are many tricks in it

  5. Hi guys,

I've been playing lately on a20 and I would like to suggest something about champions.

I think that the fact that some civs have champ available in barracks, some in temples, some in fortress is a huge unbalance and won't be easy to make it fair.
Until now I thought that the solution could be to have all civ able to produce champ from barracks but playing on a20 made me change my mind. On a20 basically people rush for champions and it is kind of boring.

So I think that instead of putting all the champs in barracks, no civ should be able to produce them from barracks. All civ should have champs only available in fotress (or unique building). It would be more balanced and would reduce the champs race that we can see on a20.

    What do you think?

    Alex

    EDIT:
    I just saw this: http://trac.wildfiregames.com/wiki/Alpha21?version=43
Looking forward to see the balance on a21, the new train time on barracks is really good for the gameplay I think. My suggestion above might not have any sense on a21..

  6. I see.

Then if the developers team wants to keep champs in racks, fortress and other building, as xfs said, the production time needs to be balanced.

If we consider wood = stone (just to start discussion)

10 barracks cost 3000 wood. The equivalent is 3 fortresses.

So if producing time of champs from barrack is X sec, production time in fortress should be about (X*3)/10.

    What do you think guys?

    • Other civilizations can only train champions from fortresses or champion buildings, with severely limited production capacity. Possible balancing measure: increase the training time for champions from barracks.

I really agree with that, I love Seleucid but the fact that their champions cannot be trained in their barracks makes Seleucid hard to play late game.

Why aren't all champs available in barracks for all civ? is there an historical reason?

  7. In late game, I think that deleting all the women and the farms (50 women for 10 farms) and using 5 corrals with maybe 10 cav give you a pop advantage on your enemy (it's a pain in the *** to manage though)

Having 40 more champs than your enemy wins the late game.

I'm trying to find a way to use corals in early build orders but so far it's just more micro management and I cannot reach 140 pop in 10 mins using corals. I still need practice.

  8. 2) I don't think siege are OP in this alpha. It is so easy to capture. if you were able to capture 7 rams without any resistance, it is normal that you destroy your enemy base, not OP.

    3) At what timing did you have 50/70 men? Against AI, try to follow the following rule: 100 pop at 8min, 130 pop at 10min, 200 pop at 15min then do champions. Trust me you won't lose again vs medium AI with this population.

  9. You lost me here ^^

I can make a build order to get 11 soldiers in 5 min and rush with gauls or romans or any civ

I can make a build order (different one) to get 130 pop in 10min with gauls or romans or any civ

I cannot make a build order to rush in 5min and follow with 130 pop in 10 min with gauls or romans or any civ.

This is why I'm saying that the result of our game has nothing to do with civ but the key was scouting and tactics (rushing > booming).

    you said:

"What happens if I make defensive soldiers but you continue booming with women?"

The fact that now we need to ask ourselves these kind of question means, imho, that the game is getting really good in terms of strategy and tactics.

  10. Hum I simply do not agree with that,

" It was an attempt to match Celtic civs' economy at 10min. If you make soldiers early on for defense, the economy obviously suffers, and is more worse off in the long run than Celtic civs."

I have same tactics doable with all civs, rushing turtling booming, this has imho nothing to do with gauls and house building time (for example I can get 130pop with gauls or with any civs in 10min)

for me you didn't lose that game because gauls>hellen but because rush>booming, nothing do to with gauls eco here I believe.

Also, you played athenians, you can do a batch of 5 slingers from beginning without losing any eco.

i agree though that scouting is important in a19. In high level games on sc2 for example, nobody will win without scouting and this is a good thing, it should be the same in 0AD.

imo that game shows that 0ad is taking a good direction where rushing wins against booming and scouting is necessary.

  11. @fatherbushido

Thank you for the feedback man.

I really need to play more this alpha. My feeling (by playing and listening to you guys) is that everybody is making 200 pop then start making 100 champions from 20 min. So what if you push at 19 min with 300 pop and armory upgrade. Looks like there might be a timing here.

Anyway new alpha is exciting, we should look for counter of this meta before rebalancing everything again.

    Sorry for a long offtopic
