  1. Well, I know this is is VERY late reply but I just want to extend my sincere thanks to the entire team for being willing to take this enormous project in the first place. I've followed the team's progress since it was originally concieved as an Age of Kings mod on AoK Heaven through to it becoming a standalone project. (The last year or so, notwithstanding :P ) Through it all, I was continually impressed at your professionalism and willingness to include the community in the development process. As part of a mod team myself, I understand the time commitment involved in a task of this magnitude. While I think we are all disappointed that TLA has been mothballed indefinitely, I don't think anyone can fault you guys for not giving it a serious effort. I sincerely wish you all the best in whatever endeavors you may find yourselves in. (y)

  2. Lol, sort of. I'd have to say one thing that's encouraging about this game is that in spite of the seeming lack of activity for the past 1 1/2 - 2 years that the team is still continuing to work. Normally, a project like this would have been dropped long ago if the team doubted it's ability to complete it.

    Keep up the good work.

  3. I think the term you are looking for is either 'tabard' or 'surcoat'.

Overall, I like the suggestions except the knights. As you have already related, Tolkien never mentions them fighting on horseback. In fact he specifically mentions that they fought on foot in a shield-wall most of the time. I think that the lack of heavy cavalry could be a counter for the fact that Numenorian infantry would be so much better than other races (excepting the Elves, specifically the Noldor).

  4. There are many reasons that I could think of for this situation. Firstly, the Eldar (or more specifically the Noldor) left Valinor of their own free will. Thus, though they were banned from returning, they weren't really exiled.

On the other hand, the Faithful of Numenor only left their homeland to escape it's destruction in what could be termed an exile by Eru Illuvatar.

Finally, Tolkien himself describes the DĂșnedain kingdoms as being "Realms in Exile" (possibly at the end of The Sil?). In keeping with the purist theme of this game, that seems like a good enough reason for me.

    Take your pick

  5. It looks good, my only suggestion would be to move his scabbard to his right side. Being that he's left handed after losing his right, it only makes sense that he would have modified his sword belt to compensate.

  6. My basic interpretations of various references like Beorn's roar sounding like "guns and cannons" or of goblin inventions and such in the Hobbit have always been tempered with the knowledge that it was written primarily as a children's book. As such, it contains many references to real life things to help readers to visualize the story better. It has always been my opinion that Saruman's "fire of Orthanc" and Gandalf's fireworks were direct products of their superior knowledge and power. As to Dwarves? Tolkien always described them as being excellent at working with metal and stone, however I never really saw them as being a mechanically oriented race like most games and such tend to portray them. Just my 2 cents.

(Wow, I used 'such' alot in that post)

  7. I believe it mentions in the Hobbit that some dwarves were evil and even made alliances with goblins from time to time.

Also, about enslavement, in the silmarillian it says that Aule created the dwarves 'stone-hard, stubborn, fast in friendship and in enmity, and they suffer toil and hunger and hurt of body more hardily than all other speaking peoples.' and also if you remember the story of Turin: Mim did not take well at all to being bound, actually became defiant in the face of the outlaw gang because of it. Doesn't sound very enslavable to me.

  8. Will different units lose morale at different rates or will it be a blanket rate? Because the Free Peoples, elves especially, were recorded to fight to the death far more often running. Orcs, on the other hand, normally fled at the slightest sign of defeat.

  9. While I like the idea of tolls, I personally think this should be in an expansion rather than the initial release. I'm not sure I really like the idea of passwords for individual gates, sounds too confusing.

  10. "Disaster at Gladden Fields" describes the men with Isildur as being Saxon-like, (as was Tolkien's field of expertise) with the shield-wall types and such.  But other descriptions make them seem more like the soldiers from the prologue of FotR.

They are survivors of the Last Alliance so they are the same as the men in the Prologue.

For some reason, I always envisioned them, especially the Dwarves and Numenorians, having a plate and chain combo. I guess I took a little creative licence of my own.

  11. This topic just reminded me of something-is Gondor/Arnor going to have cavalry? Both kindoms were really short on horses and relied mainly on infantry.

I'm assuming that they'll at least have some. Tolkien says that when the army of the Witchking was destroyed, the forces of Angmar had already started to withdraw when the Gondorian cavalry attacked them in the rear (I'm thinking it was about 5,000 cavalry but I don't have my copy of UT with me right now). And you can't forget Imrahil and the Knights of Dol Amroth. :muaha:
