SumTinWong
hi,my name is Alex, i am 22 years old and i am currently living in germanyim working as a programmer - or to be more exact im in my vacational training, which takes 3 years in germany and is very intensive.the programming language i am most experienced with is java - but i just couldnt find open source RTS games which are looking so promising like this one and are made with java. So i think i might join you.I see this as a great opportunity to gain more experience as a programmer and to get better with c++ and everything else that is used in this project.hope i will find some time during this week to finally get started.GreetingsSumTinWong
Jeru
Hi Alex, no part of 0 A.D. is written in Java. Only C++ and JavaScript (which has very little to do with Java except its name).
SumTinWong
"What is the code like?...There's roughly 150K lines of C++ for the game engine, and another 25K for editing tools. Gameplay scripting uses JavaScript. ..."i read that (and a lot more) before i made my post so i know that you arent using java. However being a programmer doesnt mean that you completely focus on one language and ignore everything else. I am willing to try c++ (i already have some experience with it but just not enough). As soon as i tired out some stuff and got used to c++/javascript i might submit my application. Until then i just wanted to say hi and get a better impression of the community
Jeru
I guess I misread your post, sorry, welcome to the forums!
Ykkrosh
Indeed, welcome . C++ is weird in lots of special ways, but not really fundamentally different to other languages, so I think it just takes some practice and experience. It's probably not my favourite language, but I can't really imagine writing a game like this in anything else.Anyway, if you want to get involved with the programming then it may be best to start with some small things to explore the code and see if it's a project you're still interested in working on - there's a few listed here, and there might be others we can think of if there's a specific area you'd prefer to focus on.JavaScript (which has very little to do with Java except its name)Interesting/Boring fact: Firefox still supports <script type="text/mocha"> and <script type="text/livescript"> (as synonyms for text/javascript), which were the original names before Netscape's marketing people thought it'd be a great idea to confuse everybody by putting "Java" in the name (which is trademarked by Sun and so Microsoft had to call it "JScript" instead and the standards body had to call it "ECMAScript", making it even more confusing).
