  1. Hi... I don't think my laptop (an HP Pavilion dv9830us made in 2008) would run 12.04 very well along with the fact I don't care for the look of Unity. Apart from that, why upgrade from an OS that has been pleasant to use and very reliable overall? At the point in the future when I absolutely I have to upgrade, it would need to be a lightweight distribution like Lubuntu or Puppy. So there is no package anywhere on the net that is what I'm looking for? EDIT: I see this page here but I don't see any debs. Regards...
  2. Hi all... I just tried to install 0ad again and I noticed the game wasn't showing up in Synaptic even though I reenabled the PPA. in Software Sources. I'm guessing this is because 10.04 is longer being fully supported. But is there a way I can download the packages of the old alpha 11 game from somewhere? That is what I had last. Thanks!
  3. Ah, I see. Best not to get me started on that.... Regards...
  4. Thank you but I'm not entirely sure what you mean. Regards...
  5. Hi guys... After playing the current alpha for a while, I would like to make some observations (and request changes) that quite possibly have been mentioned before by others... 1. The elephants don't walk (move their legs) as the other animals do nor do they make an elephant sound when they die in battle, they make a sound of a horse! Is a fix for this in the works? I like the sound the elephants make in AOE II, not to brash or loud. 2. Increase the overall amount of metal one can gain in trade (market place.) As so many of the units, buildings and technologies in the game depend on this resource, if you're playing a tiny or small map, it can take a long time to build up enough metal to raise up a suitable army. 3. Although the Aegis AI is an improvement in certain ways, it is a bit too defensive in approach, so it doesn't really make a challenging opponent. What I do like about it is that I have time to get my economy going and some rudimentary defenses in place before and if it does decide to attack. Along those lines, I would still really like to see a "peace time" option included in the game that would allow for that, particulalrly if an aggressive AI option is adopted in the future. AOE II would be almost impossible for me in the "moderate" and "hard" levels because of this. 4. War dogs don't collapse when killed in battle, some just change color slightly and continue standing in the spot they were killed for a minute or two. However, including a pack of these fuzzies with your army can decimate an opposing force very quickly, so the're great to use when playing the civilizations that have them. 5. Allow the special buildings and units, such as the Hellenic (Greek) Royal Stoa, as an example, to be built in random maps as well. Bring back the heroes as soon as possible. 6. As in AOE II, add camel and mameluke fighting units for middle eastern civs, like Persia, if historically accurate... http://ageofempires.wikia.com/wiki/Mameluke 7. While it's possible I didn't notice this in the game, are there plans to implement a "convert" option for enemy units? Also, I would like to see the "feminine mystique" attribute for the Spartans implemented. That would be a big plus (for this civ) rather than having to immedietely rush all of the villagers to the nearest civic center or castle when an enemy force goes after them. 8. The female villagers "death" sounds are mostly (not entirely) corny and unrealistic. Any way to update them? On the plus side... 1. I love using Athenian naval units along with their marines when playing a coastal map such as "Gulf of Bothnia," as this is a great way to distract and harass the AI (enemy) while building up an army large enough to conquer them. The AI will always send every available villager and soldier to try and repair buildings the ships are shooting arrows at, resulting in their death. 2. The Iberian tower has the capabilty to house ten soldiers instead of five, making it a formidable structure for any opponent, especially when you build several of them close together, within reach of each other's firing range and choose the "crenellations" upgrade, allowing a soldier to fire two arrows at one time, instead of one. This allows for a twenty shot tower(s) that is, I think, impossible for any opponent with infantry and calvary to overcome without seige equipment. Regards...
  6. Thank you, dvangennip, for your information, ticket and link. Hope this gets resolved by the time the next release comes out. Regards...
  7. Hi all... From what I understand reading the history section in the game, the female villagers were supposed to respond to an attack by fighting back but in a game that ended a few minutes ago (playing the Spartans,) the villagers tried to walk away instead. Does anyone have an idea as to why this happened and how to fix it? Regards...
  8. Hi... Is this the feature that allows you to create your own scenerios? Regards...
  9. Hi all.... Never mind, I found this... http://www.wildfiregames.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=15796 "This is a temporary measure for Alpha 11 to prevent abusing the hero system. It is intended for any player to have at most one living hero at a time. This limit will be introduced after Alpha 11." That's too bad...
  10. Hi all... I'm not sure if it has to do with the choice of AI's, but for some reason, after installing the new Alpha 11 release, I can no longer purchase many of the special units or heroes, such as Leonidas or Xerxes. The thumbnail is grayed out and I'm told that it will be available in a future release. Can anyone tell me why that is? Game lag and choppiness is still pretty bad when playing with more than one AI player. On the plus side, I do appreciate the new shared LOS between allies. Also, as a suggestion for a future release, it would be helpful if we could build towers or other defensive buildings on a ally's territory to help defend them. In AOE II, I used to build one or two castles right next to my computer ally's town center and houses and garrison them with as many archers as they would hold. The opposing AI's usually had a fair degree of difficulty defeating my ally because of this. Regards...
