OK thanks for those suggestions.
I logged onto the multiplayer server and it was empty (see image), clearly I'm doing something wrong but what?

ok, figured it, got an old release , duh!

At least it was a fairly recent old release (Debian (stable) users get A17 (released Oct 2014) unless they explicitly include the backports repo...)
