Currency System

I think it would be neat if we had some sort of game system to use the currency on. For example a card game like poker. dirrectly linked to the forum and you could gamble away your money. I've never been to a real casino or betted real money but I think that would be fun.

And we could have contests with entry fees.

Drawing contests, Story contest.

But ultimately it comes down to what can you do with the currency. (i agree that is the best term)

I didn't see it mentioned but I don't think anyone should ever start with any currency otherwise people could register several times and donate them to one account.

Middle Earth doesn't exactly have a currency though.

Silver pennies, Gold Coins, jewels, mithril, etc.

In FotR, Frodo and Sam use Silver pennies to buy Bill the Pony :)

But it would be neat to write some gambling games or something for people to do when they're bored, that are accesible right here on the forums and tie into currency directly.

I'm thinking things that have a direct relation to currency.... well implies currency :)

But, to my knowledge... unless we get rich we won't every use the points to purchase things. More of a use for special little bonuses that WFG can provide its members with.

So... in addition to being project neutral, I would also suggest it be independant from the link between the term and money to avoid confusion.

Heh! He said, "Tokens"; Acumen said, "Tokens". How many "Tolkiens" do I get for... um...

...

(*turns off "Tolkien" Nerdery Toggle Switch*)

I agree with kor. I think for now the Admins should be the ones "fining" spammers and others who offer negative influence. We've got great Admins, who are on the forums most/all the time. The rest of us "can" still affect any user's Reputation, remember?

Re: increasing points for starting threads: I've used forums where people start alot of threads... for no reason... over and over again. It's no fun, at least not if you'd like to see only "useful" threads on the current topics page.

Questions:

1. How can I get a hero cookie?

2. Will fining individuals be too much work for Admins once WFG gets bigger?

3. What's the status on my hero cookie?

In other words, I think too much attention on "forum-life" may drive the emphasis off of the purpose for creating the forums: the games themselves.

1.) *ships Hero cookie*

2.) Our base of Guardians will grow with the size of our community, so this will not be any problem.

3.) It's there.

In other words, I think too much attention on "forum-life" may drive the emphasis off of the purpose for creating the forums: the games themselves.

That's why we have the Community- and Webdev-team. They are supposed to deal with anything related to´the Community. There is the Development Team, though (well, no clear boundaries between the two, because some people wear more than one hat), which is supposed to focus on the Development of the games.

Just a quick question here, if points are there to show appreciation for good posts and such, what is the real difference between it and reputation? Except that in currency you also have postcount included. Don't get me wrong, cause I like both of them, and want to keep em both as well. It's just that they seem to do the same thing right now... If you perhaps made it so that you had an auto-ban for a week or so if someone dropped to -20 in reputation, and did....uh, something else with currency. Perhaps you could allow larger sigs at some point, or allow pics in sigs...I don't know, just distinguish the two a bit, cause right now there's hardly any difference as I see it.

Also, I'd rather see scrapping points/gold/coins whatever and simply have the number. Something like:

Currency: 23

Points sounds a bit artificial to me.

Thing is that reputation is what people give out if a certain someone helped them a lot. That means reputation shows quality of a person.

Currency shows both quality of a person and activity. Whilst you can get extra currency by donations, you can up it my regular posting. Also, currency will be used for Premum Website COntent. You may ask now, why not just use Reputation for that ? Well, somebody can have a thousand posts, good posts, but never really received reputation for an unknown reason. That'd mean s/he contributed a lot to the community, but can't access the Premium COntent, which is made for people who contributed a lot.

You see, we want to autom. grant good people gifts and give other community users less power regarding that.

Hope this answers your question. ;)

Karma would work fine. It applies everywhere, even life. ;)

Fill me in, what is/was karma?

Karma is a Hindu/Buddhist concept and is like a collection of all your thoughts, actions, and words, divided up into Good and Evil. Good karma ultimately allows you to attain Nirvana. Bad karma allows you to be reincarnated as a lesser being. This would be a good concept (much more entertaining than "Points" :().

Karma is generally referred to as "good", so the higher one's Karma is, the more his chance of being reincarnated as an overall better being. Applying to the forums, status change could occur if the karma reaches a certain level, which can be analogous to reincarnation as a higher being. Also, the lower your karma, the lower your chances of being born a better being (in fact, one may end up as a pig or a snake, etc.); so, the lower your Karma, the lower your status in society (in this case, the forum community; but that status is solely based on the amount of Karma) and the fewer perks one gets to enjoy (which is true, since there's a Premium section of the site, which can be attained when one reaches Nirvana, which is the highest amount/level of Karma). ;)

One wonders what the practical difference between the Reputation and Currency systems is, what the distinction between the respective rationales of the Reputation and Currency systems is, and what warrants having both systems operating simultaneously. ;)

Yes, this is a good question, Jeru. As of now having both systems working alongside is not very clever as they are basically the same, as of yet (!). However, we set th Currency System up for future purposes such as a Forum RPG, Forum Shop and such things. It's a bit off the line to pay with "Reputation" don't you think ?
