I see what you mean, but honestly, if the game acquired a model that looked like this, I wouldn't be angry in the slightest:

One of the things I like about this sculpt is her facial expression (you may disagree). To me, she kind of looks otherworldly or even psychotic in a way, with her bulgy eyes staring straight through you. Kind of like how I'd imagine a supernatural goddess of war to look. Like she could snap her fingers and murder you without giving it a 2nd thought. We are insects to her, or unfortunate collateral damage at best. She only really cares about any one individual human being when that unfortunate person pisses her off. Just an interesting interpretation of her visage.

I prefer the one here at the Royal Ontario Museum even if they did not bother trying to get the paint right the style is  a much better take on Greek Classical statues .Will give me an excuse to visit my youngest brother in Toronto:angel: and take some photos.

Enjoy the Choice :)

I just want to let you guys know that I'm already working on the "Great Bronze Athena" statue.

I'm still trying to get pose and proportions right from every angle. Once done, I'll start sculpting.

It'll probably take me some time to finish it all but we'll have a great statue at the end.

Looking good! keep it up, i'll have for blender procedural metal shaders in case you could need later fo baking.

The Great Bronze Athena

Just to be clear, there were three famous statues of Athena on the Athenian Acropolis, all of them by Phidias:

  • the Athena Promachos, a colossol bronze statue, outside, of which the tip of the spear and the crest of the helmet could be seen from Cape Sounion, according to Pausanias (1.28.2)
  • the Lemnian Athena, a statue gifted by Lemnos, his most beautiful work (ibidem)
  • the Athena Parthenos, a c. 12 m high gold-and-ivory cult statue inside the cella/naos of the Parthenon (the Nashville and Ontario versions are reconstructions of this)

Shortly afterwards Phidias also made the gold-and-ivory Statue of Zeus at Olympia, one of the Seven Wonders of the World.

Thank you.  I've collected many references including Pausanias description and images of ancient coins. At the end all this references only provide a vague understanding of how the statue looked. So I decided to use Athena Varvakeion proportions as reference for sculpting the statue, with a nike in the right hand as suggested in many coins, and an erected spear resting on her shoulder between she and the shield so the tip and the crest of the helmet could both be seen from far away. Bronze, of course, will be the main material of the statue once finished.

The Athena Varvakeion is great, a c. 1 m faithful Roman marble from the 3rd C AD, but it is a copy of the Athena Parthenos, not of the Athena Promachos. As for coins, they tend to depict the goddess, not necessarily a specific statue.

So I don't know which one you're working on, and I don't really care, any Athena statue would be great to have, but it's best to be clear from an early stage, to avoid future confusion, hence my earlier post.

Hey guys.

This is an update of my current Athena statue project. As you can see, this is not a highly detailed model yet. I've been trying to set proportions and posing right first.

Additionally, I'd like to know your opinion on having the goddess using her right hand to hold a spear instead of a nike. I personally find it more appealing with the spear. A nike would probably need an additional column to support her hand as in the Athena Varvakeion statue. As I mentioned in previous post, there's no way to know how exactly how this statue looked like. One of the few things we know is that the tip of the spear and the crest of the helmet were seen from far away. I think the concept presented in the pictures bellow would fit with this description .

In any case, It's up to you. I just want to make sure I'm in sync with what you all want.

Again, it depends on which statue you're making. The pose of the gold-and-ivory Athena Parthenos (inside) is well attested and should resemble the Varvakeion Athena, a faithful Roman copy: her right hand holding a Nikē and her left hand leisurely resting on the top of her shield.

The giant bronze Athena outside was a different statue; we don't know how it exactly looked, but it must have earned its nickname Promachos (“fighting before or in front”, i.e. a champion unprotected by the hoplite formation) for a reason. I would not just condone, but actually actively encourage to have that Athena statue firmly hold a spear in her right hand and protect her front and flank with the shield in her left.

@Nescio

Would you show me a picture that better depicts this pose you suggest? maybe something from another statue on the internet?

Again, the statue hasn't survived, nor any copies we know of for certain, so we can only guess. Fundamentally there are three broad categories (images taken from Wikimedia Commons):

  • basically Athena Parthenos with a spear:

  • a ready Athena:

    https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/2/23/Illustrerad_Verldshistoria_band_I_Ill_071.jpg

A slightly older statue from the Aphaia temple on the nearby island of Aegina, now in the Glyptothek in Munich:

    https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/c/ca/Aphaia_pediment_5_central_Glyptothek_Munich.jpg

And a partially polychrome reconstruction of the same (colours can lead to very intense debates amongst scholars):

    https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/4/49/NAMABG-Aphaia_Athena_statue.JPG

A Roman statue, now in the Vatican Museums in Rome:

    https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/2/23/Statue_Athena_Vatican_Museum.jpg

And a similar Roman statue in the National Archaeological Museum in Naples (the arm is restored):

    https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/a/ac/Museo_Archeologico_Nazionale_di_Napoli_21.jpg

  • an actively fighting Athena:
    Spoiler

    File:AGMA Athena Promachos.JPG

    https://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/1/12/Akropolis_by_Leo_von_Klenze-award-3.jpg

In the National Archaeological Museum in Naples:

While I think the third is the one most deserving the “Promachos” epithet, it's too different from other statues of Phidias. For the first it's the other way around. The second one is in my opinion the most likely, therefore I'd strongly recommend going that route.

Hi,

I'd like to use the Athena statue in DE for my mod. I traced the information of the author of the statue and found this thread. So if I understand it correctly, it was a free model from www.cadnav.com, heavily modified by @Enrique for use in Delenda Est mod by @wowgetoffyourcellphone.

Soo... where should I acquire the authorization to use this statue in my mod? Thank you.
