  1. Actually giving it for free to those who already own the old AoK wouldn't be a great option. It might not look like a big remaster, but with nothing else but the old sprites to work with it's not that easy to improve on them without spending some good time on it. Also, the old games could still be found in certain stores for $5,- those $5 would go to the store, not the studio that actually worked on this re-release. Not to mention, the work that would need to be done to see if anyone has a real old AoK with the cd-keys all over the web. It would cost them more then they could make on the Steam sales. And games simply are being sold above their price at release, that's just how today's market works. Probably this summer it will go for $10 at the steam summer sale. If it's to expensive for you, just wait it out.
  2. I do completely understand the reason for this game to be re-released. It has been the most succesful AoE game and is still played by many. The old game does indeed conflict with current day hard and software, both in graphics and audio. Many simply don't want to go through the trouble of modding it just to make it work, and have been asking for a remake of AoK for quite a while now. However, since Ensemble Studios is no longer here, it would have been given to a new developer. And the outcome could have gone either way. This HD release however does almost the same, for less and without risk of a failure. Good call Microsoft.
  3. I kinda agree with Oshron. There shouldn't be any negative effects upon loosing or not having a relic in a normal game. Those relics are most likely stored inside one of your buildigs and be well protected by military. Loosing one would mean the player is already in a vulnerable state, extra penalization should not be necessary.
  4. Hmm, some interesting objects that I'm aware of: Babr-e Bayan - A mythical coat said to have been worn by the Persian Hero Rostam. (It is very simular to Heracles' Hide of the Nemean Lion.) The Golden Fleece - A classic, Greek of origin. Later interpertations suggest it's link towards gold mining using fleece wool to filter out the gold. (Could provide a boost towards metal mining?) The (Delpi) Omphalos - A stone object said to allow direct communication with the gods. (Interesting enough to look into.) Cornucopia - Also known as the Horn of Plenty. The image of a large horn filled with food or coins, said to resemble abundance. (Altough common in greek art and mythology, it has been found on an image of the Gaulish god Cernunnos as well.) My favourite: The Gundestrup Cauldron - It is a decorated silver cauldron with images of the Gaulish god Cernunnos as well as other figures. It is believed to have been made for the Celts by Thracians. (Could give a boost in trading?)
  5. On the topic of a possible wonder or other unique buildigs for the Celtic tribes: The Gauls aren't known to have build any large structures like the Britons did. Their largest known buildings are sanctuaries such as 'Gournay sur Aronde' and 'Ribemont-sur-Ancre' but I feel this is already well covered in-game by the current temple structure. However there were these large megalithic structures such als Dolmen(graves) and Menhir(?). However, like Stonehenge they are believed to be build long before the time of the Gauls and Britons. However, they might still be useful to the game, but in need of some tweaking. Since the original history on these objects is lost that shouldn't be too big of a deal. My idea would be to have for multiple smaller ones like the Dolmen and/or Menhir. Although they didn't build them does not mean they didn't hold any value for them, since their druids are known as keepers of the old knowledge. (They could have used these for their rituals.) The option could be added to have a druid 'find' or 'discover' such a structure instead of having your villagers build one. These could then give small area boosts such as replenish forests or lure wildlife. (Deforestation was a problem for Celts, especially for the Britons. Giving the Gauls a small forest boost over the Britons wouldn't be unreasonable.)
  6. Ah, I had not noticed that yet. However, great to know there is indeed such a mechanic at work.
  7. Has there been given any thought towards getting resources from the remains of ravaged buildings? I'd like to see villagers clean the rubble to gain a small protion of the buildings resources and allow new buildings to be build on the site.