  11. Hi all.... I was thinking along the lines of a morale boost as well, such as increased hit points when your soldiers are attacked or more damage inflicted on the enemy when you attack. Regards...
  12. Hi... I didn't know that, thanks! I would suspect that there would be a slight difference when the AI is able implement the technologies. Regards...
  13. Hi all... I tried out version 10 today and although it was nice having the additional maps and nations, I can't say I really cared for the "town upgrade" feature reminiscent of Age of Empires. Although, what is nice about it is that it takes longer for the AI to attack you, allowing you more time to build up your defenses. While I realize the game is still in Alpha, The AI is still in need of a lot of work. I was playing the "Third Macedonian War" map and had opted to play the Macedonians. The army I was given was sufficient to eliminate the small Roman town or outpost. However, by that time, the "Greek allies" of Rome managed to do the same to my army and after a while, began to attack my town in force. I think I would have lost this map had it not been for one thing... The AI found out I still had chickens around my town center and literally sent almost every villager and soldier it had on hand to harvest these chickens while my towers and fortresses were picking them off one by one! We're talking around 50 to 100 units total! Needless to say, their goes the AI's economy and unit production capabilities and I was able to wipe out their (large) city with very light, (almost non-existant) opposition. That was something else... Regards...
  14. Hi... Really? That kind of surprises me since their hero swordsmen, if I remember correctly, can go through buildings like the elephants! Regards...
  15. Hi all... How interesting, I had enemy villagers build a tower for me while their soldiers killed off the one soldier I had building it at the same time. I guess they were bored! Regards...
  16. Hi... I'm sorry, for some reason I completely misunderstood your question. Regards....
  17. Hi... Do you mean build two markets and have the trader (camel for the Persians, I've noticed, horses for others) go back and forth between the two of them? Regards...
  18. Hi... I was thinking in terms of Age of Empires II, which had both male and female villagers. Once garrisoned, they shot arrows at the attackers. Should villagers, male and female, who have no military training have the same attack that trained archers have? Realistically, no. However, having the ladies be able to garrison for safety and protection is a lot better than having them killed and having to replace them. Regards...
  19. Hi.... I couldn't agree more. Regards...
  20. Hi... A couple of additional suggestions... 1. The tigers look pretty strange all orange. Perhaps some additional artwork could go into making these guys look more realistic. 2. I add my agreement with those wanting a "town bell" feature that once clicked, the female villagers would gather inside unoccupied town centers and towers and act as archers. Also, to ensure that metal can be collected after the supply from the rocks is exhausted, how about an a neutral trading post in some of the maps that no side can attack and/or destroy. I have also found that an ally doesn't always build a market. Regards...
  21. Hi... Can anyone give me an idea why some maps tend to cause the game to become very slow and choppy, almost to where I cannot even move the mouse, after about 10-15 minutes into it? I run Ubuntu 10.04, my lspci readout, if it helps... 00:00.0 Host bridge: Intel Corporation Mobile PM965/GM965/GL960 Memory Controller Hub (rev 0c) 00:01.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation Mobile PM965/GM965/GL960 PCI Express Root Port (rev 0c) 00:1a.0 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) USB UHCI Controller #4 (rev 03) 00:1a.1 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) USB UHCI Controller #5 (rev 03) 00:1a.7 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) USB2 EHCI Controller #2 (rev 03) 00:1b.0 Audio device: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) HD Audio Controller (rev 03) 00:1c.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) PCI Express Port 1 (rev 03) 00:1c.1 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) PCI Express Port 2 (rev 03) 00:1c.5 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) PCI Express Port 6 (rev 03) 00:1d.0 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) USB UHCI Controller #1 (rev 03) 00:1d.1 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) USB UHCI Controller #2 (rev 03) 00:1d.2 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) USB UHCI Controller #3 (rev 03) 00:1d.7 USB Controller: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) USB2 EHCI Controller #1 (rev 03) 00:1e.0 PCI bridge: Intel Corporation 82801 Mobile PCI Bridge (rev f3) 00:1f.0 ISA bridge: Intel Corporation 82801HEM (ICH8M) LPC Interface Controller (rev 03) 00:1f.1 IDE interface: Intel Corporation 82801HBM/HEM (ICH8M/ICH8M-E) IDE Controller (rev 03) 00:1f.2 SATA controller: Intel Corporation 82801HBM/HEM (ICH8M/ICH8M-E) SATA AHCI Controller (rev 03) 00:1f.3 SMBus: Intel Corporation 82801H (ICH8 Family) SMBus Controller (rev 03) 01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: nVidia Corporation G86 [GeForce 8600M GS] (rev a1) 02:00.0 Network controller: Intel Corporation PRO/Wireless 4965 AG or AGN [Kedron] Network Connection (rev 61) 08:00.0 Ethernet controller: Realtek Semiconductor Co., Ltd.
