  1. Although I realize, that removal of Taliban from government was needed, I don't believe in ultimate victory here.

Mujaheddin will take his half of bread and two magazines to AK and disappears in mountains.

Americans got into same position as Russians. Both conquered Afghanistan quickly, and both suffer from prolonged fighting with enemy, which can't be caught and thus eventually defeated.

This campaign can last 20 years and it will draw too much energy.

  2. C# is ok its just that C++ has been used more if you know what I mean so I understand why you guys don't like it.

    No. There are other reasons.

.NET is IIRC youger than 0AD, so it would bee needed to rewrite whole game.

I don't know about .NET implementation of OpenGL.

.NET is proprietary MS tech (no, Mono isn't full implementation) and thus no Linux, no MAC etc.

.NET is somewhat less effective, so better CPU and more RAM would be needed.

    And there are maybe others.

  3. Uhmmm, the revolting stuff was my idea (y) , belisarivs, not brightgalrs´

Nobody says otherwise. But you accepted arguments against it.

For Allah, guys, how can you start a drama only because of a sugestion posted by a n00b (me)?? The economic crisis unnerves ya or what?

You aren't noob. You are welcomed member of community around 0AD.

  4. And when the person in question has got moderator privileges it can be dangerous too

Would be an abuse of power... wouldn't it?

And isn't your insult abuse of anonymity?

He doesn't only have moderator privileges. As he is one of leading persons of 0AD, and thus you should want to make him agree with you and this is always made by polite and constructive discussion.

You have failed to control your emotions and insulted him in public. Now you should show that you are grown up enough to realize your fault and apologize.

Then we can start to discuss it again. But don't expect it to be implemented sooner than in Part II. As it was already mentioned, team lacks menpower. What do you prefer? Perfect game which is never released or less perfect game which is released and can be later extended by addons?

Unfortunately, feature you request adds another micromanagement which is distracting and more suitable for turn-based rather than RTS. RTS can be pretty fast and you can be done in 30 minutes.

Imagine, you have 2 heroes and you are attacked. What would you do? Keep them in provinces or take them into battle to defend from blow which might be lethal? Heroes are supposed to boost skills of your units. So you most probably will keep them in heat of battle rather than keeping them in any province you conquer.

And building theatre? Is it really enough to subdue nation? I don't think so.

  5. Oh, allright, except for:

    The Sims (y)(y) ?? WTF ;) ?? I was talking about a more Total War feature :o

You can't implement Total War features into RTS. You'd definitely turn it towards The Sims variation (well, I took it perhaps too much to the extreme, but I just wanted to point out how it could end up). I, among other people, hope, that Part II will bring in Total War style into 0AD, but for RTS it would make it too complex.

  6. Bwahahahaaa! Your minor companies shall fall to the extreme domination of Microsoft! XP rules! Literally!

    Says who?

I'm too honourable and posses too much knowledge about what has MS done to defend such company.

BTW, could you please avoid flamebaits such as this next time?

  7. Why not (y) ??

Additional work -> Delay of release

Also, tis is AoK style game with emphasis on warfare. I don't want 0AD to end up as The Sims variation.

I'm interested in military, less I have to care about peasants, the better. I mean, there, of course, is need to manage economy, but I find that in AoK satisfactory.

  8. May I suggest you something then?

You do it wrong way. If you already have nice work, you should advertise it. Tease future players/modders/whatever.

This must draw attention of many people. Remember, strong community is must. Also, keep in mind that this can mean also mode menpower for your work as some people from community will gladly help you.

Now it seems to me, that you are almost hiding screens. Not that you do it, but personally, I'd put any picture at main page so any random visitor comes and sees that cool work, is attracted and perhaps can even offer help.

It doesn't mean any additional work and should have no negative side effects.

  9. Hi.

As I know, that WFG started as AoK modders and I think, that there arealso many people who played AoK and there can be found some people who made AI scripts for it, I'd like to ask you for help.

