We hope to improve performance a lot before a final release, but for now it's recommended to not play on too large maps, not play with more than one or two AIs (and definitely don't play with AIs on island maps as AIs don't yet support them, or use docks etc for that matter, so it would be very boring), and also not play with too many players at the same time in general.
