  1. Mao didn't think that cities should be the first objective (but as I understand, this war is different).

A question; all conspiracies and greed aside, does anyone know what is the short time-objectives are? I'd like to know, because it seems to me that the army went in, intending to crush Saddam's forces and install democracy. That half-failed and now it's like the soldiers aren't doing much except get shot at. What can they do?

I know the long-term mission: peace. but how can that be achieved? Are they working the same way as in Afghanistan (I can't see that being the case)? It just puzzles me so.

I know it's a civil war now, but what can a foreign military do about it know? Perhaps the militaries should be pulled out, and UN peacekeepers go in (with permission of the Iraqi gov't of course).

  2. There is no "slamming." If they wanted to slam, they could probably easily run over some of the smaller cars. They slow down and tap, and the people move over.

And securing cities is the only actual action in a desert area, in reality. You can't just ignore cities, natural bases of armed resistance, because people will be in your way when you try to drive. Another reality is that you can't avoid traffic, unless you want to shut down half the city, a worse offense than making people get out of your way by bumping the back of their cars.

Mao didn't think that cities should be the first objective (but as I understand, this war is different).

Anyway, like I said, I can understand the military perspective and the civilian perspective. If a hummer "tapped" your vehicle, would you describe it as a tap? If someone did it to me, they'd be arrested, but I don't live in a war zone, thank God.

Civilian support is not very high, so they probably don't car about the hummer, until it taps them. I'd be the same. I think helicopters should be the main source of transport, but they can be expensive.

It's too bad that they're even over there. If the had to be anywhere, it should've been Afghanistan, not Iraq.

  3. Oi. This title's spelling is getting on my nerves. Not to be picky over internet-speak, but it's annoying when it's so blatantly obvious to a poor speller such as myself.

Finnished makes me think about someone being finished with speaking Finnish. (y)

Oh well, perhaps I am being to picky, but it wouldn't be so bad if the word wasn't so close to another word. :)

  4. "We'll do this the old navy way; first guy to die - looses!" Lloyd Bridges - Hot Shots! Part Deux

    "Die for glory"

"We're the knights of the round table, we dance wen're we're able, we do routines and chorus scenes..."

"I'll remember your ip." In the voice of a gang member (you know what I mean) When they tell a cop they've got their badge #

  5. Now as far as vista is concerened, if u do get it, get at least 3gb of memory. That way u will run smoothly.

Yeah, I was at a computer store, and the sales rep was pointing out laptops I should stay away from. He said that when Vista came out, all the older laptops immediately upgraded to it, but don't really have a decent amount of power to run Vista and other programmes at the same time. (y)

I know a laptop is a poor choice for gaming, but I don't need a powerhouse. As a student, my funds aren't high, so I think I'll try to get a laptop that is moderately powerful so I can play games. I don't really want to stick with just a laptop, but I don't think I could afford a PC right now. :)

  6. The other day I got my Ubuntu and Kubuntu disks I ordered several months ago. :) Now I just need something to install it on...

Yeah, I've heard bad things about Vista as well. Not a surprise really, good for people who just want a easy to use computer, but bad for those who want to do things, uh, under the radar. (y)

  7. If we went to space, for colonization purposes, we would do much less polluting then we do on Earth for one simple fact: if you creat pollution, then you are loosing something. If you put a settlement on, say, Mars, then you don't want to have to be brining all kinds of basic foodstuffs and alike just to keep them going. They would have to recycle everything just to keep semi-self sufficient. I'm all for small colonies, mostly as a back up system. If humans destroy the planet ( whether through war, pollution, something crazy involving robots taking over and the last human detonating all the nukes) then we would still have a "Noa's Ark" of sorts. We should creat some sort of "self-sufficiency experimental colony" on Mars, with a farm and trees and what not, just to see if it is possible.

As for right now, many people don't want to change, or can't (rain forest being clear-cut, cars idling in gridlock, etc) and that is why we might not make it. It will be tight. We should start collecting DNA samples of all the organisms of the world to create a Titan A.E. style!

  8. How about this:

Modern famous buildings (eg. CN Tower, Eiffel Tower, Sydney Opera House, Empire State Building, etc.) redesigned as anchient buildings in the style of different civilizations.

i.e. Roman style Empire State Building.

This would take some thought and designing, but it'd be cool. If you ever want to take a break from the usual, this could be interesting.

  9. Well, I need a laptop for school (University) and I'm pretty sure it's going to be a laptop. I don't know, however, if it should be a tablet or not. Tablets cost an extra grand, usually, but would be good for someone who isn't the fastest typer in the world. It would also be handy for mathematics. However they are also known to be slower than a regular laptop.

Basically I want something to handle the basics; docs, videos, music; but also to be able to handle games.

Currently I just have my family computer from 1997, with Win95, and all I can play is AoE/II, Doom/2, Duke Nukem 3D etc.

Also, is there a Linux that might run on a decade old computer?

Please help me solve my conundrum!

  10. Okay, so I am a guy who has little programming experience, just some HTML and a little Java, and few Photoshop skills and no 3d experience.

My question: should I learn Blender? I was recently advised to it, and I discovered there is lots of help availible (Wikibooks etc). I think I'll try it, but I was wondering, on a scale of 1 to 10 (one being the lowest) how hard is Blender to someone as inexperienced as me? :(
