  1. My turn now!

Perhaps the most important issue here is social rejection. The best way to make someone feel secure, is to let him have some place to live. And "place to live" is not only in a geographical sence, but also in an economical, sociological, psychological sense. When you have no place, you tend to want to take it...

This is what I think the main problem and why those riots were so great. For decades were the HLM-ers given no place, other than blocks outside cities, and now, some are even loosing their geographical place now, as far as I have been told. I understand their cry, and perhaps, the problem will never be solved : France is blind about "racial", "cultural" dissessions. It officially denies that people may have different views and different ways (and questionning on cultural origin is tabu, and has been, or is still, illegal in France).

I see no solution to this problem, other than finally recognizing that some groups have been left apart, given no place.

  2. Oh, the famous manji (its name in Japanese).

I always have problems with it. In my RPG that I am building, I had to make clear that the manji was used as in Japan : it's the symbol for temples. I tend now to get rid of the Occidental tabu of the Swastika, and it's a hard task, believe me.

  3. But science is the investigation and study of the natural world. What other beliefs could push science out of the way?

I don't know, I am not the one who will discover it, if it ever happens. But lots of mythologies are an attempt to explain nature as well in their own way. And what would be better than science : what could make more precise predictions about Nature, one that would leave lesser and smaller holes. If we ever find that new method of studying the Universe, I'll be among the first one to switch. And science is only one methodology among others.

  4. The first column is for the classical latin alveolars, so it is "t d s z n r". latin does not have dentals, so it would be useless to keep such representation.

Now, latin C is represented by the third column, as C used to be a voiceless velar stop. the third colomn would then have k g x () () h. It would be normal to read that "C" as a voiceless alveolar fricative (or affricate, or alveo-palatal affricate) for any medieval latinist.

  5. I've planned to learn, at some point, to speak Quenya.

It seems difficult, but I'm rather used now to all those grammatical tricks, being myself a conlanger.

(You can see an example of my own language in my signature. People tell me they like it, yet, when I explain it, they stay puzzled :

    Dajimmíj nakjawtáwsuv kiwqankewenkír tufqávit. (Thinhedadndasaw)

A nightsky shines upon us, its darkness tearing us apart. (Sea of Miracles)

The original sentence is in Japanese :

Yami no yozora ga, hutari wakatu no ha (Kiseki no umi)

  6. I was taking science as a whole.

Would there be a newer non-scientific way to have a better description and a more useful prediction of the Universe, science itself would be outdated and grotesquely dark-age.

As for the way I feel Fate is decided, it is the fundamental situation of the Universe that would reveal it. Where, at the initial singularity, everything was placed. This is what made the Universe become as it is, I think. Have there been one more or one less atom, the whole Universe, I think, would be different.

And when something does not work, we will never know about it, as it didn't work.

  7. If I ever was made to eat human flesh, well, I'll ask from where it comes from. If he tells me North America, I will not eat it. Perhaps would it be easier if it was from Japan or Europe. The best would be from the Amazonas, actually. But, I'd eat it only if I was offered it as an ceremony of anthropophagy, or if noone told me it was human flesh.

As for the copy, it's a copy, I wouldn't bother at all.

Oh, I know I want to eat dog meat one day.

