  1. Hosted at the San Diego Convention Center as part of the 2007 ACM SIGGRAPH Sandbox Symposium...

International Game Developers Association, San Diego, today released the video and audio from When Worlds Collide.

In August 2007, more than 200 academics and professionals gathered to hear pioneers discuss the state and future of video games. From The Behemoth president John Baez (Alien Hominid) and Areae president Raph Koster (Ultima Online, Star Wars Galaxies) to Midway chief creative officer and Emmy Award winner Steve Crane (Tony Hawk's Pro Skater, The Suffering) and Disney's Junction Point Studios president Warren Spector (System Shock, Deus Ex), this discussion brought together insight from both sides of the "big versus small" divide.

  2. What characterizes a next-generation game? Are next-gen games the products of their respective platforms? Are next-gen games defined by bigger environments, better graphics, and faster animations? Or are next-gen games defined by the experiences they provide to consumers?

On Thursday, 29 March 2007, International Game Developers Association, San Diego produced a panel discussion of What Makes A Next-Gen Game? that enabled a dialogue between video-game journalists and developers. One of the largest events in the history of the chapter, the event received more than 200 attendees, representing developers and publishers in San Diego, Orange County, Los Angeles, San Francisco, and even New York.

An official video recording of the event is now available here.

  3. The following questions are covered in the candidacy FAQs. I've left this topic open in case there are any more.

    • What is the process for applying to join the Quality Assurance team?
    • What criteria is used to select candidates for the Quality Assurance team?
    • How many people are expected to join the Quality Assurance team?
    • What are the requirements of a Quality Analyst?
    • What are the requirements of a Focus Tester?
    • What materials will be provided?
    • What training opportunities will be provided?
    • How are contributions measured?

I'm also waiting for the new job application system to launch before I post the candidacy FAQs document.

  4. Sounds like an idea Fox News and Air America can get behind.

Nah, they don't make impact or create meaning. They just say what they're told to say. Much like historians... :)

"I give people the truth, unfiltered by rational argument. I call it the 'No Fact Zone'. Fox News, I hold a copyright on that term." (Stephen Colbert)

  5. To me, what we know of history consists of what others have said history to be. The accuracy of what we know of history pales in comparison to the impact we experience and the meaning we derive from the stories we tell of that history. :)

    Cringe, Paul, cringe!

Looks to be an awesome film. Gerard Butler did a great job in Attilla too.

  6. The Romans were fearsome because they were organized. Just like the Italian mob.

The Celts were fearsome because they were crazy wild people that partied like rockstars. I can attest to that!

The Vikings were fearsome because they were calm and giggled while they beheaded their foes... or friends.

  7. Yes! :)

Several major publishers have solicited inquiries; however, we have maintained that transitioning 0 A.D. to a commercial model would be a disservice to our past contributors as well as a betrayal of the community's trust in our word. We are dedicated to fulfilling our promise to release 0 A.D. as freeware.

We're not going to name names though. We prefer to keep our options open for the future! :D

  8. WYSIYG tools rarely get you very nice code... web development is one of those things that's best done by hand. It's much cleaner and easier to maintain.

The code generated by Dreamweaver is extremely clean and easy to maintain. WYSIWYG editors are also incredibly useful for prototyping layouts.

The attitude that disdains the use of tools can be likened to the attitude that disdains the use of calculators. Humans invented tools to reduce complexity and to get things done. There's no sense in disregarding tools. You just have to know when to use them.
