TECHNOLOGIES

  • Infantry: Very good. Almost all technologies. Ranged units are the exception: neither here, nor there. Ranged techs average.
  • Cavalry: Mediocre to poor. Nothing to match the cavalry of the Persians, for instance.
  • Naval: Very good. Almost all technologies.
  • Siege: Good. Most technologies, though low selection of siege weapons to choose from.
  • Economy:
    • Farming: Mediocre. They should get some of the technologies, but not the most advanced ones.
    • Mining: Very good. Almost all, if not all, technologies. Coinage was highly developed.
    • Lumbering: Mediocre. Same as farming.
    • Hunting: Very limited. It was practiced mostly as a sport by the rich.
    • Land Trade: Mediocre. Definitely nothing to match that of the best civs in the area.
    • Naval Trade: Very good, one of the best in the game. Almost all techs.
    • Architecture: Above average. I would say something on the order of 80% of that of the Persians.
    • Defenses: Very good. Almost all techs.

Hi, I'm working on 3Dsmax 9 (Windows 8 64bits). I may be able to find some tutorials for you. I used mudbox only once so I can't help you on that, you don't really need it unless you have a wacom table and know exactly what you're doing. 3dsmax soft selection and paint deformations tools will do the trick.

On this forums you have the bbcode for importing images and the spoiler, try to use it, that's more convenient ;)

You could smooth the helmet, did you import the head from the assets or made your own ?

also another guy seems to be working on this here :

The Ptolemaic Agema helmet that I can only find in Enrique's reference and no where else on the internet.

My interpretation of the helmet worn on the soldier to the left of the man carrying the horn on the Nile mosaic.

  • 1 year later...

Here is my proposal for a faction that i think would be Unique, interesting, and fun to play. The Thracian tribes had a huge impact throughout history and are an interesting and varied people. They gave Rome difficulties for nearly 150 years and most of hella feared them, one historian even went so far as to say if someone united all the thracian tribes they would be the greatest Empire in the world. Now, how to implement them game wise? Well, many of the Thracian tribes south of the Danube hellenized at least partly from influences from Greek colonies, repeated forays as mercenaries, and invasions of the Greeks. So a the faction could off as another Barbarian tribe and late game they develop psuedo hellene units. Such as soldiers styled and fighting in hellenic gear and warfare. As they progress they could go form building the cheap Barbarian buildings to more hellinic buildings for key buildings as every building converting to hellinic would be OP what with the Barbarians ability to quickly assume map control with cheap buildings. To have this coupled with buildings suddenly becoming durable would push them ahead of most other factions. So only late game key buildings such as say a fortress. As for the thracian units, thracians specialized in 2 areas, horsemanship and skirmishing. The thracians are credited with inventing the Peltast style of warfare which is one of the reasons why i feel they are worthy of being included. This warfare style completely reshaped the Greek organization of warfare. So the thracians would be calvary and skirmisher heavy, focusing on quick light troops that favor hit and run tactics until late game when they unlock Hellenization. Special units would be Thracian peltast which would have higher damage, range, and do fairly well in melee combat as opposed to other similiar units. Another unique unit for them would be the Rhomphia unit. Although not a huge number of the weapons have been found , leading many to believe they were reserved for elite warriors or bodyguards of nobles, it is still considered a unique Thracian weapon. This is is al just general ideas i came up with to represent the faction and people of thraces. They were a unique and influentional people who helped contribute to the ancient world we all so adore.

All civilization needs a basic Design guide, a Marvel, Evidence of architecture for reference, evidence of fortress. Have symbol or similar , name of units. Have at last 3 heroes.

For example this is the Madonna Design Document.

Ah sorry this was in the wrong area. I mostly posted it to see if anyone thought the idea had any merit or worth to be added to the game before going forward and creating something like you showed.

If I remember correctly, I made a thracian cap for Seleucids not so long ago, it's not in the game yet though. I think the main issue is the Thrace timeframe, it's a little before 0 A.D. It could be nice for a mod though.

Where is the right foru mto post this in? And the thracian are mentioned long before 0 A.D. They were pressed int oservice during the persian invasion of greece before eventually rebelling, and their multiple contacts with greeks caused the greeks to adopt the peltast. They were influential in many of alexanders cam[aigns as light infantry and after once again rebelling were a thorn in macedons side during the Diadochi wars. They constantly raided and attacked macedon and greek settlements. One campaign went so far as to reach athens and sack the temple of Athena. So i feel they fall in the timeline and are influential enough to merit being a part of the game

Coupled with the fact of what i mentioned in my original post they could be a unique and interesting faction to paly as

I think this one might be more suitable http://www.wildfiregames.com/forum/index.php?showforum=17%C2'>

They are thracian units in the game though.

Then can be an interesting faction to play as. However you will need to find someone willing to make every buildings and units for them and that isn't likely to happen. Main team artists are working on Seleucids leaving me alone to help you. Since I'm working on Han China, Vikings, and Karlings, not sure I'll have time ^^

I always thought the thracians would be relevant, at least more than bactria. I don't believe bactria had as much an influence, as the thracian helped redifine a style of warfare with the peltast forever changing the way greeks and the hellenes fought. Alexanders hypastist often were used in the role of heavy peltast infantry as well. Sigh i wish i knew anything about modding and i'd take a crack at it but sadly i'm a total hack at it. Idk if it would be necessary to completely create new buildings for them, perhaps just slightly edit the barbarian and hellinic buildings as they were heavily influenced by both. Unit design could borrow fro mthe other factions as well. THracian warriors were typically just wearing clothing and a pelte shield until influence from greeks set in and they began wearing shinguards and helmets, particulary phyregian helmets which were based off the popular caps worn by the thracians. So as they were influenced by other factions they could have a blended feel. Which might be easier to represent by borrowing things off other units. Early thracians look more barbarian, later thracians look more hellinic. Only unique weapon specifically for them could be perhaps the rhomphia

Hi everyone. I really want to make this civilization building set, and props if it is needed but I can't seem to find any references for buildings. While I'd be fond of an iberian / greek mix for them , I'd like to have some historical backup. Cause this is what we do right.

Here are some references:

  1. http://wikivisually.com/wiki/List_of_archaeological_sites_sorted_by_country
    • We should be able to find some stuff here.
  2. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Odrysian_kingdom
    • Thracians were separate tribes, Odrysian being the biggest gathering of all I'd suggest we go for them.
  3. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thracian_Tomb_of_Kazanlak
    • Maybe could be a special monument dunno.
  4. http://www.louvre.fr/sites/default/files/dp_thraces.pdf
    • Maybe I missed something in that louvre article
  5. https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Seuthopolis
    • The somewhat official capital now underwater
  6. Thracian reference for units can be found here under "The Thracians 700 BC - AD 46.pdf"

Some quick image references for Seuthopolis, the Thracian capital under the Odrysian Kingdom. Although heavily influenced by Greece, it still had a recognizably Thracian culture and heritage. The ordinary people lived outside of the walls of this administrative center, full of official buildings.

Just an Idea:

What if, seen as the Dacians were essentially a specific type of Thracians, who eventually founded their own Dacian Kingdom, Dacian references could be fair game. This way we can represent "archaic" Thracians and the younger, reinvigorated Dacians, in a Daco-Thracian faction. First Thracian capital at Seuthopolis, and the second Dacian capital at Sarmizegetusa. Seen as they were culturally closely related, politically and geographically overlapping, and featured the same "Greco-Barbarian" architectural mix, it is possible to depict them as a single Daco-Thracian faction, referencing both, making research easier.