  8. We indeed had ALOT of luck, but luck is something I do believe in. There are countless other planets where they didn't have such luck, but then, they aren't here to realise it. These are things I thought about alot before, yet I didn't want to think about it, because it made me frightened. After death, there's nothing. If you don't live, there would have been nothing. I never believed in heaven, I don't believe in God anymore. But I do believe that such an amount of luck is enormous, anything that could have happened could have prevented me from living. I believe in luck, and therefore I am a Deïst.
I do not believe in luck. Well, I think the Universe was to become as it is, and all its existence is well defined from the start. In fact, I would say that "Everything is already written on the Walls of Vaire" : it is all decided from the start. (As if, there was, actually, no time at all, only distance). It's hard to explain, how I think. This doesn't mean I cannot choose anything. It is the opposite : my choices were to be taken. Yet, I don't think we'll ever be able to predict the whole Universe. There is too much information (it is a really huge book :)).
I know that the human race has no future, that I in fact have no future. But contradictory to what Ugo said, I don't give up any meaning for my existance. I believe that if I try hard enough, I will be remembered not only by those close to me until they die, but also by the rest of the world for centuries. This is my ultimate goal: to achieve something fabulous for the human race, so I will be actually thought in lessons. Then, when the human race ceizes to exist, so be it. The history of mankind is over then, and so will be any need for the people that have lived in the past. Now, the people that lived in the past do have a meaning. Even nameless people, for what would the world be like if those nameless soldiers in the roman armies hadn't lived?
I give to life, no absolute meaning. The only thing I cansay about my life, absolutely, is that I exist. Whatever I add is relative. This doesn't mean I don't want to achieve things, or be remembered in the future. But, the only thing I can do then is live, and let the others choose if I am worth of their remembrance.
My belief is that everything has can have 3 causes- human, natural, and divine. Much of what takes place on earth is caused by humans.
I group all in one. For the first two, I don't understand why I should see myself as independant from Nature. I am part of it, and all my actions are "natural", "physical". I cannot go against the Universe. They are indeed artificial, as they are "made with art", but my actions will nevertheless be natural. What opposes natural is supernatural (metaphysical). As for the last one, divine, I call it supernatural, or metaphysical. Yet, natural and supernatural do not oppose, they only contradict. And if something metaphysical influences the Universe, I would say it is natural as well, Nature then being only a little wider. Everything is part of the Universe for me. So, natural-supernatural is only a dichotomy for me, between things that influences us (nature) and what doesn't (supernatural). Let's say I think in the dichotomy existence/non-existence, because what has no effect on us can exist but can be thought as without existence.
btw, I do believe in evolution- just so you dont think my mind is still in the Dark Ages wink.gif).

I do not believe in it, I believe in the rules of science (what influences me is what exists, to name one such rule), and this way tells me that evolution have occured in species from the beginning. And to not believe in the rules of science is maybe not that retro. Perhaps will we find a new way to apprehend our Universe, and that this new way will be way better than what has been precedently. Then, scientists will be seen as totally outdated and stupidly darkaged :D

  9. Mithrandil: Do we have so agreeing ideas that you cannot distinguish the Quebecling from the Flanderling? :)

Caesar: Neither country can stand without the other- they depend on us for most of their imported resources- lumber, oil, minerals, grains, you name it. But we also depend on them for resources and military protections among other things. This is my main worry. I am all for coexistence and cooperation (this is among the main principles of my sociopolitical project Melville), but if anything should happen, we should all be able to survive on ourselves, alone. To me, this is very important.

  10. As for harddisk space, unless (hobby) drawings can be very heavy, I will not need so much space. And my drawings (and perhaps the memory-heaviest work) would all be related to conworlding, more than anything else. Otherwise, I'd be writing texts (all those planned novels and short stories that are to be written and rewritten...), studying language, listening to music, and... perhaps, playing small simple games. Oh, and probably design a website. That's about it.

But the proposal I was given definitely isn't that good, if I understand you correctly. Well, I can still wait, but it will be a pain each day waiting. I have some budget, not a lot (max... 750$CA so three times what I have showed you), and this is if I wait long enough. Perhaps a clone (as we call those self-built computers that includes componants from different companies, in my province) would be cheaper as well.

  11. Well. hehe, I have been thinking of buying a computer since eons (ok, years)... And now, I have found something that I could afford.

It is 250$CA (200$US or 180EUR or 110£UK or 280$AU or 300$NZ, did I miss someone?), that is, could be paid completely by my parents (they are willing to give me a budget of 250$), but, the specifications aren't quite great :

1,7GHz (it is, still, almost four times what I am using now)

128 Mb RAM (two times mine)

20 Go HD, that is, 2,5 times what I have (though I could easily buy another one, bigger, later)

    CD writer

(and, with it, mouse keyboard and screen 17in (45 cm))

Is it something decent (in regards of the price, and its completely new) or is it the worst bargain I could ever be offered... or something between?

    - Someone whose computer will collapse in a few instants (ok, 7 year old computer barely supporting basic programms)

  12. I would have been killed. I am an esperantophone (speaker of the language Esperanto), and as such, Hitlerism considered esperantophones as brainwashed by the Jews. (Zamenhof was jewish) And. most esperantophones couldn't accept the "superior race" theory even so...

