Microsoft can't sue us. We are building 0 A.D. from the ground up.
-
The FAQ has a list of requirements that is woefully out of date - sorry about that. Unfortunately, we have no concrete idea yet about system requirements. For shorthand, I'd look at the minimum sys requirements for Age of Empires III and assume ours would be similar.
-
They'll probably remake AOE1. I hope we're done with 0 A.D. before they do. There's been a lot of hype about a lot of RTS games, but none so far have captured the ancient age in the imaginations of gamers quite like AOE1. If they do it, let us hope they take it along the route of 0 A.D, with perhaps some other new features.

Funny thing is, everyone kept screaming for formations and units on walls, but Ensemble ignores everyone and instead opts for Home Cities. While the Home Cities were a good feature, that they ignored their fanbase altogether on the formations and wall garrisoning issue was kind of dumb for a developer to do. Especially since in some of their screenshots they show units on walls! IMHO, it's not that they didn't follow the AOE formula close enough, it's that they held onto it too rigidly! BTW, here's a blast from the past for ya! I remember when I first heard about Age of Empires in PC Gamer Magazine way back in 1996. I could not WAIT for it to come out. The graphics (for the time) were amazing and I was mesmerized by the screenshots. This was way back in the AOL 2.5 days when the internet was still a toddler, so to speak and gaming magazines were the only good sources for information on upcoming games. I remember when we upgraded from a Pentium 120 to an AMD K6-2 400MHz processor. I thought I was bad ace. The same when we upgraded from a 36.6 modem to 56k. lmao. People were ENVIOUS!

I like the gameplay video. However, it looks like the game will suffer from the same mosh-pit style gameplay I dislike in most RPG and RTS games. I also think Titan Quest has much more impressive artwork.
-
Well, for 0 A.D. the pop cost for units will be more logical. Imagine it this way: Each mouth costs 1 pop.
-
Yeah, kinda like the die-hard Starcraft community, without the multi-million dollar sponsors.
-
Blender is free. I also believe it is possible to export to collada format via Blender, which is a format the game uses.
-
Sorry to burst anyone's bubble, but I envision that weather will have no impact on gameplay, other than to add ambiance.

Germans would be the faction - Visigoths, Ostrogoths, and perhaps 1 or 2 more tribes would be the sub-Factions.
-
Speaking to Fionn (and everyone else who didn't know the concept).
-
Maybe you don't know how we are using "sub-factions" in this game. Imagine the game "Age of Mythology." You know how you get a choice of a "minor god" when you advance an age? Well, in 0 A.D., when you play a cartain faction and advance to the last city phase you get a choice between sub-factions. Each sub-faction has different heroes, super units, ans special technologies. So, for instance, the Celts: You have the standard Celtic units available until the City Phase, where you are then allowed to choose between Brtions or Gauls sub-factions (each with different Super Units, Heroes, and Special Techs).

BCE CE?

Take this with a grain of salt, because I am a developer, but (!!!!) if I had my way (!!!) the faction list would look like this... Imperial Romans - "Western" Romans during the 1st and 2nd centuries. These are the Pax Pomana Romans, from Augustus to Marcus Aurelius. Eastern Romans - "Late" and "Early Byzantines"-style Romans of the late empire. Lots of chain mail. Round shields. Long swords. Medieval looking. Dacians - A Thracian-style faction with Germanic and Sarmatian infuences. Had 3 important wars against Roman, finally succumbing to the Romans under Trajan. Huns - Nomadic, buildings are either mobile (like the Norse "resource cart" from AOM) or can pack up and move (like the "trebuchet" from Age of Kings). They also gain a lot from looting. Highly mobile and cavalry-based. Parthians - Part 2's desert faction. Cavalry based. Lots of raiding. Lots of archery. Germanics - They'll have many sub-factions to choose from. Ostrogoths, Visigoths, etc.
-
Right. There were also the Gnostics, who the Orthodox and Catholics tried to wipe out.
-
Google is your (sometimes) friend.
-
Romans who were Orthodox turned out to be Byzantines.
-
Part II is after AD 1. Part I is before 1 BC.
-
That's something currently on the "Backburner" list - things we'd like to implement, but probably won't.
-
Eastern Rome and Western Rome will be two completely different factions. I can't really say much about Part 2, but I can say that much.
-
Part 1: Republican Romans Part 2: Imperial Romans

Personally I think the idea of Home Cities, shipment cards, and all that was brilliant. However, they didn't go far enough in implementation. The "customizations" of the Home City were worthless. They should have meant something to gameplay. Also, the way shipments just popped out of the town center was kind of dumb. I would have preferred it if the player had to capture a trading post in order to get shipments and the shipments would show up at trading posts. Something a little more logical than how ES implemented the idea. The concept of a "Home City" would work wonders in an ancient themed RTS. This is how I would imagine it... - Customizations: Each new customization unlocks new cards, instead of "leveling up" like in AOE3. There can be a "level" indication for your Home City, but it would be more for bragging rights. Unlocking new cards and new customizations gives a kind of "tech tree" with the design of your Home City and makes it more intensive. You can choose a certain technology path through the customization branches you choose. Cool huh? - Show off your Home City: Any player can see your Home City from the multiplayer browser through a kind of player profile. - Greeks: Choose a home city. Each home city gets specific types of cards and customizations. Choose between Athens, Corinth, Thebes, Sparta, Syracuse, etc. Each of these cities has a different deck of cards and different customizations. - Romans: The Home City is obviously Rome herself. All kinds of cool customizations and cards. - Celts: Choose different tribes and each tribe has a different home town and deck of cards. - Iberians: Similar to Celts in implementation. - Carthaginians: Again here, the obvious "Home City" is Carthage. Neat customizations here too, with the double harbor and all that. Lots of trading cards. - Persians: Here, the Home Cities can be either Babylon, Susa, or Persepolis. Each come with different customizations and cards. So, yeah, that'd be how I'd do it. But WFG can't do all that unless you want to wait until 2015 for us to complete it.

"AD" is to come before the date, not afterwards. So, this year is AD 2008.
