Hi there. I just found about the project 0AD today and it seems a lot intresting that is open source and many people work together to produce this nice result.

Straight in the subject. I have no experience of computer programing and I have just started learning blender to produce some very basic 3d models. I would like to

learn about game development and the overall process of creating a game (how it is set up, how it works, how the code is built and implemented etc.). Though I sadly

cannot afford a school to study about the topic. I am an individual who just wants to learn about the process of game making. So I just thought to ask you for some inforamtion

so maybe at some later point I could even contribute to your game.

The information I want to ask you about are : how a game is made ? how it works ? how could I learn from studying your project ? are there any books/videos/tutorials that could explain

the overall process of game making (like this one) ? where could I start learning about game making ? Also, could anyone of you afford a little time of explaining the above things to me ?

I would like to make a very simple game of my own for start. An Real Time Strategy. I don't care about the quality, I just want to learn the process and to be able to build a working game

that could run in windows. I have searched a bit in the files of other games (Civilization 4) but I couldn't understand anything. I have also downloaded visual studio and I would like to study the code of your game.

So in conclusion : where can I start learning about game making ? (but in detail. I need guidance and explanation of all the process.) What tools do I need ? (How could I create my own very basic RTS game ?).

Thanks in advance for any information that you could share with me. (I love the project you are currently working).

unity and unreal are mainstream tools for gamedev nowadays. there are free guides on the net

you can also just select a language, some popular opengl framework and just code a game. id recommend it for learning, but in the long run you might want to learn unreal or unity because they handle a lot of stuff for you.

  2. i had very complex army made of like 7 unit types (7 types actively used in battle) and wanted to see if it was worth it, basically i wanted to see if my enemy focused my tank or if they didnt, if that tank was good value for money (and for population slot) or if it wasnt, etc

ihave to look closely but afaik i have to relaunch replay then skip first 30mins ffs (even on 20x speed its slow) to the battle.

Is there way to go back 1min or 5min? (to see something i could miss)

Additionally, the same occurred with an 'Arthus' today, replay file attached.

    metadata.json

    commands.txt

ye people are so scared of losing 11 points that they will act like that lol it kills the mood and annoys really, especially when they try to run with their last woman or cav for 10min trying to make you chase it lol or just leaving/afking

it would be good if leaver lost automatically (same about afkers)

  4. Is this the right place to report leavers?

Now, this happens quite often, people refuse to resign, pretend net problems or being afk (while still moving units on map running from you in various directions and not replying to you on chat),

of course thats after destroying their base.. before they reply

no idea how can I win such game, i checked whole map for his units but nothing was found, i also waited 10min or more

    his nick:

    Tony921

I have replay but not sure how where is the file or something to attach it

    (okay i found replay, attached)

    commands.txt

    metadata.json

In my hypothetical world elephants aren't so good against buildings anymore. Also in my world, melee cavalry have a bonus attack vs. your dangerous catapults (and every civ has access to some kind of melee cav, so it's all good).

cavalry has a bonus? most cav is either ranged or, if melee, they have a spear not a sword

  6. I use these codes:

    http://0ad.wikia.com/wiki/Cheats

But I dont see a way to assign one of my units to enemy.

Basically i want to give strong unit to enemy and then test the outcome of 1v1 fight with all units of my civilization.

but it will make no sense if i attack random enemy units, it needs to be 1v1 and with strong unit.

Is there a way to assign already existing unit to enemy in single player?

Well, in truth it's not so difficult to counter a mass archer:

    •  You can for example send 3-4 catapults to kill them all without lose any unit (and you can keep your army behind the catapults to kill sword incoming)
    • You can make a lot of pikes (40-50) to create a good shield for your ranged units behind (but send them in formation). Elephants are also a good tank unit
    • If you have just slingers or skirmishers (better skirmishers), just go with them as nearer as possible to the archers (it would be perfect to enter their formation), so the archers will die very fast against your skirmishers, even if you will some some when you are trying to reach them
    • It can be also good to send with your army also 3-4 rams (that can kill 1 archer with a simple shot)
    • Send your hero first then use him to dance while you wait your soldiers coming (this is op against a mass archer)

dancing? :D you mean clicking around the field making the hero turn left and right constantly so the arrows miss?

  8. I noticed selecting all your soldier units and sending them to where enemy is, is more than risky and most of the times will fail unless:

    - hes not camping with grouped units

    - you have really really big advantage in units amount/power

If he has them grouped, usually theres at least 50 ranged units but sometimes also theres 125 ranged units grouped in one place (and that happens on 200 pop max so imagine what would be in 300 pop max game) + some melee units.

What happens when u just send your army there is that they will go 1 by 1 unless u set formation and thats how i won few times against better players and thats also how most of the times i lose vs someone :D

Basically, player1 archers need to be grouped, and they will kill at least 20% of incoming units of player2 before player2 starts attacking. if player2 units go one by one player1 units might as well kill all of player2 units because player2 units were firing when player1 was still coming.

I noticed this is a trend. You set box formation on archers, then provoke enemy to come there, either with few units going in and out of front field, or with long bow archers, or with building something valuable like militar colony or barracks or fortress (or tower). that more than likely will provoke him to send all his units into your archers....

And he will die.  Only thing that can save him is formation (but even then its not perfect, because you are standing, and hes moving, so you are shooting, and he is not).

if there are trees or obstacles his formation setting may even slow him down (soemtimes formations have troubles getting through obstacles and they keep reformating themselves wasting time walking around in one place trying to find a way to pass the obstacles while in formation, while enemy is shooting at you lol)

So I wanted to hear what are your opinions towards this kind of playing (camping with grouped archers/ranged units) and also how to effectively go in vs such dangerous archers group (or how to effectively camp). Not everyone has siege towers to defend himself from the early dmg :P.

basically skirmishers, javelins, archers and slingers can do that, when you just send your units without formation they will die before they reach enemy. formation is good against that but i feel its not enough and the one who stays in one place always wins lol

  9. I played 90 percent of games as seleucids because i felt in love with one unit but i dont love it anymore, im considering switching to other civ.

I usually make military colony instead of CC so yeah that bonus never helped me at all. Maybe it helps when ur team loses base and tries to rebuild cc or when they dont have colony building in the menu so they build cc to expand

In this rare case the reduction is small and even if it was big it probably still wouldnt be game changer.

  10. Just trying to learn catapults ;) they are fine, but that packing/unpacking stuff takes a while and if you have 5 or more catapults to manage and 3 of them decide to unpack or pack for some reason then thats hella annoying and can lead to death of either catapults or your army if you decide to protect them when they decide to stop...

basically, the thing is, i move catapults, they see one irrelevant unit of enemy, and they unpack! to try to kill him. before they unpack and pack again they are already surrounded by enemy.

is there any way to make it only attack to what you click? it feels like it has some weird automation in it. i played just 2 games with catapults so cant tell what are the exact circumstances when catapults pack or unpack (when not desired) but this thing is real and happens quite often.

How do you prevent that? or you just def it with units and dont care.

packing/unpacking its not that bad, but i have a feeling that catapults pack or unpack when you dont want.
