Alpha 8 name ideas?

it seems the next civilization that will be introduced is the persian, so my suggestions are:

  1. Haxâmanishiya: old Persian for Achaemenid, known as the first Persian Empire, expanding to eventually rule over significant portions of the ancient world which at around 500 BCE stretched from the Indus Valley in the east, to Thrace and Macedon on the northeastern border of Greece . The Achaemenid Empire would eventually control Egypt, encompassing some 1,000,000 square miles (2,600,000 km2) unified by a complex network of roads and, ruled by monarchs, to become the greatest empire the world had yet seen. (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Achaemenid_Empire)
  2. Hagmatana: old Persian name of Ecbatana, one of the most important cities of the persian empire (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Ecbatana, http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Hamadan)

Alpha 8 should be a celebration of Ancient Persia. It would be such a pity to ruin that with the name of a Greek historian who hated them.

Some original Old Persian names whose English rendering may start with H are Haxāmaniš/Hakhamanish (Achamenes, founder of the Achaemenid dynasty) and Ḫšayāršā/Khshayarsha (Xerxes I).

But I'm thinking about Hystaspes, which is the Hellenized name of Darius the Great's dad.

Herodotus.

+1. With the addition of the Persians there cannot be a better one.

Edit:

Well obviously to us as Western historians the Greco-Persian wars is the first thing to come our minds when we talk about the Persians, and he is our main source for that, so... he is obviously the most significant name for us in that context.

as awesome a name as Herodotus is, i put my vote forward for Hagmatana; there's simply too many greco-roman names already, we should focus on the other civs as much as we can, especially since alpha8 will (presumably) include the persians

ive made this suggestion before, but i think that, if we completely cycle through all the letters of the english alphabet for alpha names, then we should start again at A and work our way through it once more. we can save Herodotus for Alpha 34 :)

Haxāmaniš , the legendary founder of the Achaemenid Dynasty, the greatest persian dynasty and one of the most important old empires.

Good one! My favourite suggestion so far (even over Herodotus) :).

Edit: Found some good historic articles on him:

How about Hagmatāna ? The name fits with the Persian theme too.

Hagmatāna is old Persian for the city of Ecbatana, which literally means "the place of gathering", believed to be the capital of the Median Empire taken by the Persian emperor Cyrus the Great during his revolt. Cyrus along with Harpagus led his armies against the Medes in many battles until it's capture in 549 BC from Astyages, effectively conquering the Median Empire. Under the rule of Darius the Great, the city was greatly expanded and served as the summer capital for the empire. This is also the place where Bessus, the (unofficial) last king of the Persian Empire was killed for his murder of Darius III.

Edit: I've noticed that ribez has suggested it earlier, oh well. ;)

"The Persian armies, as many contemporary armies (but not the Greeks), were organized according to a decimal system, by 10, 100 or 1000. An officer being responsible for every subdivision:

Number-name of the unity(unit) and title of the officer

10 000 - baivarabam-Baivarapatis 1 000-hazarabam - Hazarapatis 100--satabam Satapatis 10--dathabam Dathapatis"

Source : http://lemondeantique.forumactif.com/t490-l-armee-perse

So Hazarapatis could be a good name for Alpha 8.

I like Herodotus, seems to fit the theme that is already there.

i don't know man, but i think that herodotus is very.... clasic.

Yeah, he is the father of the history and registered Greco-Persian Wars, but the main theme should be the persian civilization.

So Haxāmaniš sounds..... exotic, really exotic : )

PD: I hope than the alpha 8 will be our christmass gift
