  1. I assume you mean this one, as opposed to the large large one?

A friend of mine checked that out from the library once. It looked quite good :) I'm going to have to check it out if I can.

The first one you mentioned is the "Youth Reader's" edition. The other is the full version. They both include the same stuff, but the full version is (obviously) much longer, and thus probably has more content in it.

Open up a shell/terminal window. Un-tar.gz the Gimp 2.0 file. CD into it. Read the INSTALL file :)

  3. Install stuff as root.

I dunno why it had the French OpenOffice. When I downloaded Mandrake a long time ago, it had it in english...

The other two CD's are for it you wanted to install ALL the packages in ALL languages.

Sure, KDE looks nice, but it is very slow. I recommend GNOME (a GNU product! Woohoo), WindowMaker, or just plain X.

  4. Exceptions made for those who /have/ to use IE (or something else - Lynx, say) for acccessibility or language - but there can't be many such here.

    Links pwnz Lynx! :)

In Links, I think that if you go to a message board with TeX in it, it will actually show the TeX code since it can't show images.
