  1. Ahh a classic puzzler!

    The way I see it:

    Gothmog can be:

Uruk (special breed of black orc which Sauron alone mutated)

Olog (battle trolls from the Morannon also)

Black Numenorean from Umbar - very likely, TLA may do him this way

Nazgûl - perhaps a lieutenant of Minas Morgul since The Lord of the Nazgûl was the King of Morgul?

Now - Why would Ologs and Nazgûl take orders from an Uruk or another Olog for that matter? To me it's much more plausible that the Gothmog who took power after the fall of the Lord of the Nazgûl was a being of higher and more fearsome status, such as a black numenorean or a nazgûl. In fact the black numenorean theory has literary support- in the second age, two of Sauron's most influential cohorts are two black numenoreans, Herumor and Fuinor, who both became Sauron's puppets in the South.

  2. I don't recall the elves having uniforms in the book, so wouldn't they use a variety of armor?

Well yes, but they'd have preferred 'styles' or materials to work with, and many of the armor would be made by the same smiths so many would have similar armor.

I was really disappointed that there were no Battles of the Fords of Isen too!

I also really despised the treatment they gave the Haradrim, visuals-wise. The book CLEARLY (TTT, that is) describes Haradrim as wearing scarlet cloaks, brazen mail of segmented plates, and having gold jewelry. This is reminiscient of Nubian warriors of our own history. However, in the movie, they decided that they would ignore Tolkien's description and portray the Haradrim more as Arabians or something, wearing drab colors and covering their faces with turban-like wraps.

  3. You bet they will ;)

There's a reason this game is called "The Last Alliance" lol ;p

Actually the name has just stuck - there's no real connection with the event anymore ;)

But if you consider TLA a last alliance of purists in a commercialized Tolkien world, then we've got a good name

  4. Well that 'miracle' is nothing short of 15 billion years of reorganization of matter ;)

The reason why it's so perfect is in the method in which DNA replicates itself - two strands separate and since each hydrogenous base has only one other that can pair with it to form a complementary pair, a perfectly duplicated strand is created. It's in the rare cases of mutations, frame shifts, etc (considering the sheer amount of base pairs) that odd things happen... And what may seem odd to us, like 6 fingers is not much different than a mutation in the brain that makes one hypersensitive to the smell of gasoline, for all chemical purposes.

I guess what's most amazing to me is that when you break matter down enough and rebuild basic symmetry everything in the world becomes the same exact thing! For instance we know four forces today - Weak, Strong, EM, and Gravity. These are all essentially the same (well only EM, weak, and strong have been experimentally unified as of today) even though now we can regard them as totally different things, when one breaks them down enough and goes back into time, before major symmetry was broken, these things are all the same :)

Kind of hard to explain to those not up on theoretical physics though :P If you're interested enough I can recommend some books.

  6. Even as they spoke there came a blare of trumpets.  Then there was a crash and a flash of flame and smoke.  The waters of the deeping stream poured out hissing and foaming: they were choked no longer, a gaping hole was blasted in the wall

Sounds very similar to gunpowder. I was actually very pleased with how this was done in the movie - I didn't quite like the olympic torch idea to light it, but it was entertaining to say the least

So it will probably be an object that an Isengarder "builds", like the Dwarven siegeman builds a siege engine, and then it can be set, the unit goes next to it, sets it (which takes time), then walks away and it explodes after a certain amount of time.

  7. Faramir was bad, but I think nothing compares to the utter heresy involved with the Galahdrim IN FULL PLATE of all armors at Helm's deep. Actually the entire helm's deep thing was portrayed much differently - Where was Erkenbrand? In the movie they thought he was apparently inadequate and they decided to replace him with Eomer!

  8. Ok well I suppose a poll for inds is OK  I don't want any misconceptions to be going around, but I guess if we do our job right and make them close to how they're portrayed in the books, there should be no problems, right? ;)

    So go ahead.

  9. Ok, how many of you are familiar with Nikola Tesla?

I'm kind of a Teslaphile, and so far his ideas on the future are headed down the right direction:

For those of you not familiar with Tesla, here's a little Background:

Tesla was born in Croatia in the last half of the 19th century. He emigrated to America as an Electrical Engineer with a college education all over Europe: Paris, Croatia, Germany, London.

When he came to America, he quickly earned a reputation as a true discoverer and visionary. Tesla invented the first mechanism to harness alternating current effectively, so he became the foremost opponent of Thomas Edison, who was the champion of Direct Current. They would quarrel throughout their lives. Anyways, Tesla was one of the few people in the history of the world whoose visionary prowess still continues to manifest itself today. Tesla invented Fluorescent Lights, Alternating Current (more or less), the niagra falls hydroelectric plant systems, the Tesla Coil, the Wireless Cold Lamp, Wireless Power Transmission (beyond wireless Electromagnetic Radiation transmission), robotics, remote-control, self-guided weapons, beam weapons, and many other things.

