Not all publishers like to have their book content retelled. I think the city library would be the best option for non-copyrighted content. Although the laws of many countries allow you to quote the text for informational purposes.

    https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tadeusz_Stefan_Zieliński

He has excellent books on Rome, Macedonia, the Ptolemies, the Seleucids, Epirus and Syracuse (probably). But it was hardly published in English...

Publishers don't own the information. So if we use multiple sources and don't copy and paste it word for word, we'll be good.

I was planning on writing from memory stuff about Spartans.

Another thought was that we should use first-hand sources like Plutarch or Herodotus.

There are some rules here: https://trac.wildfiregames.com/wiki/EnglishStyleGuide

You can use the files from here https://trac.wildfiregames.com/changeset/19960

I'll add the style guide to the repo.

  2. I added fish.

Another thing we should say is please just don't copy off Wikipedia. You can use Wikipedia for some of your sources but try not to just copy word for word. Use the report lessons you learned in school.

Also I'm writing without talking about modern time. I think we should make that a style rule.

Also another rule should be unbiased history (but I don't think that'll be a problem)

If no one object's I'll put those rules in a RULES file in the repository.

Also I make a move we start on a single civilization write all their unit's  out so their entries can somewhat build on each other (but also be stand alone)

I think we should start with Sparta.

    @wowgetoffyourcellphone

I heard you were part of the dev team a while ago. Do you have any secret forum history research for the units that we could use to jump-start our research?

While I agree that wikipedia is not a prime source, I think it will be ok for general stuff. But for example the role of specific units might be controversial.

I hope this endeavor catches the attention of our historians and that they will contribute accordingly. ^^

Me too. In fact I'd love the historians and other people to start PRing. I'll add the fish to the mod.

  4. I am also not a big fan of Wikipedia. It's OK for a general precursory search or even for looking up the details of a game. However, there have been some people who write there are biased against certain things. With history can't be always trusted, It shouldn't be discounted offhand, but a second or third source would be welcome.

I've only had problems with Wikipedia when it comes to politics or ancient history stuff relating to the Bible, I am sort of willing to trust it with fish.

  5. So I'm starting it easy with the fish.

    Tuna:

Tuna are fish that belong to the tribe Thunnini. They live in warm saltwater and have sizes ranging from 1.6 feet to 15 feet. They are one of the few species of fish that can regulate their own temperature.

Sources:  Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tuna and Encyclopedia Brittanica : https://www.britannica.com/animal/tuna-fish

    Tilaphia:

Tilapia is the common name for almost a hundred species of freshwater fish. Who were fished everywhere, from the Nile to the Sea of Galilee.

    Sources: Wikipedia: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Tilapia

    The "Generic Fish" was harder:

Fish has always been a good way to gather food. Not only are fish healthy, but they are abundant in most large bodies of water.

    Sources: My head.

If no one has any concerns, I'll comment these changes to the repository as soon as I can.

  6. So I got the tags working a bit. You have to add in the <Identity> Tag the sub items <History><\History> and then it'll pop up.

So, should we lay out a few rules like unbiased view on history, and so on?

I'm assuming we'll write it in en_US because I don't know any other language. I do think we should use LanguageTool to help catch typos.

Also, where will we put the writing in a mod first? Or is there a better way?

  7. Ok. I guess we'll just have to make it.

First, I think it goes without saying that we're trying to only do a few paragraphs for each unit, make them unbiased and historically accurate. I don't think we need to cite sources, however.

I found out the tag we need is inside the identity tag set and is <History></History> Thanks to @wowgetoffyourcellphonefor that.

So should we make this a mod first or just try to put it in the code? I also think we should write it for en_US and use LanguageTool to help, and then the translators can change it.

Yeah you can restore the <history> tag in the identity components. It will then show up in the detailed view of the unit.

Um. I tried to add a tag to the spartan women, and it wouldn't pop up. Is there a bit more nuance. Is it <History> not <history>? Or do you have to put it in the identity sub-section?

Once I get something to show for it, I might make a github repository and a forum discussion for adding history text. At first, it'd be a mod, but obviously It'd be cool to have it in with the main game.

However, for a discussion I have no idea what category to put it in. it's not gameplay, and it is technically only a mod until it can be added to the main game.

  9. To get a mod on mod.io I have to get approved.

Once that's done, anyone can test it by installing it through the 0 A.D. mod launcher

    Secret forums?!? That's pretty cool...

I've been reading up on Greek and Hellenistic cultures, so I already know some of the history/ culture and I can always look stuff up.

Maybe there should be a different discussion about writing unit encyclopedias? I mean, assuming that's a feature that the developers want.

  10. I want it to be for the main game. I'm using the mod to make it easier for people to test it. I'll put it in the general forum as soon as it's approved.

So would anyone know where the original historical discussions for the more stable factions (Greece/ Briton etc.)?

  11. So I posted the mod to mod.io I'm waiting for it to be approved, and then I'll open a forum post to discuss it.

Should I put the discussion in Gameplay Discussion or Modding? I mean, it relates to gameplay and really isn't that big of modding.

Raw research like that is probably the easiest, but not for civilizations that are in development.

It wouldn't be too hard, unit description wise. When you get to civilizations, you'd just need an overview with just enough information. The upgrades would be easy because a lot of them are used across units. Descriptions would be a pain for translators, however.

  12. Quote

    Age of Empires saga.

Not really. I played Age of Empires 3, and Age of mythology a couple of times, but I don't really care if age of empires has something or not.

I just want to know what everything is without ordering 10 books from the library and scrolling through 15 pages of blocked college papers to find out cool history stuff.

Sure. Keep in mind that most people are not tech friendly, so ideally you should provide it as a pyromod. See the relevant documentation here: https://trac.wildfiregames.com/#Formodders:

I'll skip the github and just put it on mod.io it doesn't look too hard.
