  2. Actually, a Flop is a measurement of computing power, not speed. A Flop is a Floating point operation. So, a one gigaflop processor can perform one billion floating point operations per second.

  3. context switch: when a multitasking operating system stops processing one task and starts another.

    You got it Natedog. :)

For the last question I was looking for INT1 (0x01 - for debugging) or INT3 (0x03 - for a breakpoint).

  4. The same reason that the majority of Americans were forced to accept blacks as equals.

The majority of Americans approved of giving blacks equal rights. The majority of Americans also approved of giving women equal rights. Recent polls have shown that the majority of Americans do not think gay/lesbian couples should be able to marry.

The point is for our government to accept homo relationships in the same vein as hetero relationships. This has nothing to do with you.

The government is supposed to reflect it's society.

But regardless, the last time I checked, murderers and thieves have the right to marry whomever they want(hetero, of course).

Not while they are in prison.

A murderer can marry who they want, but an upstanding citizen, who happens to be homosexual, can't.

Homosexuals can marry anyone they want as long as it's someone of the opposite sex.

  5. As a sidenote: many priests are homosexuals (as stated by Klaas), others think that gays do not make sin. Someone said that those people aren't true christians, but who decides this? The Pope? And for non-catholics?

    God decides.

It's a question I've often asked. Why do you feel the need to enforce your way of living on someone who is hurting *noone*. I have yet to hear a real reason.

The problem is that a minority is trying to impose their agenda on the rest of us. Why should the majority of America be forced to accept a type of lifestyle we don't approve of? We aren't preventing them from living a homosexual lifestyle, but they are trying to make us accept it as "normal".

  6. What is the difference between a switch and a hub when dealing with networking?

A hub has shared bandwidth while a switch does not. i.e. a 100MBit hub can only have a total of 100Mbit/s flowing through it whereas a 100MBit switch can have 100MBit/s per port.

Next Question: What is a parity bit?

  7. Marriage is not a right, it is a privilege.

    True, but irrelevent.

It's not irrelevant. You must earn a privilege. Sometimes it's easy to earn a privilege (e.g. turn 18 and stay out of jail to be able to vote), but other times it's more difficult (e.g. to get a driver's license you must pass several tests, have a relatively clean history of drug use, be mentally fit to drive, etc.). Homosexuals do not meet the requirements to get married, therefor they should not be granted the privilege.

  8. but these days it's the opposite thing - religion tries to change government.

That seems natural though. If a country is dominantly Christian, you would expect Christian leaders to be elected and consequently Christian influence would be introduced into the system. Similarly, if a country is dominantly Islamic, Jewish, Budhist, etc. you would expect the government to reflect that. The government's philosophies should be an example of the country's social norm.

  9. none of those reasons really convince me of allowing the gov't to continue to deny equal rights to all citizens.

Marriage is not a right, it is a privilege. A right applies to everyone with no restrictions. There are requirements for marriage, such as:

And in America it has been determined that another requirement is that marriage can only apply to a man/woman couple.
America has decided that this is the criteria, and if you don't meet these standards then you cannot get married. Why should a minority be able to dictate the criteria for the whole nation?
  10. to get back to the thread, I have always been shocked to see the President take the Oath upon the Bible ! How can a country say Church and State are separated thanks to its Constitution and at the same time, make such a religious symbol for the President !

This is the section of our constitution that addresses church and state:

    Amendment I

Congress shall make no law respecting an establishment of religion, or prohibiting the free exercise thereof; or abridging the freedom of speech, or of the press; or the right of the people peaceably to assemble, and to petition the Government for a redress of grievances.

If you notice, all it says is that congress shall make no laws regarding religion. It says nothing about the President, or schools, or local government authorities, or government offices, etc.

People have been led to believe that "separation of church and state" means that the government should not be influenced by religion whatsoever. This is completely inaccurate. The government is comprised of human beings who will naturally be influenced by their religion of choice. These people have the freedom to practice their religion and to speak their mind (as granted by the 1st amendment), just like the rest of us. Of course, certain groups (such as the ACLU) would like to rescind those rights.

  11. The major difference here, Quacker (and I'd think you'd realize this), is that victims of serial killers are (by and large) not willing participants.

What about the "gentleman cannibal" from Germany? Would that be considered normal since it was an act between two consenting adults?

In case anyone doesn't know, the "gentleman cannibal" took a willing person and hung him on meathooks, cut off his manhood and ate it in front of him. All while the "victim" edged him on. Eventually, the "victim" bled to death, but not before the "gentleman cannibal" had eaten a pound of his flesh.