In 1900 he envisioned a world connected by wireless power transmission: Telsa tried to harness the longitudinal waves of light (as opposed to hertzian/radio EM waves, which are transverse, longitudinal waves are more akin to sound waves.) from the vacuum of space-time itself, and apparently these so called "scalar" EM waves were independent of the dimensions of space, and only dependent on time, so that there was an eternal source of this power. Anyways, Tesla succeeded in creating lamps that functioned without wires or any apparent power source by creating fields of charge, which he hoped to create en masse in the "ionosphere" of our world. Tesla was an elitist, but he sincerely hoped the harnessing of this wireless power source would guarantee power and therefore success to all nations in the world. He envisioned at the turn of the 20th century the Internet, cell phones, pagers, etc. Tesla invented robots before the word was even known. (A robotical boat he hoped to sell to governments)

Tesla also designed "Scalar EM" Weaponry, which is basically like a 'death ray' of sorts, which he claimed to have actually produced and tested in his lab. A conspiracy theory today is that he sold his ideas to the Russian Government and when he died the CIA/FBI gained control of his research and these weapons are being used today. (the science indicates these things can change weather patterns, disentigrate planes in a sphere around their source, target and destroy things with a beam, etc. perhaps this is why Iraq is having so much trouble with power?) Also, another conspiracy is that the terrorist group Aum Shinrikyo, Aum Supreme Truth, (the group responsible for the Sarin gas attack on Tokyo) has expressed interest in Tesla's research and has reportedly tested these things in Australia (do a search for Aum Shinrikyo 1993 australia). So the theory is that these things have been used on a less deadly scale in the US and Italy, where there were major power outages. (I live right near the area where the newsmedia claims the problem spot was!)

Another conspiracy relates to the giant explosion in Tunguska, Siberia that leveled thousands of acres of taiga forest in 1908. Supposedly the location of Tunguska, Tesla's Lab in NYC and the then-current position of Admiral Robert Peary (at the north pole) are in a direct line. Tesla expressed interest in Peary's trek and was supposedly trying to contact him in someway)

Anyways, about the future - Tesla's been right on about the future so far, so I think it's safe to say his wireless power ideas could be right around the corner. With this there would be an unprecedented surge in conservationism and big industry would probably do whatever it could to put a stop to this because, for instance, nuclear, oil, coal, hydroelectric, and wind power would all be rendered obsolete. So there would be some economic problems with this, but picture a world where power is like light - always there in some way to harness with various appliances. Cars could run on it with absolutely no emissions, everyone's home would be lit, regardless if you live in Canada or in Cambodia.

  10. Isnt it just some faritales

    Er no, It's a world-myth and a basis for his life's work.

The Lord of the Rings and the Hobbit, by comparison could be regarded as fairytales.

    ONLY A YEAR??

No, I said more than a year. So realistically speaking probably 2 or more years. We're not concerned about testing right now as there is nothing to test, so don't worry about it.

  11. TLA's will be done with differing levels of opacity. So there will be LoS gradually fading into complete opacity.

Also on the drawing board is "Memory of Sight", a new innovation TLA is considering that would bascially determine how long an area remains "partly opaque" before the full opacity covers it back up again. So for instance, exploring with a scout is more valuable than exploring with another unit because the area will remain partly visible longer.

  12. Kind of an openmindness to the idea that you can't prove the existence of no god or a god(s), so both should be a possibility.

I kind of lean towards Agnosticism because I do believe in some original/ultimate truth and that all religious beliefs are all different ways to express the same truth, kind of like how painters can paint the same idea in infinitely many ways.

  13. I don't really think the issue is whether either issues are wrong or whatever, it's some time before these can be proven.

I guess the difference is that there is a method that is proven to work when it comes to science that will be tried to prove evolution, but with creationism, there's never going to be an effort to try and prove it with a method that works every time. (logical proof)

So I can see why some evolutionists have no toleration for creationism. I myself am secular, but I have nothing really 'against' religion as long as it doesn't become imperialistic. I think everyone should believe in something 'higher', because in the end everyone's believing in the same ultimate truth and that's just natural IMO.

But the real issue here is liberty here in America.

Of course, free press, free speech, and free religion seem not to be honored here -

But does the bill of rights apply to minors?

If an adult placed the pamphlet on the teacher's desk, there's little they could do IMO, without being sued by the adult eventually :)

  14. It's because too many of them are pushing for graphics over gameplay and there, like in many other areas, is a large tendency for rampant, mass commercialization, and it's bringing down the industry standard.

As you probably can guess from my stance on the movies, I'm a huge opponent of mass commericialization of things, because it creates static, shallow thoughts and depresses original thought, creativity, and critical thinking. For instance, 10 years after the movies, kids who were 14 years old and first heard about Tolkien when the movies came out will enter the workforce as Tolkien artists and their first thoughts of Middle Earth will be influenced by the movies as opposed to the books. Reading and generating "original" images in one's mind is much more creative and worthwhile than a product of mass commericialization to me. This is just going to bring down the standard for Tolkien literature, as recent games have in their area.

  15. Other:

Emyn Uial (Hills of evendim), and nearby ruins of Annúminas and Lake Nenuial.

I hear the camping is great there, and the view of the stars is remarkable

If this poll were expanded to include all of Arda, I'd have to say Elenna, specifically the Andustar with its hills, towers, and tall mallorn forests looking towards Valinor.

Otherwise on Erresëa, actually, that would be my preferred vacation spot.
