I ran redhat on a pentium 166mhz years ago, and it worked perfectly fine, no lag, quick compilation time, installing it on one of those alienwares seem like overkill redefined.
when i partitioned i did it in windows with partition magic, its a lot less hassle than a last minute linux installation partition. make sure you have an additional swap drive if you want it to run faster. Swap should be equal to your MAX memory at least.
