  2. It looks interesting. it would be necessary to see how practical a large structure is. In the case of a large structure, which is wonderful to us, it would be the only one on the map and in the center, for some king of the hill variant mode.

  3. How about a Caravanserai? Or would such a building be too large? Anyway, maybe the 3rd link for photos can serve as inspiration for you arts pros. https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wikiCaravanserai https://en.m.wikipedia.org/wiki/Sa'd_al-Saltaneh_Caravanserai https://www.qwant.com/?client=ff_android&t=images&q=Caravanserai PS: I understand that they are not really sacred places, but maybe you could regard them as important places to replenish resources and to rest and get back energy (health)?

  5. Or return to home territory. I am thinking about something like aura from civic centres, military camps and fortresses that keeps home troops fed, otherwise too much micromanagement is needed. Similarly women and traders should not depend on logistics anywhere.

  9. A temenos is often physically marked by a peribolos fence or wall (e.g. Delphi) as a structural boundary. Originally the peribolos was often just a set of marker stones demarcating the boundary, or a light fence, and the earliest sanctuaries appear to have begun as a peribolos around a sacred grove, spring, cave or other feature, with an altar but no temple or cult image. But as Greek sanctuaries became more elaborate large stone walls with gateways or gatehouses were built around important sanctuaries. The most famous sacred groves in mainland Greece was the oak grove at Dodona. Outside the walls of Athens, the site of the Platonic Academy was a sacred grove of olive trees, still recalled in the phrase "the groves of Academe". In central Italy, the town of Nemi recalls the Latin nemus Aricinum, or "grove of Ariccia", a small town a quarter of the way around the lake. In Antiquity, the area had no town, but the grove was the site of one of the most famous of Roman cults and temples: that of Diana Nemorensis, a study of which served as the seed for Sir James Frazer's seminal work on the anthropology of religion, The Golden Bough. A sacred grove behind the House of the Vestal Virgins on the edge of the Roman Forum lingered until its last vestiges were burnt in the Great Fire of Rome in 64 AD.

  10. not all civilizations built temples. in fact cults originated before temples, like animism. I have in mind that, there is not only one way to offer worship. What most closely resembles the ancient Roman cult is Roman Catholicism and its syncretism. Sometimes the places of worship have to do with the descent or sighting of a god or goddess, or simply some natural phenomenon. For example. The most ancient and the most prominent asclepeion (or healing temple) according to the geographer of the 1st century BC, Strabo, was situated in Trikala.[27] The 1st century AD Pool of Bethesda, described in the Gospel of John, chapter 5, was found by archaeologists in 1964 to be part of an asclepeion.[28][29] One of the most famous temples of Asclepius was at Epidaurus in north-eastern Peloponnese, dated to the fourth century BC.[30] Another famous asclepeion was built approximately a century later on the island of Kos,[30] where Hippocrates, the legendary "father of medicine", may have begun his career. Other asclepieia were situated in Gortys (in Arcadia), and Pergamum in Asia. From the fifth century BC onwards,[31] the cult of Asclepius grew very popular and pilgrims flocked to his healing temples (Asclepieia) to be cured of their ills. Ritual purification would be followed by offerings or sacrifices to the god (according to means), and the supplicant would then spend the night in the holiest part of the sanctuary– the abaton (or adyton). Any dreams or visions would be reported to a priest who would prescribe the appropriate therapy by a process of interpretation.[32] Some healing temples also used sacred dogs to lick the wounds of sick petitioners.[33] In honor of Asclepius, a particular type of non-venomous snake was often used in healing rituals, and these snakes— the Aesculapian Snakes— slithered around freely on the floor in dormitories where the sick and injured slept. These snakes were introduced at the founding of each new temple of Asclepius throughout the classical world. The original Hippocratic Oath began with the invocation "I swear by Apollo the Physician and by Asclepius and by Hygieia and Panacea and by all the gods ...".[33] Some later religious movements claimed links to Asclepius. In the 2nd century AD the controversial miracle-worker Alexander claimed that his god Glycon, a snake with a "head of linen"[34] was an incarnation of Asclepius. The Greek language rhetorician and satirist Lucian produced the work Alexander the False Prophet to denounce the swindler for future generations. He described Alexander as having a character "made up of lying, trickery, perjury, and malice; [it was] facile, audacious, venturesome, diligent in the execution of its schemes, plausible, convincing, masking as good, and wearing an appearance absolutely opposite to its purpose."[34] In Rome, the College of Aesculapius and Hygia was an association (collegium) that served as a burial society and dining club that also participated in the Imperial cult. The botanical genus Asclepias (commonly known as milkweed) is named after him and includes the medicinal plant A. tuberosa or "Pleurisy root". Asclepius was depicted on the reverse of the Greek 10,000 drachmas banknote of 1995–2001.[35] At the city of Miletus, archaeologists discovered a cave, under the city's theatre, which was associated with Asclepius cult. The Bethesda Pool cult thing wasn't because there was a temple. The history of the pool began in the 8th century BC, when a dam was built across the short Beth Zeta valley, turning it into a reservoir for rain water;[18][19][20] a sluice-gate in the dam allowed the height to be controlled, and a rock-cut channel brought a steady stream of water from the reservoir into the city.[18] The reservoir became known as the Upper Pool (בריכה העליונה). In the 1st century BC, natural caves to the east of the two pools were turned into small baths, as part of an asclepieion; however, the Mishnah implies that at least one of these new pools was sacred to Fortuna, the goddess of fortune, rather than Asclepius, the god of healing. There are places that are just simple natural places with mystical properties (according to the believers in these cults). Others are the sacreed grooves. A sacred grove or sacred woods are any grove of trees that are of special religious importance to a particular culture. Sacred groves feature in various cultures throughout the world. They were important features of the mythological landscape and cult practice of Celtic, Estonian, Baltic, Germanic, ancient Greek, Near Eastern, Roman, and Slavic polytheism, and continue to occur in locations such as India, Japan, and West Africa. Examples of sacred groves include the Greco-Roman temenos, various Germanic words for sacred groves, and the Celtic nemeton, which was largely but not exclusively associated with Druidic practice. During the Northern Crusades, there was a common practice of building churches on the sites of sacred groves. The Lakota and various other North American tribes consider particular forests or other natural landmarks to be sacred. Singular trees which a community deems to hold religious significance are known as sacred trees. Many small sanctuaries consisted simply of a temenos with an altar and no temple. It was almost always necessary to undergo purification before being able to enter it. The Roman legions could not enter Rome without first purifying themselves of shed blood.

