Spoiler

These guys are base on 1st and 2nd century Roman Empire, the Principate era, when the emperor was considered the 'First Citizen.' It was later in the Dominate era when the emperor was considered 'Lord.' The army and architecture of this time is mostly Italic and Greek inspired, though they start to receive Eastern-style units, like Syrian Auxiliary Archers.

Summary

The Romans controlled one of the largest empires of the ancient world, stretching at its peak from southern Scotland to the Sahara Desert, and containing between 60 million and 80 million inhabitants, one quarter of the Earth's population at that time. Rome also remained one of the strongest nations on earth for almost 800 years. The Romans were the supreme builders of the ancient world, excelled at siege warfare, and had an exquisite army and navy.

Team Bonus

Client-States

  • Allies gain the protection of Rome by giving a +10% attack bonus to allied Roman units within their territory.

Civ Bonuses and Features

Testudo Formation

  • The Romans commonly used the Testudo or 'turtle' formation for defense: Legionaries were formed into hollow squares with twelve men on each side, standing so close together that their shields overlapped like fish scales.
  • Roman infantry can form a Testudo, with very great armor protection but slow speed and low defensive attack capability.

Imperial Superpower

  • Imperial Phase grants +50% Civic Center radius increase instead of the usual +25% increase for other factions.

Centurio

  • Roman Legionary Swordsmen gain an extra 4th rank, that of Centurion, with champion-level stats and abilities.

Professional Army

  • Since the Roman Empire of this age had a 100% professional army, the infantry of the Principate Romans cannot gather resources, but they can build military buildings, like defense towers, barracks, and fortresses.
  • Gathering resources is performed by Citizens and Slaves (see 'Notable Units').

Heroes

Octavian Augustus

  • The first Roman emperor, though he always pretended to 'restore the Republic' even unto his death. Octavian, or 'Augustus', put an end to 50 years of civil war and ushered in an era today we call 'Pax Romana,' or 'The Roman Peace', which lasted for over a century.
  • "Pax Romana" aura: Undecided

Titus Flavius

  • Spoiler

Titus (Latin: Titus Flavius Caesar Vespasianus Augustus; 30 December 39 – 13 September 81) was Roman Emperor from 79 to 81. A member of the Flavian dynasty, Titus succeeded his father Vespasian upon his death, thus becoming the first Roman Emperor to come to the throne after his own biological father. Prior to becoming Emperor, Titus gained renown as a military commander, serving under his father in Judaea during the First Jewish-Roman War. The campaign came to a brief halt with the death of emperor Nero in 68, launching Vespasian's bid for the imperial power during the Year of the Four Emperors. When Vespasian was declared Emperor on 1 July 69, Titus was left in charge of ending the Jewish rebellion. In 70, he besieged and captured Jerusalem, and destroyed the city and the Second Temple. For this achievement Titus was awarded a triumph: the Arch of Titus commemorates his victory to this day. Under the rule of his father, Titus gained notoriety in Rome serving as prefect of the Praetorian Guard, and for carrying on a controversial relationship with the Jewish queen Berenice. Despite concerns over his character, Titus ruled to great acclaim following the death of Vespasian in 79, and was considered a good emperor by Suetonius and other contemporary historians. As emperor, he is best known for completing the Colosseum and for his generosity in relieving the suffering caused by two disasters, the eruption of Mount Vesuvius in AD 79 and a fire in Rome in 80. After barely two years in office, Titus died of a fever on 13 September 81. He was deified by the Roman Senate and succeeded by his younger brother Domitian. (Wikipedia)

  • "Benefaction" aura: Undecided

Trajan Augustus

  • The greatest expansionist emperor of the Roman Empire. Trajan conquered the Dacians, beat back the Germans, and nearly conquered all of the Parthian Empire before having to turn back due to old age.
  • "Optimus Princeps" aura: Undecided

  • "Wild @#$%" special tech gives the Onager greater power, but reduces health for each stone throw

Notable Buildings

Triumphal Arch (Arcus Triumphalis)

http://i.imgur.com/Oka9RG2.png

  • Triumphal Arches are required in order to unlock Town Phase and City Phase technologies to expand your city.

Temple of Vesta

  • Greatly increase the capture resistance of nearby structures and health of nearby units.

Tenement (Insula)

  • The Insula (tenement) replaces the Domus (house) from the Republican era. It is larger and gives 25 population instead of 10 and has double health. Consequently, it also almost costs twice as much and takes longer to build.

Army Camp

  • Sometimes it was a temporary camp built facing the route by which the army is to march, other times a defensive or offensive (for sieges) structure. Within the Praetorian gate, which should either front the east or the enemy, the tents of the first centuries or cohorts are pitched, and the dracos (ensigns of cohorts) and other ensigns planted. The Decumane gate is directly opposite to the Praetorian in the rear of the camp, and through this the soldiers are conducted to the place appointed for punishment or execution. It has a turf wall, and it's surrounded by a canal filled with water whenever possible for extra defense. Many towns started up as bigger military camps to evolve to more complicated cities.
  • Train soldiers and siege weapons from neutral or enemy territory.

Siege Walls

  • Turf and wood walls built by legionaries during sieges. Can be built in neutral and enemy territory to strangle enemy towns.

