Civ: Macedonians (Macedones, Seleucids, Ptolemies)
L'ethu replied to Mythos_Ruler's topic in Game Modification
I found some interesting articles that suggest the Ptolemaic Kings prefer to employ kleruchies (land granters) instead of natives and some of the mercenaries mentioned that the Ptolemaic Kings are the best paymaster in the known world. So i think the team should do more research on the Ptolemaic military structure. -
I suggest Jugurtha, enemy of Rome.

The next preview, the Sassanid Dynasty: Figure 1: Payâhdag-î Nîzagân (levy spearmen) formed the bulk of the Sassanid army, they are peasant levies and their number consists more than three quarters of the Sassanid army. They are good for siege warfare when they need most of them building siege mines, guarding baggage train, storming fortification and excavating trenches but they are really weak in morale, training and not to mention their equipment. Figure 2: Kurds, Syrians and Anatolian who offer their service for the Sassanid army, expert of skirmish and valuable missile support for the Sassanid army. Figure 3: Sassanid foot archers are the most valuable asset for the Sassanid army. For the Sassanid army foot archers have proven themselves a decisive instrument to achieve victory which have a deep impact to the Romans, Byzantines and the Arabs . Their task is to soften the enemy before the Savaran attack. Each archer unit is led by an officer called Tirbad. He's duty is to organizes his men into groups so that one can relieve the other while maintaining a rapid fire rate. Although they came from the lower caste but they earned more respect than a mere Payâhdag (peasant levy). Their equipment is better and they are . Standard battle tactics are that they are deployed before the spearmen, firing from behind a wall of shields, retiring through them to avoid close combat. Figure 4: Gilan infantry and Median infantry are the most valuable assets for the Sassanid army who lacks melee unit to encounter the Roman threat. Gilan infantry was mentioned by Ammianus Marcellinus during the siege of Amida while Median infantry was mentioned by some historians to be the main source of the Sassanid regular infantry. Figure 5: Deylamites and Sughdian warrior are outlanders, although they consists of a small portion of the Sassanid army but they could turn tide between victory and defeat. Figure 6: Savaran may dismount from horseback when they were needed for assaulting fortress but it is rare they dismount during field battle. Figure 7: Parthian clans like Karens and Surens are among the Parthians who have defected to the Sassanids in order to save their own skin. In times of war they served the Sassanid army and in peace they enjoyed their wealth and power under the Sassanid protection. Figure 8: The Sassans proven to be the legitimate ruler of Persia by force, under Ardashir I's leadership they have successfully overthrow the Parthians and become the only superpower to challege Rome. This unit are a Savaran belongs to the House of Sassan, his armament consists a lance and a mace, shield was not used because it would prohibit the knight to charge home against the enemy. Figure 9: Sughdian cavalry like their infantry counterpart are well respected for their skills and courage, their reputation are legendary and their foe would think twice before confronting them in the battlefield. Figure 10: Zhâyedân ("Immortals" in Pahlavi ) are the elite among the Savaran, they are the elite reserve for the Sassanid army. Like the Anusiya, their number always maintain at 10000 man strong and the selection process was tough in order to choose the best among the veterans. Their uniform and insignia may probably reflect a strong Achaemenid tradition in order to revive the old Achaemenid Anusiya or Immortals. Leading them was a commander who bears the title of Varthragh-Nighan Khvadhay and mostly a Prince of the Royal family. Figure 11: The Pushtîghbân are the Royal bodyguard unit of the Sassanian Kings. Numbering perhaps 1,000 men they are the elite of the elite. They are spearhead of the Sassanid army, ready to bring to the enemies of Persia but they are not totally invincible. Nomads like the Hephlatites use composite bow and swift horse can easily bring them into submission when they are left without any additional support. -

Figure 11 and 12: Palmyran irregular horse archer and horse archer was a product of Parthian and Sassanid influence, his armament a powerful composite bow, spear and sword makes him an ideal skirmisher but not a good fighter. Figure 13: Palmyran Clibanarii served as the hammer of the Palmyran army, a product from Parthian and Sassanid influence. He is armed to the teeth by chain mail, lamellar plates and horse armor and his armament consists a Kontos lance and mace. Invasio Barbarorum Ruina Romae units

You're right, its a R:TW mod. Despite of being R:TW mod, the mod itself have some minor errors especially unit names. Take a look on this: Dinuadda-claiomhnaghta Its quite odd for Celts or Picts to wield a two-handed axe and the word "claiomhnaghta" means claymore but why they made such mistakes? -

The time frame of this period was 410 AD where Nomads and the so-called "Barbarians" are pushing forward to the Roman and Persian boundaries. The aim of the mod was to recreate the age where the Visigoths have sacked Rome and the Hephthalites have defeat and humiliated the Sassanid Persia with harsh tribute meanwhile the Huns sweep across the East like wildfire, subjugating tribes and Empires. All the unit you see exist in 5th century AD. -

You may visit TWC forum, they have several fantastic preview in the Invasio Barbarorum: Flagellum Dei forum. -
Sounds logical to me and possible by common sense, but will it clash with historical accuracy? I don't know. Perhaps we should leave it to the team or if someone could find some evidence about the Iberian naval combat documents then it could be helpful.

Invasio Barbarorum Ruina Romae units
L'ethu replied to L'ethu's topic in Introductions & Off-Topic Discussion
No, its Pahlavi because they don't use Old Persian as official language to spell the names. But what makes me curious was the so-called "Frasdârân-i-zrêhbârân-i-Pârsašahr" a unit that looks pretty odd in the Persian (Sassanid) Army. The unit looks like dismounted Savaran instead of an ordinary footman. -
Since these are the improvements that help those civilization who have no navy (Huns, Iberians) and historically possible, why not? Implement on random map is possible but historical map is not possible for me and my primary concern was about random map not historical map. Well if there's a demand for mercenary galleys, why don't make all naval random map with neutral (Gaia) coastal colonies?

No, it's a Barbarian Invasion Mod (previously known as Flagellum Dei). This was a small portion of the unit preview that i found in TWC forum. -
Maybe the game should provide neutral coastal colonies which provide mercenary warship for players who lacks navy like Warcraft III: Frozen Throne where player could hire mercenary warship on the map.

My intention was to give the Iberians a chance to defend the coast by granting them an option to convert civilian vessels into partisan navy against four other civilization who have war vessels. I know they have no chance to wage a high seas battle but perhaps by applying such ability the Iberians may have the option cripple or eliminate an enemy in the early period of the game. I was thinking about if the Iberian warriors could hijack a war vessel, how to hijack a ship when a war ship was heavily guarded by marines and sailors? How do you bring the warriors to the intended target and how do you execute your plan against a huge naval fleet? Have you ever consider the percentage of success and the consequences of a failed hijack attempt? This is not Command and Conquer : Generals or Zero Hour where you can assign one hijacker to capture a tank or vehicle (in reality some of these actions was quite impossible). That's why i suggest that an option of converting Iberian civilian vessel in to partisan ship as a response against other five civilization who have a proper navy.

Instead of building a rag-tag war ship from the scratch, why don't just gave the civilian ships (fishing ship, merchant ship) an option to convert themselves into war ships or fire ships in case an Iberian player needs to compete in the high seas.
