  1. Hi Alex, good to see HG people here! I don't think I really met you since I stopped visiting HG forums a few months after AOE3 came out, but I used to be pretty active at AOMH. If you are interested in helping out later, you could talk to us about what's possible (there may be more things as the game comes closer to completion), otherwise feel free to comment on stuff.

  2. Hi Arissa,

Welcome to Wildfire Games! Just to make it clear, our team members are all volunteers - nobody receives a salary, and 0 A.D. will be released as freeware. However, our project is ambitious and the goal is for us all to gain game development experience, so volunteering here could certainly be helpful for getting into the game industry. If you're interested in joining us, you should fill in an application form here. This way we'll also contact you to talk further (probably through email or MSN). What kind of work would you be interested in? I assume programming (which we do in C++) or scripting (in JavaScript/XML)? We are looking for people in both those areas, in several fields.

  3. Makes sense. I think the Mac Mini is supposed to be the highest "value" Mac though - at least that's what my friends who wanted to try Macs got. There are some with 1.6 GHz Core Duo now, which should be plenty for Photoshop.

  4. I'm not sure whether TLA will have Conquer the World either. It is something we thought about a little bit, and it might be added in 0AD part 2, but so far we concluded that scripted campaigns and single random maps add a lot more so we're focusing on those first. Anyway TLA and 0AD will use the same engine and it will be very easy to use a model from 0AD in TLA or vice-versa.

  5. Our graphics are in pretty "open" formats, and furthermore we'll release importers/exporters from common formats. So, it's very likely that you'll be able to access them when you get the game. We certainly won't allow anyone to use them commercially, but I don't think it's even be possible to disallow personal use like you're mentioning. Lots of people use graphics from other sources for personal projects, and it's fine .

  6. Do you know any programming? If not, the best thing to do is to learn some programming first, and then learn how to apply that to games (once you understand the basic concepts of programming, creating one particular type of program is just a matter of calling the right libraries, e.g. a graphics library, sound library, etc for a game). Personally I learned programming from books - they generally have more content, and it's easier than alt-tabbing between windows. Go to your local library or bookstore and look for books on learning programming. Read through a few pages and see if they make sense, and pick a book whose style you like.

  7. Well, it would be cool to have a Total War-like game where you are a general that commands troops with voice commands, rather than selecting individual ones and tasking them around. You'd give high level commands, like "left flank, retreat" or "cavalry, to me". Maybe the tone of your voice could modify their morale or terrify them into action (if you sound scary enough). The point is that you're simulating what real millitary commanders have to do. It doesn't make much sense in a standard RTS game though ("you! gather berries from this bush!").

  8. I have a year of undergrad left, and after that I'll go to grad school for a Masters. Afterwards, I'll continue in academia if I find an interesting area to work on, or go into the software industry otherwise (or if I see a particularly promising industry position). I've done both research work and industry work in my summers and both have been interesting to me, but I think it's harder to get into research after working in industry than the other way around.

  9. Some notes on performance:

    - Not much optimizing has been done yet.

    - What you're seeing is the highest level of special effects - there will be "medium" and "low" settings too.

I don't think we can say more about performance until we're closer to release, but we do want the game to reach as many people as possible, and we have team members still running fairly old graphics cards who want to play the game :P. (Including me - I developed the water code on an Nvidia 5200, which just barely supports shaders, although working on it has seriously encouraged me to buy a new graphics card).

  10. If you look at the frequency of terrorist acts in Iraq after the war, you'll see that it's been steadily increasing over the 2 years. Quality of life is not particularly great either. Whatever its intentions may have been, the war is helping to fuel terrorism, because it's providing more people with a reason to hate the west. Look at it from the perspective of someone there: First, they're told by a few extremist organizations (Al Quaeda, etc) that the west is evil and they must fight against it. Then the west occupies a country for no reason (you can bet the press there presented all the evidence that Saddam did not have WMD or terrorist links), exactly as those extremist organizations warned. Two years after, despite promises of reconstruction, the country is still in ruins. What are the people going to think about it now? Obviously attacking civillians is a very wrong response to occupation, but any people cruel enough to do that are being driven to do it by the war. I think the only solution other than withdrawing is to put money into reconstruction (by the UN) as opposed to fighting and show people that we actually mean them well, but it doesn't look like that's happening.

  11. Great timing - we're actually just about to release a showcase on trampling and other features :P. Currently heavy cavalry can charge and trample units around them while doing that, though there aren't any graphical effects yet (people flying and stuff). Hopefully it will be more useful than AOE3's suicidal trample, though against certain formations, trying to charge into the front would be a very bad idea.

  12. Do you know if nvdia gforce 6800 supports the OpenGL thing, cause I never heard of it before?

OpenGL is an open standard that's been around for a long time and both Nvidia and ATI have been contributing to it heavily. Many games use OpenGL, such as Doom 3 and all games for Mac or Linux (since it's the main graphics library available there). The only reason you don't hear about it is that it's implemented by the graphics drivers, it's not a separate library like DirectX, so as long as you have the latest graphics drivers you don't need to install anything else to run the game.
