  1. I was wondering when somebody who could model would show up! Your models look pretty great, espcially the guns. I was wondering if maybe you wouldn't mind trying to make a falx model for a Thracian mod I am planning/making? Basically a falx is a very curved sword. Here are some images:

To give an idea of size

Anyways, it's really cool that we now have a modeler. Hopefully you will be able to help create some great mods for this game.

  2. Glad to see this topic has generated so much interest. I'll post a detailed response when I have more time to read through all the comments. One thing I'd like to say though is that I'd like to stay away from more obscure civilizations. So while the Etruscans and the Indus Valley are fascinating to study, we don't know enough about them to make a faction out of them for an RTS game.

  3. By the way, that doesnt look like a falx, a falx was a massive scythe thingy wasnt it?

There was a two handed version, the rhomphaia, which was much longer and straighter. The falcata that I'm using is the closest thing in game right now, so I'm using that (falx and falcata both come from Latin "sickle", I believe, so it makes sense)

  4. I think the reason that I can't take the high resolution screenshots is because my keyboard is broken. In the meantime, here are some low res screenshots of the units I made. No texture editing involved, just me messing around with the Actor Editor. They are Thracian Cavalry and Falxman.

  5. Ok. I'm making a swordsman, so I chose infantry_melee_swordsman or something like that. When I try to place the unit in Atlas, I get this error message:

ERROR: CXeromyces: Parse error: units/thracian_warrior:1: Did not expect element Actor there

ERROR: CXeromyces: Parse error: units/thracian_warrior:1: Element Entity has extra content: Actor

    ERROR: RelaxNGValidator: Validation failed

I know next to nothing about code/programming, so I probably made some really basic error.

  6. Hmm, Etruscans might work. They are interesting because the language they spoke was a language isolate, not related to the Indo-European languages around them. I'm not sure how much we actually know about their language, but I know they wrote in the Greek script.

Same thing applies to the Minoans (although some researchers believe that Minoan, Etruscan, Rhaetian and Lemnian were part of a pre-Indo-European language family called Aegean or Tyrsenian). I think I might just stick with the six I have now...

Btw, I'm sort of waiting until a later edition of 0 AD comes out to actually start modelling, because I think that some of the Persian units look like they would make good bases for these ancient units.

  7. The Khazar story is pretty iffy and dubious. There are similar stories in Yemen btw.

How do you mean? The Khazar's conversion to Judaism is pretty well documented. What is dubious is to what extent the general population converted and if the Khazars were the ancestors of the Ashkenazi Jews. Most scholars seem to agree that the conversion to Judaism was mainly among the upper class. And the claim that the Ashkenazi are descended from the Khazars and not the Israelites is also not widely accepted.

As for pre-Islamic Arabia, many tribes did practice Judaism, as well as Christianity and traditional paganism.

  8. This is an idea for a mod that I've been thinking about and working on for a while now. It covers the time period from about 2000 BC (the Middle Kingdom of Egypt) to about 550 BC (the founding of the Achaemenid Empire). Think of it sort of as the prologue to 0 AD. This time range is very rough and I'm taking a 0 AD approach: each civilization will be represented at the height of it's power. The civilizations I have chosen so far are:

    -The Assyrians

    -The Babylonians

    -The Egyptians

    -The Hebrews

-The Hittites (the Anatolian Hittites, not the Biblical ones)

-The Medes (redone Persian civilization from 0 AD)

    Some more possibilities are:

-The Hellenes (probably not, since they weren't all that important for most of this period)

    -The Phoenicians (redone Carthaginians)

As for gameplay and such, I'm waiting until 0 AD comes out, but I have some vague ideas in my head.

This thread is sort of for planning and such so I want to know if you think the factions I have chosen are interesting/appropriate or if there are any others you can think of.

BTW, this mod needs a catchy name!

PS: I have a completed Assyrian outline but I did it all in Akkadian. By the time of Assyria's height, the language was Aramaic, I believe, so I will redo all the unit names.

  9. For some reason they're not going there, so I just did Print Screen and pasted it into paint. Here is my fisrt modest attempt at modding the game: a Viking Huskarl.

BTW, I love the Actor Editor! Can't wait for the full game to come out so I have more material to mod with.

  10. There was no such thing as Serbia in 0AD-1453AD. But if you are trying to make it into a Byzantine era game then your state would be called Macedonia. Byzantine Macedonia included Thessaloniki (ancient Macedonia) and essentially all of the Balkans.

Umm, Macedonia was never independant in the medieval period, but Serbia was. Just read about Stefan Dusan and the Serbian Empire.
