Oh, and for the record Boadicca is over rated. She doesn't deserve half the hype and reputation she's somehow accumilated over the two millenia.

It's actually refreshing to see your women protrayed realistically clothed rather than as the usual stereotypical gratuitous fleshpots. Your examples are still nice looking, but are tasteful, historical and believable. Thank you and well done.

Very suggestive piece. I do like art that tells a story while retaining subtlety and taste. This harrowing tale is as grim and as horrific as can be - yet the censors are kept happy. Very clever. Well done.

Could perhaps work for a fighting-against Spartacus-Caesar when he was under Crassus. Caesar was still a tribune then. Even so, he does look a little young, Caesar gained command and real success rather late in life.

Interesting interpretation of Sulla. One doesn't often see depictions of Rome from this just-before-Caesar period. Very interesting. Love the Pteruges.

Hardly surprising. In essence that (and the Spanish Scutarii) are what Roman Legionaries were based on.

Blue are the Hellenes/Greeks and red are the Romans, I think. Although they could feasibly be veteran Carthaginians...err

Outright undeniable "Proof" of sandals being worn is frankly difficult to find. The artists of the time liked to portray their subjects in a heroic mould (little to no armour, sometimes no clothes, beautiful bodies etc etc) and weren't known for depicting reality or accuracy. As for the writers, well even back then they never let the truth get in the way of a good story. The first "histories" were more mythological fiction than actual historical accounts as we know them.In short, artistic licence was as alive and well then as it is today.
Meanwhile leather sandals, unlike metal breastplates and greaves, tend to have rotted away during the intervening two millenia.
Which is all a long way of saying, common sense and inforned speculation is about all we have to go on for some things.
Personally sandals make sense to me. The Greeks were, after all, sensible enough to wear boots and heavy cloaks in cold weather and when travelling. The Greeks wrapped up just like everyone else. So why the resistence to sandals?! It wasn't all nude wrestling you know!

Numidians horse peoplese were quite well respcted in ancient times. Apparently they were the perfect counter to the dreaded horse archers who, used to being able to manouvre and fight at liberty, didn't like it when fast moving javelin throwers caught them up!
