It might be a useful feature, because it can reduce the vertexes, thus improving performance, althought the distance of camera (nearest x farthest) isn't that big enough to use LODs.I don't know if this was suggested before, but if the games doesn't have a LOD system, my idea was to create an option to choose between models quality (Low, high [Like in AoEIII]), of course, that would require (two diferent files?) to one model...
