    L/OS RTS XMAS Invite

    (Libre / Open Source RTS crews informal and relaxed meetup)

    Date and time:   tbd (for me 30th of Dec or 2nd Jan ca. 21 CET are best)

    Where:                tbd (Suggestion: Gather.Town )

    Who:                   OS RTS game devs (I'd expand scope for later events)

    Why? :                To have fun meeting the people behind other great games :) !                  


    I've set up a Matrix ( https://app.element.io/#/room/!prhUKXgZSvSgDryEPy:matrix.org ) and Discord ( https://discord.gg/YmMzRjFp ) Space - bridged of course :P. Idea being having a central spot for feedback and getting those "tbd"s set :).

    Hi, I meant to put out the invitation yesterday, so since its getting closer, I'll just say I'd like to meetup informally to celebrate our / your Games (+ as a preliminary step to possible cooperation :P). The dates that work best for me are the 30th of December, and the 2nd of January - around 21:00 CET.

    Details (and link to the "invite server") should follow this evening!

  3. Hey, if there's a better place to ask, please point me there :).

    I've had this thought a while, that the various (well polished) Open-Source Games would very much profit from greater communication or even cooperation.

    So question: Would there be any interest from Wildfire Games team in talking in one way or another with people eg from Warzone 2100,  Zero-K, or Beyond all Reason? (all RTS games)

    To clarify - I'm not actually from any of those groups, but I'd be happy to takle a "project" facilitating cross-talk :).

  4. Ok, I've been rooting round the SpringRTS forums (I've not been round there myself - 'xept for short glimpses - the last 10 years :P ).

    My impression was right, what most games use is a lobby-client bot, that also starts headless "dedicated" servers that run the game:

    I'm sure this helped address some issues (lag and other), but from descriptions I read here, that's only part of the problem for you.

     

    Side note: a difference between here and things with SpringRTS, is that over there, its more of an "ecosystem" than the more clearly deliminated and official components that you have here (my impression - The "SPADS" server being an example of that). I reckon both has its advantages and disadvantages.

    Hey, I'm new here, so if my comments are not helpful or useful - no need to get into depth explaining, I'm just trying to share views (and I didn't understand everything on the page you linked).

    I'm coming from the SpringRTS engine community, and there "dedicated servers" are more or less the norm, as far as I can tell. If iirc, that's true both for the "lobby side", ie setting up the game (which I think you are just implementing?), as well as running the game / simulation

    Ok, I notice I'm not sure enough to give much insight, I'll check on SpringRTS side and get back to you :P.

    I'm Sean, from Heidelberg, Germany. (And my Nick stands for my first name, followed by the initials of my second names :P. - CJ).

    I'm just installing 0 AD right now.

    The reason I'm here is because I'd like to see better cooperation between different Libre / Open Source Games (RTS games to get started with). But more on that in a different thread + Subforum :P .
