FOrmations: an idea

Hi, I like the formations sistem in 0AD but i think it is currently a little useless: when two enemy formations crash, each soldier starts a hand-to hand combact and soldiers don't work together as in a real formation. For exeample, in the reality when two phalanxes fight the first line creates a "shield wall" that enemies can't walk through, while in the game when a falanx is attacked enemies can pass through the formation. So in my opinion it would be nice to implement this more realistic sistem, like this:

what do you think?

good, for exeample the first line of a phalanx could have a heavy defense bouns or much more possibilities to avoid the enemy's attack. But if attacked by sides or by behind, they could have a defense and attack malus.

I'm not going to lie.. that battle system would be AWESOME in this game..

I'm pretty sure that will definitely be a finale in the last parts of beta though :X

Also as far as this battle system goes, for units with shields, why not give them a chance to block for no damage?

Since I noticed that ranged Calvary have a rather large chance to miss ( which can be very annoying, not to mention they throw those little javelins WAY to SLOW ) so instead of missing frequently, just make it to where shielded units have a chance to block the arrows, or swords with shields..

Wow, I also feel the same about formation.

I really want to see the testudo formation in action.

Example:

TESTUDO Formation

  • Reduced speed on movement (Because they have to maintain formation)
  • Damage caused by arrow attacks are reduced (Because they protect their side, front, back, and upside with shields)
  • Damage caused by siege weapons are increased (Since they are in close proximity so they are likely to get hurt easily by siege weapons)

PHALANX WALL Formation
  • Reduced speed on movement
  • Damage caused by horsemen are reduced
  • Increase attack effectiveness on horsemen

CIRCLE Formation

  • Reduced speed on movement
  • Increase attack effectiveness on infantery
  • Used to protect VIP/siege weapons/cart , etc(Used to escort/protect someone / something during the game)
