Start the game, hit multiplayer and you're on your way! You have to be compatible with the mods you might use, but the folks there will tell you all you need to know. I only do SP, but I think the place is overall welcoming. Should things get rough there's a dedicated thread here to complain... In order to find the player base, you need to use the latest release version of the game, which is currently version alpha 26. If you're using Linux then it might be necessary to configure a PPA in order to obtain the latest version of 0ad. Otherwise, download and install the latest version for your OS here.