  11. I too don't think it makes sense to ise ruins of ancient places of cult, as the fact that they are now ruined doesn't make you think they are quite sacred. Also mounds aren't properly sacred, and they don't seem like something you would conquer to claim victory. I would also exclude completely developed temples and such, as they would look out of place in maps otherwise deserted or almost so. I think what would make most sense are little shrines around particular features that could be considered as sacred places to the ancients, somewhere worth building big temples to the gods, but before such temples are built. Like how could it be Delphi when the first oracle established there? How may have been Olympia, when it first came to someone's mind to keep an eternal flame burning there? If you like this line of thought, wishing trees would also fit in pretty well, sacred sources also are a common feature. If we are making these various sites though, I think something in common among all of them shoud be adopted so they can be easily recognized. A circle of stones around them for instance should be enough.

  12. I'm also curious about that; I don't know of any way. ??? I've never had an ally build a single building in my territory. I guess one has to bank on the generosity of the ally. The AI is omniscient, and I too believe there's some check coded for what I'm low on. That also goes the other way round, when it requests resources it's something I have a bunch of; unpleasant when I'm saving for sth specific, like Will to Fight... I noticed that in a25 the ally will ask for resources even if it has several hundreds or even >1000.

  13. I like the idea of having Spartans in p1 and I think it is not problematic for balance. However what I consider a undesirable consequence, is that the Spartans then would only have a single type of champion and it is available in p1 Any ideas for additional champion units for Sparta or will it just be their current Spartiates?

  14. If I did not miss a step, this is what I did: Downloaded the code. Found the kushite architecture tech and changed its cost. inserted in the command line $ cd ./0ad $ svn diff --diff-cmd diff -x "-U 99999" > changes.patch That created a document changes.patch in the 0ad folder, which I uploaded to https://code.wildfiregames.com/differential/diff/create/ and now we have https://code.wildfiregames.com/D4310