Modification of AoK - Age of Chivalry (AoC) did so many changes to tech tree and units composition, that AI included in game and also AIs for AoK aren't able to deal with it very well.

I was able to fix some AI to make it progress to second age, but that is all so far.

AI doesn't use new techs and as composition of units also changed it isn't as effective.

I can try to learn scripting (well, I will do it if nobody will volunteer for help), but asking people, who have made some great pieces of work and thus will most probably have better results is IMHO also good idea.

Now I'm gathering people willing to do/modify some AI scripts. List of new techs and units (and buildings as well) and their availability to certain factions is almost done. And will be available soon.

Age of Chivalry focuses on warfare in Western and Central Europe.

There are civs like Genoese, French, Welsh, Scottish, Bohemians, Friesland and others.

Also, every faction will have to do policy decision. Every faction has 2 policy decisions technology. Only one can be chosen.

Policy decision can just mean that one or another upgrade is applied or can mean whole change of tactics and strategy.

For example playing as Scottish, you can prefer strengthening Gallic roots, which benefits your native troops, or Norman influence which will benefit your knights.

But playing as Bohemians, by joining Hussite rebellion, you will have famous War Wagons, better archery, light infantry and archery. But joining Luxembourgs will allow you to train Imperial and Royal Knights. But at the cost of weaker light troops.

Also, every civ will have own hero. It is unit with much better stats than other units, but it needs 100 kills (unfortunately, there is no option to prevent more heroes to be trained).

So, playing as Hussite you have hero Jan Zizka (one of the best commanders of Middleages), other Luxembourgs have king Charles IV (founder first university in central Europe, founder of Monte Carlo builder of Charles bridge, Karlstejn and many others).

Mod also adds new graphics and new techs.

More info can be found here:

For those who loved AoK it is a must. Believe me.

However, weak AI hurts gameplay in Standard game. But you can try campaign which consists of several scenarios depicting famous battles like Bannockburn or Wars of the Roses.

Also starting standard game with higher resources (or death match) and higher difficulty helps.

But AI will not research new techs and will be confused with some civs.

Enjoy and if you want, your help will be appreciated.

EDIT: I forgot to mention download site.

  10. Imagine that you are one of developers of 0AD.

You have vacation, you want rest, enjoy some pub visits with friends and probably you also have to study because exams at uni are approaching. And of course there is non profit project which takes lot of your time for several years but gives nothing back except gained skills which may be useful once.

    Which activity you'd choose first?

Actually, not many volunteer projects of such size get so far.

Only few old community members are still active.

Requests for another pictures don't motivate guys about 0AD. But displaying support and appreciation does.

We can be happy for devs work, really like it, but we definitely can't make any requests.

Not that we would be punished, but because it is morally unacceptable.

I know that you didn't want to hurt anyone or so, but please keep this in mind.

There is progress being done. Once faster, once slower, but continual.

That is more than we can ask.

  11. I don't understand what you are trying to say.

I guess what I mean by all this is that it's quite unfair to call the Indians naked men with clubs and spears, when they had complex societies, massive cities, powerful governments and advanced philosophy and mathematics. And they obviously wore clothes. (y)

I never called them naked men with clubs and spears. I know about their advanced medicine, architecture and society.

I was speaking clearly about military which was no match to that of European armies.

No metal, no horses, no wheel, no gunpowder, no navy.

If there was battle to happen between Spanish and Indians in open field in 1 : 1 in numbers, would you bet your money on Indians? I wouldn't at all.

Yes, Indians could have some bought or captured guns or other equipment, but that was all.

  12. The Aztecs are hardly a good example. When Cortes arrived, they believed him to be their god Quetzalcoatl, and when the King Moctezuma invited them into his city, they took him hostage. Later, the Aztec nobles led a rebellion and drove the Spanish out of Tenochtitlan. The Spanish lost more than 600 of their men.