And for why? Perhaps because the Jewish people were great bourgeois. They were among the best in commercial business, and as such, were said to be rich. This was a pain back then, with the great depression and everything, and what was left is to use the fact that they always stayed apart, so remained mysterious, and as such, Hitler or anyone could easily use such distance, alienness, and build a fear around it. It isn't that difficult...

  13. I'll be happy when I will be dying. If I haven't lost all my knowledge of English, this means that I haven't died yet. Yes, I will be nothing after my death, my body will not relate as it used to. But, I was rather thinking about when I'll be old and grey. Hehe.

  14. As a strange atheistic being, perhaps may I answer to your bewilderness towards "morally positive atheists".

So, to all you said about the credo of atheists, well, I will answer : why not?

Yet, there are some details, a human body is not the sum of all its cells, you must also add their relations. This makes it way bigger :) And. as for the human spirit, as for me, it is the sum of all the meaning given to the links between the cells. And, indeed, a human being is the addition of both the body and the spirit, and, finally, their relation.

Morals, to me, their are the ways we have chosen to live our lifes. Good or Evil do not enter here, to me, it is what is pro-living and what is counter-living. And, to every issue, there can be more than one answer. One will probably try to live a way that will be pro-living... (otherwise, he is suicidal)

And for a goal, to me, there is none, absolutely. I have no goal per se, and not only do I live with it, but I take it and think of it as marvellous. If I feel of having no future, why should I be afraid of it. I just go on, as long as I am given, and... wee. Yes, I have fun without having any future.

And for emotions, to my body, they are indeed mere chemical reactions. I do think that way. But remember that I spoke about the spirit. There are meaning behind those relations. One cell has broken, it releases some product that reacts with my nerve. Ok. But I give a meaning to that reaction : pain. And when you add relations like that, you can go further and give more. This is to me my spirit, it is myself,. actually. (I am not my body, it is my mere carrier, though a useful one.)

And now, to our main feature... Why are they so morally positive?

When you come to the no-future issue, you come in front of nihilism, the idea of nothing. And some deeply nihilist people can, at one point, truly think that there is no future, even in the farthest, so they disappear from the world. Yes, and we call this philosophical suicide. As far as I have been told, noone done such thing ever.

Then, here comes the true question, why is nihilism never the absolute answer? Because, even if absolutely meaningless, the fact that we exist is not meaningless. It exists, so it has some substance. Then, we take the absence of future as the absence of duty. I have no duty towards the world. (Remember why I am happy to have no future...)

The only thing I have,. is my own existence, and the meaning I will give it. And., to each, the meaning will be different. But, I think we can summarize that most will choose the path of pro-lifeness, because they have chosen to live. I myself seek pleasure and discovery. But, as I live, I will choose pro-living actions, and they will probably be close (even if not identical) to other morals.

And so, what is left is what you choose. I chose to have the will to live my life. I don't take it as a duty, yet I don't think I should take it as a problem to overcome. It is something to have pride in, and something where we can have fun. So, just to have the will to live. This is, to me, more than enough. And when I'll be dying, I know I'll be happy. As I will have lived.

  15. To all your questions, Caesar, I can give answers :

Belgium has a whole region which to some proportion of its citizens desires to become independant. It's Flanders, the northern part of Belgium. Klaas is among their independentists. (I am one as well, though I do not have a region to which I'll give those feelings, except the utopic (in the litteral sense) Melville. Any regionalism is to me positive in some way.)

Do they have the productive province, perhaps should we think of some Flander province. I have been tought that Flanders is, economically. more productive than Wallonia and Brussel (the two other regions of Belgium). (I am sure you are speaking of Alberta here, aren't you. Well, if you ever try to force them give something, I think Quebec will be the second to part Canada... No, either natural resources are worldly, or they are to those who take care of it. And petroleum might kill Alberta in the future...)

As for the super power, not only do they have one, but they have two : France and Germany. And, within the EU, I am sure those big two want the largest part. So, yes, they have it as well :) (No doubt here about who you are speaking. Yet, I think the one to blame is ourselves. We listen to them. I mean, not only politically, but on a more personal level : how many shows do we watch from the US. Quebec is happy to have a different language here. Be yourself, and you'll never have such problem. Or, if we are so alike, so lets stand together...)

  16. English isn't my native language as you might have guessed.
It isn't technically mine as well, so just let go your ideas. (Yet, I would guess your native language is some romance language. Especially from your use of "risk".)

