  1. I'll second your views, Elf! I'm not too proud to say I liked the films.

If we compare PJ's LotR to other FILMS - there's no question: He's done masterpieces. If it may be judged as a film, I certainly believe PJ's adaptation is worthy of at least ONE "Best Picture" Oscar.

If it be compared to Tolkien's source material... well I don't think there's really any educated debate about this. ;) It took PJ 1/10th of the time and thousands of helpers to tell ONLY ONE story from the myriad of what took Tolkien 60 years of his life to do ALL by himself.

  2. My take was that some "veteran" RPGer (the author) was tired of Tolkien-newbies and DnD geeks who were too submersed in their RPG games - who didn't respect "the founder" of the genre, so he wrote a satire. OK, maybe it's not the "best" satire, but... My other guess is that it started out as a "what-if?" conversation (or several) he had had with friends, blah blah blah.

That reminds me... has anyone heard this brain-teaser?: Punctuate those words using correct grammar:

Chris where Ted had had had had had had had had had had had the teachers approval

(Click here for the answer: http://webster.commnet.edu/grammar/faq.htm# (Scroll down to the end.) My english teacher way back in Grade9 had us complete this.)

  3. "I mean we could make him a black númenorean-turned-wraith"

Sounds logical to me! I mean, a mortal living THAT long would - by definition - be nothing but a wraith. Even if he WAS originally a Black Numenorean sorcerer... adding a Ring of Power to the mix would ... turn him INTO a nazgul, no?

how can any mortal live almost 3000 years ? Could Sauron's skill have prolonged his life?

    ...

Gollum lived 400+ years more than the "average" hobbit lifespan - due to the ring. Sure, he was wretched, but he was also "only" a hobbit - and a weak-minded hobbit at that (probably). In the hands of a powerful leader like Aragorn or Boromir - or a Black Numenorean sorcerer - I can believe Sauron's power via a Ring is enough to keep someone "alive" for that long.

**Hmm, next time I watch RotK I'll have to to if someone is billed as "Gothmog" in the credits.

  4. Again, great job, Adam! And yes, I like the similarity to Goldenhead's emblem in Tuor's.

I'm really glad you're pumping those out. I'd like to know more about HOW you come up with the geometry and shading using Photoshop/etc (this was the main reason I thought you were the man for the job on the Dru'edain one - I didn't know how). Email me, perhaps.

  5. LMAO!!

(Some may be miffed... Me? I laughed! A couple of my favourite lines were, "...this kind of silliness is compelled by Tolkien's plot, which has been plagiarised, almost incident by incident, from that masterpiece of modern fantasy, The Blade of Bannara by Jerry Crookes," and (Adam, you'll like this one) "how anyone could hope to win a battle or skirmish without magic is not explained," and "- as if anyone wanted serious 'social commentary' in a fantasy novel!" :P )

Hmm... On a more reflectful note: May it be that we don't make TLA a game the article's "author" wants to play!

  6. Hey guys. I have both, but only Raven Shield is installed currently. I'd CERTAINLY play with you sometime.

P.S. I'm a SOLID fan/user of voice interface software programs like BattleComm, Roger Wilco, MS Gamevoice, TeamSpeak, Ventrilo, etc. If we're gonna play, we should SERIOUSLY consider all using the same program.

Summary of games I have (and would play with other WFGamers):

    Raven Shield

    America's Army: Operations

    Tron 2.0

    Jedi Outcast

    Half-Life (GotY Edition)

Ghost Recon (and Desert Storm and Island Thunder)

    Aliens vs. Predator2

    IL2 Sturmovik

    Mechwarrior3

    BattleZone2

    Starcraft

    Tribes2

  7. Interestingly enough, for those of you who haven't read H.G. Well's, The Time Machine, he "predicts" a future where the two sexes become MUCH less distinct, due to a seperation between the "working" class and the "ruling" class. More docile living conditions for the rich meant there wasn't so great a difference in the roles between male and female, and thus over time, "evolution" ran its course so the "two" really became closer to "one" sex.

Anyhoo, it was a thought-provoking classic, at least. :)

    Seriously now...

Women complement men. Men complement women (no, not "compliment" ... complEment as in "to complete", to counter-balance.) We need each other. I think it's vital to have women in all aspects of society, including the military, because their brains are wired differently than men's brains. We need both perspectives.

However, as a man, I personally wouldn't want to be in an infantry unit with women as combatants (I said "Infantry"). The psychological impact of possibly seeing a woman in pain/dying would be much different for me than to see a man in the same situation. I believe it would negatively affect my ability to function as a soldier. I was raised to protect, honour and, cherish women - to treat them more sensitively than men - because we ARE different.

**BTW, Amazons were thought to cut off their right breast to aid in archery (so that it wouldn't get "caught" in the bowstring). Ugh!! :)

I guess I'm MUCH more desensitized to seeing (depictions of) MEN being killed/wounded in MOVIES... but think about it:

When was the last time you saw a woman die in an action film, and what effect did it have on you? Moreover, a woman soldier for the "bad guys"? At least in the N. American culture, nameless movie-villains who get killed are men. Why? Because our culture isn't ready to see women die as "frivolously" as men, IMO. (I hope we don't ever go there, and I wish I'd never even got to the "current" state of being so desensitized to men being killed.)

    Yes, I know it's a double-standard.

Re: problems created with women in the military: Ok, I'm gonna admit I was watching Oprah while on a lunchbreak at work yesterday. The U.S. Airforce SERIOUSLY has some problems with integration! It's infuriating to think that some violated women won't ever see their abusers brought to justice.

Perhaps the Israeli's could teach a thing or two about integration (or any other "co-ed" military)?

"...one could argue that money is the root of all evil..."

*shakes head* That is one of THE most often misquoted passages of all time, IMO. I'm not even gonna look it up, but I'm sure the passage goes more like,

"The LOVE of money is the root of all KINDS OF evil."

There's a HUGE difference! Money is devoid of evil or good in itself. Humanity's "Freedom of Choice", on the other hand...

  8. I certainly liked the appearance of ALL the elven swords in the films. It's clear their designers "rooted" their style in natural plant forms. Also, I'm not aware of any "stylistic" details Tolkien ever wrote about the weapons themselves.

  9. The fate of the race of Petty-Dwarves was never truly finalized. The death of (or survival of!) Mim's son, Ibun, is really left to imagination.

All we know is that some Orcs capture both of them, but we read of only Mim betraying Turin and guiding the Orcs back to Amon-Rudh.
