  1. ^heh heh

Real nice shot - loving how the Qarthas are coming along. When does your helmet modeler return? I see that the final Persian skirmishers and cavalry still have pilos helmets as placeholders, which still distracts from how awesome the rest of the units look like. :) I think I see a kataphract. :D

  2. Brilliant article. Not much to argue about, although I was unaware that the Spartans ever used kopides in a partiuclarly large number, doubt they wore the exomis after around 370, and some of the statements were made without telling the reader that they are still in dispute (Spartans wearing only bronze cuirasses; heiros lokhos being entirely homosexual, among others).

But it was a fantastic read nonetheless!

  3. Thanks for the information, espiesior. :)

The 0 A.D. Persians, however, are only meant to be represented by the Achaimenids. It's not as such ignoring the successor and later Iranian empires, but more to pinpoint a particular era and highlight it, I suppose. Just as the Hellenes don't have early chariots or late thureophoroi - they appear only as in the Classical era. And the Romans only as the Republic.

Who knows, we may see Parthians or Sassanids in a later version of the game. :D

  4. Excellent work. It's amazing how popular some misconceptions become just after one Hollywood movie is released!

I only have one problem, in that the explanation of the first myth could imply that the Achaimenids never owned any slaves, which isn't true.

Great article anyway, and I hope it encourages more people to read up more on this amazing civilization.

  5. It's a good read, but I think certain parts are certainly mistaken or misinformed, which is unfortunate for an article intended to debunk myths. I think it would have been best to word your figures at Thermopylai with an "at least", as 60,000 is generally treated as the lowest possible estimate for the invading Achaimenid army. Likewise, the Greek contingent would have numbered more, you've only named the Hellenes that were there for the last day (until the Thebans surrendered, of course). I would also say it's a bit much to say the Hellenes only fought for the 'glory of battle', as there was obviously a strategy behind it.

We also can't conclude anything on transverse crests. In fact, all evidence we have of such designs could potentially relate to Sparta in one form or another, and then again perhaps they don't. The same applies to them being officer unique. There just isn't enough to completely 'debunk' this from either argument, and the same applies to homosexuality theories regarding certain poleis and colonies (a huge continuing debate, way too big to fit here!).

But with those issues out of mind, it's a very good article and does it's job fine. :)

  6. Yeah, the textures for the elephant in this shot are fantastic, much more realistic than the steel/cobalt colour in AoE games. As if the skinners have never seen an elephant (or even a photo of one) in their lives.

I'm guessing both Eles belong to the Carthaginians, but I'll be hopefull and think maybe one of them goes to the Persian side instead. ;)

  7. I see the hoplites with the scaled armour, Michael - and I can't wait to see even more of them. ;)

Love how the peltasts have come along, too. The different stages seem more obvious and unique. I would perhaps give some other alternative shades of green/brown for their tunics, though.

I currently have no problem with how the borders look... they seem the right thickness to me.

  8. Why?sad.gif , Its a practical ability. You do not lose time handling the explorers through map, instead you use that time in making things more practical, like developing your economy.

    Not everybody plays no rush.

    :) :)

  9. The full res shot really shows just how nicely the flora is coming along in the game. Looks amazing!

I think this may be the first shot we actually see all three developments of the Toxotes. :) Just noticed the variety of faces, especially facial hair in the units too. Very nice touch.

Is that particular type of ship the earliest naval unit available to the Hellenes?

  10. I think at the higher settings with Bloom and HDR the game looks great but is a pain for gameplay.

Works fine for me. :) Depends on the card you have, of course - but even with the abuse of bloom it's beautiful to play and look at, even one and a half years later.

  11. Rather surprisingly, Ensemble Studios announced a second expansion pack for Age of Empires 3.

    http://gamespot.com/pc/strategy/ageofempir...ties/index.html

And perhaps even more surprisingly, it's beind developed by Big Huge Games!

The expansion will concentrate on Asia this time around, with Japan, China and India as playable civs. While I'm a little concerned about seeing the Sioux potentially fight elephants in a map of Korea, I still think this could be pretty interesting. The first ES y-pack. :)
