Shadow Rendering

Recommended Posts

How hard would it be to get shadows like these? I really like them a lot, as they seem more realistic than our current shadows. I seem to recall Philip saying that this is a bug, but it would be great to have them coupled with the ability to control the softness :) Of course this is not a priority, just a reminder so we don't forget :)

I hope it's not the raster effect you're after ;)

Just kidding. It would be nice to have softer shadows eventually, it's probably better to wait with implementing something like that until the gameplay code is done though, the shadows are nice enough as it is. (That doesn't mean that I'm saying that someone who'd like to implement soft shadows shouldn't bother unless everything else is done, just that if the person in question chooses between doing some gameplay related code and doing soft shadows the former should win :) )

why? :D

i prefer this new UI, because it leaves free the bottom center of the screen...

when we can see it in the game?

:P That's the old GUI.

the current position of Stances seems out of place

Current position is not final :) As with the idle worker button it needs to be integrated in the GUI, but currently it's mostly put in so it can be tested (also the person developing the feature/s is not necessarily the person with knowledge of the GUI, so sometimes that explains things as well :) ).

 really?

well, i'm not talking about aestethics, but i think the old GUI is less obtrusive. Playing with a resolution of 1366x768, the bottom center is occupied by the GUI too much IMHO

Do you have a guideline for the GUI? If possible, i would like to take a look to it

Here we go. Because one guy likes the old UI we'll have to have a giant staff meeting about how the current UI fails us. ;)

That's because it doesn't really show any buttons or information - it's easy to make the design unobtrusive when you omit necessary features from it :P. (If you want to see it in the game you'd have to go to SVN r7258, I think, before the simulation rewrite was merged (since the GUI implementation was incompatible with that).)

sorry if i appeared too rude .

I'm sure you have good reasons to swap to the new UI, this is why i've asked to see the guideline :D

i'm a sort of UI maniac, used to games like Civilization and Europa Universalis franchises :P

i'm sure the new UI offers more info, but i think some things could remain hidden, for example all the buildings a unit can build: IMHO this panel could be showed only after you press a build button

PS i'm sorry i'm going off-topic

Hmm, I don't agree. Why put an extra step? Just one more click than necessary. The panel disappears when you don't have anything selected anyway.

well, also for stances you need an extra click to activate a new stance.

The difference is that most of the time you don't need to build anything, and in battle, for example, you have always units selected and the building panel (that is quite big) hides the field of battle.

Instead stances need to be swapped quickly in battle, so i think should be activated with a single click, maybe graying out not active stances ;)

Hmm, I'd say you need to build more often than change stances. However, you may have a point that you might want/need to change stances quickly, while if it takes slightly longer to build a building it might not be a big deal. I'd say you'd be most likely want to use hotkeys if you are keen on speed, in which case which action is most easily accessible via GUI might not make much difference.

I really do like the new UI... current looks like a rip off of AOE2 if i remember correctly... New one looks unique :P

For the last time, it's an old one, from like 4 years ago. :P Our current UI may take some cues from the AOK UI, but that's because AOK's UI was very good. :) The old round UI was not very extensible and had elements strewn all over the place. :)

I thought the AoE UI was decent, but not amazing. It requires too much mouse movement up and down the screen. I wonder if something could be implemented, where the options (generally build/spawn) appeared over the unit if you held Alt down. That would save a lot of space. I think the UI takes up a bit too much space at the moment.

P.S. 0A.D.'s home screen currently doesn't fill my screen and the mouse sensitivity before starting a game is extremely sluggish. It picks up while a game is on, but I don't know why that should be.
