  1. Asking me? No, it's not a joke. And no, I can't just download the theme, since our school's website is badly coded, and won't work with FF. Basically I told him to use IE for that, and FF for everything else, and he doesn't want to. Quite frankly, I don't blame him.

And yeah, I think the 'Set Program Access and Defaults' actually works, though unfortunately I can't find a way to not set all MS programs as default in their respective category (IE, Outlook express, WMP, etc). Any ideas on how to fix that? I don't have his computer available to test on right now, but from a quick ok followed by a cancel I got the idea it works :)

  2. so I've got a friend who I helped clean his computer two days ago. Naturally, it was so messed up the easiest thing to do was just to do a fresh install. After that I installed firefox and told him to use that to avoid spyware. I of course set it as the standard webbrowser as well. Now, he doesn't like it and so I have to remove it. As easy as it was to set FF as the standard webbrowser, I can't find how to change it back...

I've tried Tools-->Internet Options-->Programs-->checking the checkbox which says something like; check if IE is the standard webbrowser, way down at the bottom of the page. Doesn't work, and it was already checked in btw. So what's the solution? I promised I'd fix it, and I still intend to. I just need some help :)

  3. Perhaps you could modify this so that if an IE window is opened through FF (I'm thinkin IEview) an actual IE window is opened, whereas if you try to open IE any other way FF is started? Otherwise, great stuff :D

  4. iRiver does some really good mp3 players suppossedly, but they're also expensive... they have really good music quality I hear, but usually it's the earplugs that make the largest difference, so...

  5. That's extremely cheap... I always considered fujitsu siemens to sell relatively expensive laptops (relative to that price atleast) , and seeing as this one has the specs you've just shown I'm even more shocked... Buy two and send one here :P

Can't point you to a review though :)

  6. Considering there is a "do not run in background" option in Windows Messenger, it doesn't have to be running.

I was the one who started the original thread, and I can tell you that that option did not work...

Anyway, even though I don't need this anymore, thanks brian :)

  7. I think that nothing has happened to the IBM laptops yet (as in, the lenovo takeover hasn't really had any effect yet), besides the introduction of the new tablet PC...

I've got a R51, and as far as build quality is concerned I doubt you'll get much better from anyone but IBM (T and X series use better materials). I've never heard anything negative about Dell's laptops though, except price...

  8. IIRC 6600GTs are all 128MB... Why would you want 256MB specifically? I know it looks nicer statswise, but in most cases it can't be utilized as far as I can tell...

Oh, and my Geforce 2MX400 is still running :)

  9. CPU - Let's get this straight. A 64bit CPU has none, nada, zip, zero problems running 32-bit apps. In fact, AMDs 64-bit CPUs tend to do it better than Intels (uh, discontinued?) 32-bit CPUs...Even though they're equals pricewise. Unless you can't afford anything other than a sempron or celeron (they haven't got 64-bit yet, right? I heard it was coming, but I don't think it's there yet...) you should get a 64-bit enabled CPU. Otherwise, well, then you don't have a choice, but I gather that's not the case.

Case - An ATX case means it supports ATX motherboards (that's the big ones...there's m(icro)ATX and (IIRC) p(ico)ATX as well. Usually, ATX cases will support all versions of ATX. If they don't, it simply means that there are no screwholes for the other sizes of motherboards. If you're really into an ATX case that doesn't support they mATX board you want, then (as far as I can tell) you can fix that with a drill.

  10. I used the wizard to set up the different networks, and I've clicked on that search for other comps so many times now I think it'll try to run away the next time I try (y) And yeah, they're all on the same workgroup as well.

The thing is, I've tried googling for how to set up a network with file-sharing capabilities, and all the settings that they mention are correct on the computers I've got. That's why I find this to be so weird...

  11. Both computers use the windows firewall, and it is set to allow file and printer sharing. Is there any other setting I should change? like adding ports or something?

[EDIT] So I'm at this moment moving files using my laptop, though as far as I can tell that means that the files are moving at 5.5 mbps (half of the 11 that the connection maxes out at). In other words, it's gonna take ages to move everything, so I'm still hoping you guys have a better solution (y) [/EDIT]

  12. I'm trying to move some files from one of my computers to another, so that I can do a fresh install on the first one. Now, the files are waaay to large to move by CDs or even DVDs (not that I have a DVD burner, but if I did (y)). Fortunately, the computers are connected through a router. So I figured, I'd just move the files through that, except I can't make either of the computers see each other, making it really hard to move stuff... However, I've got a third computer, a laptop connected wirelessly (the one I'm typing on right now), and that computer can see both the other ones.

It's not a possibility to move the files through the laptop, as it has a too small HDD, and is also connected only at 11mbps, instead of 100 like the others. I'm just clueless as to why the two computers I want to use don't see each other...

Both computers are running WinXP Home SP2 (the laptop is running pro, also SP2). The router is a USR 8054. Any help you can throw at me would be great (the sooner the better too, as I would really like to be able to start moving files ASAP (got a friend coming over with an Ipod to move the files that won't fit on the second computer...).

  13. let's see, Athlon 64s are definately recommended (they do compiling faster than pentiums, aren't even close to being as hot, and, well, better :P). Get a socket 939, as you then get a dual channel memory setup, as well as the fact that socket 754 is being phased out (faster than 939). If you really want dual core, be ready to pay more, and wait a while. Check this if you're really interested: http://www.anandtech.com/cpuchipsets/showdoc.aspx?i=2410 .

Most (all) motherboards today have integrated ethernet and sound. So just nevermind getting those things, save some money and spend that elsewhere :P

For graphics I hear nvidia is good on linux, so go with them. I don't know anything about harddrives really, nor memory, so I'll stop here B)

  14. Correct me if I'm wrong, but wouldn't it be possible to just delete the folder, all shortcuts, and clean the register to get rid of it? Or does the program change something else that you can't manually fix?

  15. It's not mandatory for either (I know cause I'm running pro right here with no admin pass :) I've got nothing sensitive though, so it doesn't really matter to me :))

I'm with everyone else though on wiping the HDD. That way you'll get rid of all your browser history as well Tim :P

  16. Somehow it still feels like the "old" internet. I mean, there's already filesharing going on and, yeah you guessed it, the RIAA is after them already.

On another note, I can't see any viable (legal) use for this for the average person. That is, unless the movie/music/game industry finally realize that they should be using the internet for distribution, instead of trying to shut it down. Unless that happens I don't see the use for the increased bandwidth unless you're a scientist sending gazillion of stats over the web or something. It is cool nonetheless ;)

  17. lol, or in other words, instead of playing the game, they'll set up various scenarios and test for bugs. Gameplay testers on the other hand play the game to see if it's balanced, though they'll also report bugs if they find them of course... That's how it usually works I think.