Auxiliary Barracks

  • Train Auxiliary unit, such as Syrian Archer and Batavian Cavalry. Auxiliaries are like mercenaries (train fast, cost metal instead of food, train limit of 30), but their train limit is increase by 10 for every mercenary camp captured by the player.

Wonder

  • Amphitheatrum Flavium, aka The Colosseum.

Male slaves should probably be good at woodcutting too, TBH.

(and farming, but for balance sake i can see it being excluded)

Oh and, if you're going to have citizens be two population, it might be good to have them just be good at everything. i mean, you won't be making many of them anyway, so it won't really impact much, but having them be bad at everything that isn't building is a bit.. pointless, as you would be building with your military units.

Not only are they good at building structure, but they boost the Slaves considerably. To make them good at everything (gathering too) would not be very balanced and would dilute why you use the Citizens and Slaves. Trying to make them work this way with testing. :)

k guys. For Legionary Barracks I have these tech so far:

Training tech line

Levy Legionaries (Legionary Infantry -10% train time) -> Mobilize Legions (Faster batch training) -> Recall the Evocati (Insanely fast batch training)

Rank Promotion tech line

Decanus (Upgrade Legionarius to Advanced Rank) -> Optio (Upgrade Legionarius to Elite Rank) -> Primus Pilus (Reduce promotion to Centurion from 5 kills to 1 kill)

Legionary Infantry Health

"Aquila" Eagle Standards (Legionary Infantry +10% health)

May need help to think of some tech for Auxiliary Barracks.

I like how you implement the slave boost. you need new models for some buildings and texture the onager. And work in the aparienve of Praetorians, ( is hard debatable know how they looked)

I will texture Praetorians today. (y) They might needa new helmet (I maybe make "helmet" thread soon). I sync to Github all the new Legionary Barrack tech and Lanciarius visual improvement today.

Onager texture for now can just be a 1x1 brown color until someone unwrap and make real texture.

New buildings should be:

Colosseum Wonder

Auxiliary Barracks (or Legionary Barracks -- one can use the old barrack model and the other can use a new model)

Hadrian's Wall models for Siege Walls upgrade.

For helmets gather references and I'll see what I can do.

Same for the buildings :)

About the onager I think its unwrapped already but you could use the ao as a multiply Layer or overlay.

If you could make a record as you make the texture id really appreciate it no comments no timelapse just record. :)

That the controversy Stan, we don't know exactly what kind of helmet they used.

http://wildfiregames.com/forum/index.php?showtopic=18417&p=287391

I think this one with about 10 feathers along the top would be good. The Praetorians in the mod are cavalry.

MzV4pCl.png

Also, the Imperial Italic G helmet with feathers instead of horse crest would be good to have too:

bm-1716605401-05.JPG

(Feathers...)

helmet-3-left-web.jpg

There are other cavalry helmet that would be good to have too. I will make threads.

The type Niedermörmter is a late Weisenau type helmet, here the name-giving helmet now in the Landesmuseum Bonn

B6jmKt2.png

crossbars.

Imperial Italic H Edit

The Niedermörmter helmet, classified by Robinson as Imperial Italic H, is one of the best-preserved Roman Imperial helmets to have survived from antiquity. Made of bronze and has a neck guard which is far deeper than usual. The cross bracing across the skull is actually embossed, rather than applied, and there is a rather unusual dome-shaped knob where the braces meet at the crown of the head. This helmet is typically dated to the late Antonine or Severan eras, ca. AD 180-235, but the find context of the helmet is unknown and the dating is based solely on its typology (i.e. it looks about 4060 years down the evolutionary trail from the Italic G).

But , you need that to phase reach, :/ is too much

Must build Triumphal Arch to unlock (free) Town and City phases. Wonder unlock Imperial phase.

Could maybe make a Statue of the Emperor to unlock Town phase and Triumphal Arch to unlock City phgase.

Statue could be large bronze version of this: https://www.wikiwand.com/en/Augustus_of_Prima_Porta

  • slaves consumes too quickly the metal, and the technologies too. for some reason I have plenty all other resources but metal...

is normal the Legionaries will be superior?

are you planned translate the Mod? (I Want Promotionate into Spanish speaker)

Which units you need references?

you must include weak and cheap units (food+Wood)

the Legionaries(or mostly of military units ) can perform task like cutting wood, hunt and some mining. (was rare the Legionary that can have license for do nothing)

  • slaves consumes too quickly the metal, and the technologies too. for some reason I have plenty all other resources but metal...
    • You must be aggressive and capture more metal mines before enemy. Storehouse can be built in neutral territory, so venture out and grab the metal mines. The new Frontier Outposts tech can help here, but allowing you to put a strong tower near your forward mining operation.
  • is normal the Legionaries will be superior?
    • Ask in a different way? I don't understand.
  • are you planned translate the Mod? (I Want Promotionate into Spanish speaker)
    • Only if there are people to help.
  • Which units you need references?
    • Don't need reference for unit, just shields and helmets. You are doing good job finding reference. Maybe by end of week I'll ask for specific help making these things.
  • you must include weak and cheap units (food+Wood)
    • The Lanciarius cost food and wood.
  • the Legionaries(or mostly of military units ) can perform task like cutting wood, hunt and some mining. (was rare the Legionary that can have license for do nothing)
    • I'm trying to make the distinction between soldier and citizen more obvious for Principate Romans since at this time Rome's army was 100% professional.
