  1. Based on this screenshot I assume that 1 tile equals 1.5m:

I came across the wireframe mode in Atlas and I was wondering about the purpose of the grid lines. I noticed this in AOE2. Are they related to pathfinding or mainly for map organization and structure proportions?

And the map sizes are defined in map_sizes.json. So we would get:

    • Tiny: 192m
    • Small: 288m
    • Normal: 384m
    • Medium: 480m
    • Large: 576m
    • Very Large: 672m
    • Giant: 768m
  2. Hey @josuebrown,

I recommend finding a suitable model for areas/aspects of life, trying to find out where your deficits are, where your curiosity is and what you are yearning for in your inmost being. If you find yourself too much distracted or absorbed by the daily duties, first create space, time and silence for reflection/contemplation, this is where clear thoughts get the chance to thrive. If you do not know how, take a first little step. Find someone who can help you, read, ask, search... Maybe you just need smaller adjustments, maybe bigger ones including a complete life change (in this case I recommend taking a break for several months if possible, e.g. for travelling, reading, socializing).

classic model example: body, mind, soul
I would divide this further, e.g.

    • body: health, nutrition, intimacy, exercise
I recommend lots of low intensity integrated into daily life like walking, cycling, hiking, ... with short bursts of high/max intensity, instead of running 30/45/60 min the same pace (this is not what our ancestors did). I further recommend bodyweight exercises instead of insulated weight lifting. Nutrition: less sugar, less "bad fat" (like in fast food), less processed food, less meat, more vegetables, more "good fat" (omega 3), more seeds/nuts and whole grain.
    • mind: reading, discussing, discovering interesting theories/ideas
    • soul: being in nature, listening to music, reading, being creative (arts, music, writing, ...), if you're introvert (= gaining energy alone) focus more on meditation/contemplation/prayer, if you're extrovert (= gaining energy in community) focus more on shared activities

It can feel quite overwhelming having a huge list, thats why I try to find activities that encompass all fields. E.g. I like hiking and mountaineering. This requires my body (can be tuned from low to insane intensity), my mind (planning routes analyzing weather, terrain, overnight stay possiblities, ...; analyzing/discovering/buying/replacing equipment) and my soul (I can contemplate, I feel temporarily displaced to another world leaving everything else in the valley, when I am solo walking/climbing on an arête, I can get into complete flow mode, ...)

another, more specific model example: job, family/partnership, health, social contacts, individuality/hobbies, belief/spirituality
This model has been developed by Dr. med. Mirriam Prieß, a German physician, psychotherapist, business consultant, coach and author specialized in the field of burnout.
Her experience and thesis is that burnout (and related issues like depression) is not primarily caused by too much workload, but by defunct relationships, both outwards to other people (either non existent or conflicts) and inwards (not listening to yourself, no connection to your "inner voice"). Basically not doing/living what you are intrinsically supposed/designed to do.

What I find especially helpful: Try to determine where you have gotten into "flow" mode, this sweet spot between boredom and overextension where you forgot everything else around you including space and time. Try to remember what you wished/dreamed when you where a still a kid. This helps to circumvent blockades/restrictions our "adult" mind imposes on us (as kids we were more directly expressing what we wanted without analyzing external circumstances that much).

I hope I could provide some inspiration... :) Good luck!

EDIT: Do not forget to love (and forgive!) yourself. You cannot change the past, but you can influence which person you'll be in the future. And "begin with the end in mind" (one of the "7 habits of highly effective people" by Stephen Covey)...

Yep. Usages of the money are a bit complicated though due to the non profit nature of our sponsor.  We might comission some artist in the future to do stuff. Currently there aren't many artists active.

Is there an official sponsor? I thought the money had been completely raised by donations...

And are there any major plans for specific fields of development? It seems to me that the Art department has been quite strong compared to some programming areas e.g. AI

Pathfinding is mostly good now with the threading. Problem is the JS code. Bottleneck seems to be the attack part now.

Thank you for clarifying :) I was aware that there was a multithreading patch lying around and and least parts of it got committed, however I don't know how optimized the current solution is, i.e. if there is approximately equal load on all CPU cores, if it is scalable to a huge number of cores, if its efficient (double number of used cores -> close to double performance or just a small increase) etc. In any case, the progress sounds promising...

I think it would not help to push the game to the public.

I think games that are popular result in high prizepool tournament. I don't see it automatically working the other way around.

If anything yeah that might bring more frustration because of the lag / bugs

    and this.

    • optimize engine, pathfinding, networking, ...
-> reduce lag, create a fluid game
    • polish GUI (feels a bit outdated), especially ingame
      -> create immersion (1)
    • add content like more tutorials, challenges and campaigns with original art and good storytelling
      -> create immersion (2)
    • most importantly OVERHAUL GAMEPLAY
      -> strategic depth and variety
-> add to the longevity of the game, so you will still need to learn and adapt after 100s of hours
    • find ways to make the lobby a (user-)friendly place; make it more appealing graphic wise, it has a very techy vibe
-> less complaints about toxicity and cheating
-> overall more welcoming to beginners

    When the groundwork is done...

...after years of heavy work, drastic changes, thorough testing, maybe also some luck...

...then we can talk about steam support, prized tournaments etc. IMO :)

I do not want to stop you from having fun, but just want to say this is not thinking big...

