Greatest battles against the odds
Mythos_Ruler replied to Leonidas I's topic in Introductions & Off-Topic Discussion
I chose Rorke's Drift because even though the Brits faced the same odds as Leonidas faced at Thermopylae or the Texans at the Alamo they actually WON! Amazing feat. I'd like to see a 21st century movie tackle that one again. -

Darius. I like the Machaira. Would be a good cavalry weapon!
-
Thinking about it, a quick little flash intro would be nice... a quick slideshow with music wouldn't hurt.
-
No intro videos planned at this time. Think about it - the game is going to be downloaded; an intro video would be a huge addition to the download for something that everyone will skip anyways! Might as well leave videos and such as standalone promotional materials in the media downloads section of the website.

Will the source be released? Text to speech engine ?
Mythos_Ruler replied to madmax's topic in General Discussion
Day and Night will be possible, but we don't use it in a "standard" game. Hope that helps. -
Hilarity. He's got a great voice.

And a response! -
Best. Video. Evar.

Little did I know those Spartan mods make it multiplayer incompatible.

I was just about to post Hegemonia. Really looking forward to that one. I wish their campaign map was more focused on Greece, but it's still looking awesome.

Thanks Mr. Caesar. The Revision Log is now fixed and shows an accurate display of the things we've been doing with the game.

Reporting for duty!

Hi. My name is Julian Philipos Pericles... just kidding. Nice to have you with us, man! Hope you like it here. Hope you like what we've shown you guys so far! -
http://www.msnbc.msn.com/id/13892600/ Being somewhat of an architectural novice myself, I certainly support Brad Pitt's agenda here. If we rebuild New Orleans, let's do it *right* - and *right now*. I also recommend you launch the MSN video. It's a good interview.

You're absolutely right, in that usually an archer never knew whether his arrow hit its mark or not in a full scale battle. Arrows were usually loosed in massed volleys. What we'll probably do here is make arrows awfully inaccurate, but extremely deadly. No more taking 5 or 6 direct-hit arrows nonsense you see in other games. One or two direct hits and your unit is dead. But there will be special cases where infantry pierce armor is increased substatially, like when using a phalanx or testudo formation (especially this one).

Today we release a new Unit Showcase detailing the Spartiate Super Unit for the Hellenes civilisation. He is one of the most fearsome infantry units in the game and will be a force to be reckoned with by his enemies. We are sure you will agree! Click the preview image to take you to the full showcase: http://www.wildfiregames.com/~art/showcase/showcase-unit-spartans(thumb).jpg We also announce the addition of four new members to the Wildfire Games team. These daring, intrepid souls include: Christopher Ebbert (aka Bonk) - GUI Programmer Sebastien Lussier (aka BobJelly) - Graphics Programmer David Protasowski (aka Dave) - Gameplay Programmer Christoph Gielisch (aka m0l0t0ph) - Animator Please, welcome them aboard!

Yep, very excellent AOE1 remake thread there at AOE3 Heaven. I like most of the ideas presented. Cool thing is, Indians are included, as AOE1 had a broader scope than 0 A.D. does (for better and for worse).

With the nature of the game and how we are constructing the game, you should be able to add entire civilizations at-will, or replace existing ones if you wish. I think it'd be better to just ADD another civilisation since then it won't cause multiplayer issues for those who download your mod. I think maybe someone else could give you a better answer, but I am sure I am correct.

There will be both, actually. Currently we have spec'd that formations take a minimum number of soldiers in order to be used. For instance (and this is just an example off the top of my head), you will need 12 spearmen in order to make a phalanx. If you don't have 12 or more spearmen, then the phalanx is not a formation available to them. You'd have to use a lesser formation like "line" or "skirmish" or "scatter" or no formation at all. furthermore, let's say you do have 12 or more spearmen and you put them into formation. They will fight in that formation until enough die that they fall below the minimum amount. At that time the phalanx is broken and it's bonuses no longer available to those units. You'd either retreat and regroup with more men or continue to fight in a "mash" as you say. I think it'll be very possible to set your rally point and send a stream of soldiers at the enemy or battlesite, but with the nature of our formations and the substantial bonuses they give, it'd be more productive in most situations to group your men and form them up before they head into battle. So, either way of battle is possible. It just depends on the situation and how you want to use your units.

Actually, it'll be so easy to mod this game you'll be able to add a new civ within a month of the game's release.
-
I think that would be a little outside our timeperiod. Definately a good choice for a future "content addon pack." We've (Paul and I) have batted around ideas for a Diadachi / Macedonia hybrid civ. They'd be a sweet civ. I have yet to see them prominently in any RTS. I'm afraid the scope of our game doesn't really include the Indians, no matter how cool they are. We're including civs that effected Rome in both parts of our game's time periods. Part 1 is 500BC - 1BC and the Indians had little to virtually no contact with Rome at this time. Indians would be a sweet civ for an AOE1 Redux though.

Battle of Gaugamela clip from "Alexander"
Mythos_Ruler replied to Paal_101's topic in General Discussion
The best parts of that battle were at the end of the speech where he says, "Zeus be with us!" and the Macedonians go wild and the music swells up. Wow. The next best is when Alexander and the Hetairoi take "the left turn" and totally catch Bessus off guard. It's so cool to see the Hypaspistai ("silver shields") charging into the hole in the Persian line with Alexander. Also pretty neat is the portrayal of psiloi and peltastai. All-in-all a great battle scene - one of the best put on film. I do notice these videos are cut differently than my "Director's Cut" DVD of the battle. Looks like the scenes are taken from the "Theatrical Cut" release. My Director's Cut battle has a few different shots and is slightly tighter in the editing. -
