Crowd-sourced Civ: Mauryan Indians

This makes alot of sense considering Maurya India had one of the largest armies in the world and the second largest city next to Beijing in Han China.

Beijing did not exist on until 2nd millennium AD. Capital of China most the time before is Chang'an.

I don't think a hero would have to be violence-oriented. Heros come in many forms. I think the Celts have a hero who just increases their production rate or something.

Anyways, I came across this really cool video about elephants.

Well, Ashoka only became a pacifist because of remorse over his bloody campaign in southern India, so he could still serve as a traditional military hero, though he is most famous for his pacifist+Buddhist stage.

Nice find. I just wish we could get some reconstruction artwork. It's difficult to visualize a lot of this stuff.

I'm sorry I'm taking so long, I found a couple of pictures in our library. The thing is I lost my membership card so I have to make a new one so I can borrow the book :/ I'll be going to make it in a coupla days :)

I have access to a large library, I don't really know how to search for suitable books though. There is a search tool at http://search.lib.cam.ac.uk// and I can try and get material from anything you find on there.

I've had a quick look through using the search tool and I couldn't find anything very useful (a few books describe the Mauryans but lack visuals). I've been to a number of the larger bookshops here in London and haven't found anything useful either.

It seems like it can be hard to get loads of good information (it exists, but you really have to know how to search it and educational sites/libraries are the best bet).

I know that we have people in the forums from all over the world. Do we have people from India (or the areas of the Mauryan empire since it appears to be a little more extensive than moder India)? I wonder if they would have good access to pictures and books and if we could send them messages to solicit for help.

An artist's reconstruction of the gateway and drain at Harappa (before 0AD timeframe, but it's a reference):

Were the Mauryan archers anything in common with how strategists used English Longbowmen? During some period of time, the English took pride in their longbowmen, and an example of their efficiency would be the Battle of Agincourt. If War Elephants and chariots weren't enough for India, I bet those archers could duke some serious damage.

I have found something interesting when i read Kautilya Arthashastra: Book XI, "The Conduct of Corporations" Chapter I, Causes of Dissension: And Secret Punishment, first paragraph it is favorable to enlist the help from these corporations while second paragraph where it mentioned the corporation of warriors (Kshatthriyasreni) which consists of people of Kambhojas, Surashtra or Sourashtra and other ethnics from other regions of India which suggested Mauryan Empire employed these mercenaries as regulars soldiers. Historically, Kambhojas are a branch of Indo Iranian people and their superior horsemanship have made them among the trusted corporation warriors (Kshatthriyasreni) in Mauryan Empire. Several Hindu Epic from Vedic, Ramayana, Mahabharata and other sources suggested their existence earlier than Mauryan period. Maybe we could have Elephant Stables as one of the special buildings since the Maurya were known for their elephants.

Like this one, although this one was built a thousand years later.

I would be very surprised if we didn't include Elephant Stables.

Caves cut around the time of the Maurya have similar arched entrance doors, so our Mauryan buildings could do too.

We could just make the regular stables building be the elephant stables building and have it train both elephant cavalry and regular cavalry.

Also, maybe we could include some kind of a Vedic (early Hindu) altar as a unique building. Here are some photos:

Some of those images are later altars, but they just give you a sense of the structure of the building... maybe it could be about the size of the Iberian "revered monument."
