  1. Unfortunately, IIRC, most laptop LCDs use a proprietary connector that can be hard or impossible to work with. I've seen a couple of threads of this nature on various forums, and the general consensus is, "It's technically possible, but unlikely."

*However*, I think I remember seeing some information on converters that convert the proprietary connectors of certain brands/models into standard VGA connectors. Don't remember where - sorry. I'd wager that a good Googling may turn something up :D

EDIT: Here's a good Usenet thread regarding this topic. :D

  2. I will start using it, it is annoying opening Windows Media Player to rip music...

Yuck - I tried to rip something with WMP once, and only once. :D It didn't even work correctly (though that may have been the fault of my computer at the time), but I was unimpressed with WMP's ripping features; especially coming from using CDex.

I love the flexibility CDex gives you, especially in the area of encoding the ripped audio. WMP locks you into MS's WMA format, or plain ol' MP3, but you can use a very large variety of encoders with CDex. Plus, even if CDex doesn't natively support a particular encoding library, you can set it to spawn a command-line encoder and pass the arguments to it. (That's how I rigged CDex up to rip straight to FLAC format for some testing)

  3. I'm (still) not familiar with the nVidia product lines, but a Radeon 9800 Pro is only running about $120, last I checked. I realize that's still a lot of cash, but it's a good deal on a good card :D

  4. When I was younger, it was mostly hand-me-downs. You'd be surprised how many people gave me perfectly good (but old) clothes :D

Now, my Mom buys my clothes from Target, WalMart, etc. Personally, I don't see any reason to spend exorbitant amounts of money for clothing. The shirts I wear cost between $3 and $10 at Target/WalMart.

If you had the money, where would you want to shop?

Target and WalMart. :D Seriously, except for *really* nice clothes (such as dress suits), I don't see any reason to spend more than what those stores charge. I disdain buying things just as 'status symbols' :D

  5. Amazon.com's music previews work in Firefox, as it just tosses a MP3 audio file at the browser. Interestingly enough, WalMart's music system only works in IE for me, as does MSN Music (ugh).

    I suppose I don't fit into either of your categories, though, since I'm a Windows Firefox-er :D

  6. Mozilla doesn't use Microsoft's (BROKEN) MSHTML.dll engine.

    :D

Anybody notice this in the debug output?

    CPULevel:6

    CPURev:772

    CPUMHz:267

Any chance the game isn't working because of a lack of CPU power? pamsman2, does the computer actually have a 266MHz CPU, or is that perhaps reported incorrectly?

  7. That's the first thing I thought when I saw the Chocolate Factory trailer on TV... "Uh, Johnny Deep looks like Michael Jackson..." :D I probably won't be seeing the movie - looks too silly and not even as good as the original "Chocolate Factory", which was silly but still decently-made.

I like him much better as Jack Sparrow :D

  8. I installed SP2 when it first came out, and haven't had any problems. The only point I've had a startup time greater than 2-3 minutes was when my hard drive was having some problems. Check the Windows Event Viewer for any disk-related error messages.

As for the taskbar problem, is it possible that you could drag that second bar back onto the real taskbar? I know that you can create new "taskbar bands" or toolbars that are detachable from the taskbar itself - perhaps that's what's going on (wild guess)?

  9. Good thinking, Frank - I didn't consider a hard drive problem. Don, can you look in the Windows Event Log (Control Panel -> Administrative Tools -> Event Viewer -> System) for error messages regarding your hard disk drive(s)?

  10. Hmm, that's interesting. One thing that came to mind is Intel's thermal protection technology: if the CPU gets too hot, it will automatically scale back in clock speed (even down to something like 400MHz, I think), just to stay cool. If you have a badly installed heatsink, jammed fan, dried out thermal paste, or some other issue that could make the CPU become hotter than "recommended", that *could* be what is causing it.

Most CMOS setup programs (press Delete or F2 as the computer is booting) allow you to monitor the CPU temperature. There are also some Windows apps that can do it, provided your motherboard has thermal sensors (which it should). I'd recommend checking out the temperature of your CPU, especially after you see slowdowns. A relatively simple heatsink reseating or re-pasting may fix the issue (emphasis on *may* :D).

    ... That's what I'd try next :D
