Hi again I felt like modeling something else, so I looked to see if there was anything interesting in the eyecandy thread. Seems like Trajan's column wasn't done yet, so I've started making one. Might have gone a bit high in polycount, but I'll look closer at that when its more or less finished. I probably won't be able to finish this until a 2-3 weekends from now, as exams and other deadlines are getting close, but at least its a start. Added a little bird to the pedestal, and i'm working on the statue on top right now (which is roughly halfway done)

I can model things pretty quickly (say.. over a weekend or so), if I have good reference material. So, if someone really wants some animal added, finding a good reference materials and there is a big chance I'll model it. Good reference materials means a clear photo (or sketch) of the animal in profile and from the front. Any angled shots are pretty much useless as references when it comes to modeling.

New Icon and Logo (+a brief introduction)
Micket replied to Palantius's topic in Eyecandy, custom projects and misc.
Hi Palantius. I think it looks nice. Well done. Uploading *.zip files should work. Also, you never signed the legal waiver, so please read this thread: http://www.wildfiregames.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=16802&st=0 -
Sorry, but I don't understand what you are asking.

I don't see the difference in being in the official team or not. I just don't want to bother with the discussions, that's why I went for animals. Less to discuss there (just the exact species). I only want to do this as relaxation break from work.

I really don't think we need to add more animals to the list. There is still a huge amount of work left animating the ones I've made so far.

I've never seen a single colored floor ever, so that's unlikely to be a good idea. If its the carpet seen in the photos above that would make an awful "green-screen".

Some pointers (for projection painting) * Please show the entire object in one shot. Piecing it together is really hard. Closeups aren't really necessary here. * For alpha channels, one needs a clean background color. Like a green-screen in movies, so that the alpha channel can be made automatically. In these photos one would have to do it manually. This poor old thing looks a bit rough though. I'm not sure if its the best choice for the texture, there are better photos of living birds.

I'm afraid none of those are good enough. It's relatively simple to find shots from underneath, but that's actually less important (we will be seeing the birds from above in 0AD anyway). Maybe the second one, but the noisy background (the bike) makes it less than ideal. The perfect shots are basically like the ones I used as reference. Hard to find. I'm not even sure if I managed to match the same bird species on both sides! If you find some really good photos, which aren't explicitly licensed as something CC-BY-SA compatible, you can always ask them. I recomment searching on http://commons.wikim.../wiki/Main_Page and http://www.flickr.com/search/advanced/ with the all three CC-boxes checked (which means only CC-BY-SA content)

The first skin is the bottom on both sides. Clearly can't be used! Still no response from flickr, so we can't use the second texture (yet). It's really difficult to find good references for birds, with their wings out, from above. Those kind of photos just don't happen. If you find a good clear shot of the top part of a wing, and the same from below, I could make a new bird in a few minutes. Finding photos (with CC-BY-SA) is the hard part. This is the same for modeling as well. If I just find a clean profile picture then I can just finish upt he model in no-time. Finding a shot from the front or above, combined with a profile shot is where I spend 50% of the time (feel free to help out there if you want to see a specific animal done)

No i didn't even fetch any good references and didn't color match it. It was a 3 minute hack-job. I'm sure Enrique will do it properly, gorillas shouldn't be hard.

Modified Oryx model, and voila, an Auroch. I think. Fewer references than usual (as could be expected as they died out a few hundred years ago). This is the Auroch cow:

From the images i saw I never once saw one of them stretch their wings. I think these pheasents rather run than fly.

I think I'm done with the male gorilla now (definitely male and female version!) Edit: Just a crude texture paint to see how it looks. gorilla_male.zip

Hands and feet still need some work, other than that, I'm pretty happy with how it turned out. Gorillas where surprisingly simple to model.

http://trac.wildfiregames.com/ticket/1993 Discussion thread for the (male) gorilla model. Just an hour into modeling yet so its still very early.

I modeled it's body first as it was lying down, so it was quite wide to start with. Modified to work as standing now. It's also unwrapped, and legs should hopefully animate well. Added double-sided faces on the tail parts, which should have alpha maps. I also added single faces around the mouth for the larger teeth (also alpha maps there), so it should look cool when it bites down (i love eye-candy). Let me know if there are something that needs to be modified (or feel free to do it yourself!) croc2.zip