I am interested, but I used the content of  @Palaxin, so I think if he also agrees then it can be added.

I agree :D Thanks for finishing my work!

Suggestion for polishing the map with some hand editing in Atlas:

    • make texture distribution more natural
      • less sand in Brittany, north western France, Poland and Balkan
      • more sand in northern Africa / Sahara
      • replace full snow in the Atlas mountains with rocky/snowy mixture (there are no real glaciers in the Atlas mountains like in the Alps)
    • break up repetitive texture patterns by replacing uniform texture areas with a combination of 2-3 different textures
      • Atlas mountains
      • plains of Spain, middle and eastern Europe
    • adjust shoreline at some critical areas according to real world maps:
      • eradicate lakes in northern Africa and in Brittany
      • a bit more land in northern Italy (Venice area) / make north western Adriatic Sea a bit smaller
      • a bit more land in eastern Brittany
      • some fine tuning of the western and northern French coast, and Belgium/Netherlands/Germany coastline
    • add more flora and fauna apart from the woods
    • maybe add treasures and/or special objects like stone quarries (the new ones features in Delenda Est)

Maybe @Stan` can split the political part into a new thread in the offtopic section?

I always say that profanity-phobics make profanity necessary.  As long as there are people offended by it, there will be a need for people to provide the required offenses.

The problem with this reasoning is that you can twist it to justify about anything. A community needs rules just as a society does.

BTW I am kind of annoyed of the inflationary use of the word "-phobia"/"-phobic" for any kind of disagreement whether it is coupled with fear (the actual meaning of that word) or not.

I think it would be nice to see sparta developed to an extreme, even if balance might be challenging. Making it mostly eco-driven run by helots could provide both a great differentiation value and be historically accurate.

Although the current devs have already done a very good job, some maps in A24 may still be imperfect, perhaps due to the lack of balancing/symmetry or lack of naval opportunities.

Personally I like "imperfect" and asymmetric maps as they are more organic and natural. However, I understand there may be a different desire for tournaments or ranked games. Though according to the laws of statistics imbalances should even out for a greater number of games...

  11. Sounds like a good middle ground. So if there really are some missed units @Grapjas can think of, we can implement them here and there, but we can also have more generic bonuses.

I don't remember who brought up the point earlier, but I can understand from a competitive point of view that it is very time consuming to first build the wonder and then wait until the technology is researched. So maybe the bonuses should be made available instantly after you selected them - we could still balance costs and build time of the wonder itself if necessary. That way the completion of the wonder itself feels impactful and not just a way of enabling further options in the future.

    EDIT: it was @chrstgtr

Although they are less useful in a24 than before because they no longer give the the auto +10 pop bonus, so no real benefit occurs for at least 2 minutes after building even if you assume resource scarcity isn't a problem (although it usually is). So now it takes a long time to get the resources to build the wonder, a long time to get resources for the tech, and a long time to research the tech before you get any benefit.

With a unique unit i actually meant a new unit.

I got that. I just cannot think of 13 units where each of them

    • is new
    • fits to their respective civilization (maybe you didn't mean that by unique)
    • is so game changing that they deserve a wonder to be built
    6 minutes ago, Grapjas said:

Just because it's unique doesnt mean it has to be strong though in terms of attack/defense. [...] In fact, utility units is exactly what this game kind of lacks. Just an opinion though.

Agree, we could integrate more utility units into the game. But I would expect more from a wonder than utility...

    12 minutes ago, Grapjas said:

I think there can be quite a number of unique units still be added to the game if you're not looking purely for military units

Maybe you can list some, then I won't guess and misunderstand anymore...

    13 minutes ago, Grapjas said:

However, avoiding adding units because you have to do more balance work sounds like dodging work to me :P

If you talk about my badge - I am glad I received it, but I'm still no dev team member and independently from that it is a bit out of place to derive work obligations from that...

Furthermore, under economic aspects (value to effort ratio so to speak): the proposed technologies could be provided in a matter of hours... Whereas designing 13 new units is only possible if there is collaboration of several people (with most likely at least 1 dev team member)...

As I said I wanted to provide a solution that is feasible in the current environment of gameplay/balance development. I have seen too many theories, wishes, proposals that just added to the pile because no one was there to implement them.

I would be much more willing to build a wonder for a special unit instead of some boring +xx% bonus :P

The most iconic units are already in the game. E.g. it would be stupid to have Spartan hoplites only with a wonder, but there is (and should) not a better unit for Spartans than hoplites. Furthermore, new special units for each civ would need much more balance tweaking. My point was that depending on the special circumstance you are in game, you may not even profit much of a new special unit if it doesn't fit your situation and playstyle...

I understand wonders could be made more exciting. I assumed to find a relatively simple solution that can be implemented and agreed within a relatively short timeframe, ready for the next release. I agree we lack changes on an overall perspective that takes the whole gameplay into account, but any attempts into that direction failed in the last years.

Yes something along those lines, maybe a little bit more tech focused. Like a big increase in formation attack for Romans or reduced cost for Persian cav.

And yes that would be quite special, but it would give room for differentiation.

I like the idea of more special technologies, but not of tying them to the wonder. Make them available in city phase and give the wonder a boost (better: a few choices) that will benefit you no matter what your situation is. Finishing the wonder should mean something like 75% winning chance when before it was 50%.
