cannot deselect units from group once it's formed

How do I select or deselect a subset of a previously created group?

Mac Monterey using the latest version of the game. 

When I create a group, I can no longer select a subset of the group. Clicking a single unit selects all units.

I have tried unsetting the group, alt clicking, right clicking, alt right shift banana clicking, and once I poked the screen with my nose.

Once every 17th day, I'm suddenly able to do this. Once. Then it quits again.

I'm not sure what exactly you mean, but it could be that the units are in formation. If that's the case just select the top left formation to not have any formation. You should then be able to select single units.

Disable the formation.

Or you could go to Options -> Game Session and turn the "Battalion-style formations" option off.

Thanks mutely, @Vantha and @causative. I'll confirm that, but it sounds like that's what's up. (After I posted this health issues led me to forget about it which is why it took me so long to reply.)