What I basically mean with "atheistic agnosticist", is that, at some point, I couldn't think that I could get any answer about metaphysics, and that, as for my daily life, I lived as if there was nothing outside Physic. This led for me to secularism, though it may not be the only answer. Not only do I not think metaphysic can lead to some answer, but it seems to me that it is useless and nonsensical, in my life.

Yet, it is important to discuss it, as other people have other answers, and also because not knowing an answer to a question can be at times difficult to support. And we get to see how people answered.

  17. I'd like to present you one of my favorite quotes. It is from me, it is my last reflexion on Justice. I would like to have your thoughts on this tough subject, and yes, it is tough, especially my own answer :

Quote Context : We are in my novel Ie Ien and the main character, Victor Qema Yevicanlemel, is in his ultimate cry, crying for mutual existence. He just stopped a whole war, of, perhaps, galactical scale, if I dare the word. It is huge, and it strained all his own self to death. And now, the "Opponent" who have lost (but the Allies as well have lost, both against Qema and his people) asks Qema about a punishment, as they did not win.

«A Punishment do you say, a Sentence, a Vengence? How would it help? It would do nothing here ; what has been done cannot be undone and what has been cannot be any more. The only thing it would do is to create another emptiness, in a useless attempt to fill in some other emptiness. No ; the only thing that should be done is to go on, remembering the past, living the present, and forsee the future, because what has been brought us here, what is is now us and what will be can be made better. Perhaps knowing that the past will never be no more is worse than any punishment.»

This quote questions a lot. It questions, indeed, justice as we know it here in our society. We always speak of "retribution", as if some physical law existed to reverse everything that happened. Because A happened, B shall happen as well. To me, it does nothing than fill in some emptiness we have from the action against which we feel injustice. To me, any punishment is no more that some vengence.

And yet, what I propose is daring : just... live on. No, nothing can be erased, and this is what I meant in the remembrance of past, but it should not stop us from living. Past is nothing more than those actions which brought us here. It is nothing less either, so it should take its place where it should be : in the Past. Once you can let go the past, you must live into the present. Then, think about what can be better...

Finally, I thought about punishment. There is still that emptiness. But, the fact is that you cannot erase it. So, I think that the best is to live on, knowing that what has been done will never be undone.

  18. There are two ways to see the world's existence, and perhaps there can we find the two general answers.

There is to see the world as a long line of happenings. Yet, if there is a line, either is there a beginning and an end, or there's neither (or only one of them...). If there's a beginning, this is the First Cause. This has been sought for by a lot of occidental thinkers. To view some Transcendantal being as the First Cause is a view. Some thought about an initial Chaos, that is, there was something at the beginning, and it took shape by its own (that is, everything is inside the Universe, nothing transcendantal). Or, as me, you made the "ad absurdem" reflexion of the "cause of a cause" (What's the cause of God). As I said once, if you stop somewhere, you think that something must have no cause... Or be its own cause. It could be anything.

Yet, we also have another view, a circular view. Instead of a line, you have a circle. The universe goes on and on, on a line that never ends but forever crosses the same points, repeating itself. There is no beginning and no end, but, you have a limit (it is not an infinite line). There is no idea of what was first, but the idea is to look to the succession of happennings, leading to that circular view, and everything that has been will be again, as they always have been.

Shintou, to give an example I know well, has nothing metauniversal in it. The world began, and it is it, and everything is in this world. Their "gods" are better thought as etheral beings that live in the world as we do, only in a different manner. Their existence is concommitent to humans : they are together and cannot be distinguished. To them, there is nothing outside the world.

  19. Well, to answer as a secularist (who think that what is metaphysical is irrelevant in my life in the Universe), perhaps I may explain how did I begin to think this way.

To me, life is my existence in this world, this is what I live, this is what is worth living. Not only do i don't think there is nothing after my body dies for me, but i don't think it would be so great. Life is enough, my hope is to have fun and happiness in what I do, end then die, having done my part and my will. To have the luck to see this Universe is to me well enough ;)

  20. To your last quote, I would answer that I have seen a lot of scientists in my life, and they still had beliefs. (In fact, I am myself one, about linguistics) Those beliefs do not necessarly speak about a god (I am not theist, deist or pantheist) but they do speak about our place in the Universe, they speak about the essence of it, even if only a little. They may differ in a lot of ways to what a lot have seen in some religions, but they exist .