La Noche Triste? In fact, it was supposed to kill them all. Fact, that they could escape means something.

Also, loss of 600 men meant significant loss. Such casualty is nothing worth mentioning for Aztecs.

They then found refuge with their allies, the Tlaxcala. The Aztecs then attempted to drive the Spanish out once and for all but they were defeated.

Yes. Artillery and gunpowder guns did work. As well as metal weapons.

He then told the Tlaxcala that is they defeated the Aztecs, they could have Tenochtitlan, which was a lie. They then advanced and took over all the Aztec cities except Tenochtitlan. When they attacked though, the city was going through a smallpox epidemic, which had killed hundreds of thousands. One third of the residents died in under 6 months. The Spanish also had ships armed with cannons firing at the city and thousands of Tlaxcalan warriors. The last Aztec king finally surrendered.

The idea that a few Spanish soldiers walked in and slaughtered the Aztecs is simply untrue and ignorant.

OK. Epidemies did kill many people. However Spanish military was still superior to that of natives. And many battles proven it.

  13. Hey Belisarivs,lI was missing you here dude!Do you wanna help us here?

    Hi.

I was still there. Less active hough. My studies ended. I'm now employed by Novell and working on SuSE Linux.

My collegue is one of the 5 most important persons in KDE development.

EDIT:The aztecs arent a real example of a strong native american civ (Outdated weapons and their need to capture enemies instead of killing them were weak points of their military),but the iroquois, the mapuches and even the incas certanly gave some trouble to the europeans.

Aztecs killed their enemies. Sooner or later. In fact, when Spanish arrived, they just were in progress of great conquest. And this can't happen when you are weak. They just didn't know metal.

I wanted to point out, that Indians didn't reach technological level comparable to Europeans. They weren't able to make own guns or cannons. They had to buy or capture it. And this is quite uncertain source of weapons

You'll have to make them more powerful than they really were or give them superior numbers (which is more correct).

If they managed to win, it was never against numerically superior Europeans. While Europeans achieved many such victories.

Also, Indians could use native territory to their advantage. But how do you want to implement this?

AoE3 Warchiefs were imho terrible. I don't believe that indians had cannons worth mentioning.

EDIT2:Blablahead,the ottomans never had colonies, but they raided the north american coast in the XVII Century

Never knew about it. Could you provide some links?

  14. Exactly. An army of highly trained, elite European troops could probably defeat most Indians very easily, however the soldiers who were fighting them weren't elite troops, but colonists and militia for the most part.

    Sorry?

I don't really believe, that Spanish Conquistadors, who swept away Indians even though they were small in numbers were just militia.

And if so, that would mean that Indians were really weak.

Also, leaving Native Americans out of a Colonial mod would be like leaving Rome out of 0 AD. (y)

I think, that making Indians as trainable local Auxiliary troops would be sufficient.

  15. PS: Belisarius, I would point out how wrong you are about the Indians, but Abadu already did it. I think that to leave them out of this mod would be silly, and I don't really like the way they did it in AoE3, but it's better than nothing.

Actually, although I don't like AoE3 much, I find depicting of natives here as quite accurate if you mean those trainable local auxiliary troops.

PPS: Why would a Iroquois warrior, for example, or a Cree warrior armed with a musket be any less effective than a British or French soldier armed with the same weapon?

Regular infantry is always better than irregulars. They receive proper training, have higher discipline and morale.

Military training is not only about aiming gun at enemy and pressing trigger.

The only disadvantage of colonial armies was small number of soldiers who could still inflict terrible casualties to overwhelming force of native indians.

How do you represent this? Will you gice indians pop limit 200 and to Spanish 50? Or will you make missballancing tweaks like those in Aztecs in AoK?

No. I don't really believe, that aztec could defeat European heavy infantry so easily.

Aztecs were starting to be beaten by Tarascans (or Tlaxcalans) who revealed how to make copper weapons.

Which was technology known for Centuries in Old World.