  16. Take this from an article I recently read. During the second century, the empire reached its apogee geographically (under the emperor Trajan) and economically (under Hadrian and the Antonines). Behind this success, however, there was cause for concern. Emperor Marcus Aurelius fought mightily against the barbarians on the frontiers. Books on history by Pausanias, Plutarch, Athenaeus and others reflected a general feeling that the old ways were better and that something had been lost in the new Roman era. Movements such as the Neo-Pythagoreans and the Christian Encratists adopted a negative view of the material world. The question of the origin of evil troubled many, especially Jews and Christians who believed in a good Creator. As a consequence, undercurrents began to push society towards another spiritual world. The cult of ancient religions. Neopythagoreanism It originated in the 1st century BC and flourished during the 1st and 2nd centuries AD. The Encyclopædia Britannica Eleventh Edition describes neopythagoreanism as "a link in the chain between the old and the new" within Hellenistic philosophy. Central to neopythagorean thought was the concept of a soul and its inherent desire for a unio mystica with the divine. In ancient times there was a lot of respect for ancestral cultures. Rome recognized the Jews as an ancient people, and while Christians were considered a branch of Judaism, they enjoyed some protection. But this situation was ambiguous, because there was popular animosity against the Jews, especially after the Jewish revolts against Rome (the last in the 130s during Hadrian's reign). But most Christians clung to their Jewish heritage. Partly because this showed that Christianity was not something new (a major pagan criticism against Christians), but had ancient historical roots, an important fact in a culture that valued the oldest as the best and truest. Jewish Christians maintained various aspects of Judaism along with their faith in Jesus as the Messiah. Gentile Christians, while not observing the ceremonial aspects of the Law, continued to regard the Jewish Tanak in its Greek translation as Scripture.

  17. Personally I would think : - gameplays like Newbierush help a lot in my opinion - I like a lot DE (yes i'm a DE fan ) eye-candy pictures but those are also limited to the forum and little else, so they can maybe spread more around - some teasers about civs like what has been shown in AoE? (There are some small videos with a focus on Britain or the Mongols..) this could keep the momentum beside the main trailer only - work on historical campaigns for the game that can become also a powerful storytelling tool with videos/gameplay? - twitch stuff? (Idk, seems popular) What do you guys think is really effective? I'm not a heavy gamer, so I have limited knowledge of that kind of world and what spikes the interest. I'm more from the design/advertising world so that's why I personally get excited by a cool trailer or eye-candy stuff, but maybe those may have little impact outside and not being worth the effort. Just brainstorming, I don't know ..

  18. Well yeah we could definitely use more spotlight. But usually those things cost money and or a lot of time that no one has been investing so far. Given the recent activity it's a bit hard to showcase stuff.

  19. Socrates as a hero is a little strange. (He could instead have a function more similar to Han dynasty's ministers). Are the rest of the gang (Aristotle and Plato) coming with him aswell?

  22. Hi everyone, just came to tell everyone that I love 0 AD Editor, because of all the amazing Artistic sceneries that can be made with it. When I downloaded this game few months ago , I did it because I saw a Video presenting the best 10 open sources game in the world, with a visual showcase of all the games, and 0 AD was the top of the bests... As soon as I saw it... I came looking for it in a heart beat and downloaded.... Then I start exploring it and found the editor, and decide to play with it and my girlfriend came, and saw what I was doing, She never saw the little soldiers nor the castles and buildings. Only the beautiful landscape textures, and the millions of combinations that can be done to mimic reality with the editor, while I was absolutely in a trance, playing with the editor.... Then I show her the little roman soldiers, and all the other factions, their buildings, characters, the fauna....and start talking to her about the history of the age in a generic way.... And she as me fell in love with the age the game represent and all the amazing things that can be done with the Atlas engine....and suggest me the idea of making a map of Europe and the Mediterranean Sea with all the factions and cities, stiles of fauna, landscapes, to put colors, trees, make them look cool, give love to all the templates, combine them, play with them, try to make that world you are making as beautiful as you can possibly do, and beyond by pushing its Atlas editor engine to as much as you can get from it, IF YOU CAN! ...And more, if you have the time.... The experience of making a world with this engine is a mystical experience...I do really love the job you all have done...and I mean it...I have been sharing this pictures with a very few people, AFTER A POST KIDNAPPING i DID BY ACCIDENT...with no bad intentions...for real!....And I don't want to be the uncoolest guy around you guys... But I do really think, that I must share them with you all. In order to let you know you are not alone, please.. Share your pictures here too...let me see what you got, made, create....Any Good mod to recommend me??? Please let me know , so others as well, feel welcome to share them here with me, so anyone that show up in this post, so they know about too... Because, guys, at the end, this 0 AD universes is not only made to be played...but is also about giving us all...a chance to create something visually artistic, and fun to play with, have a good time. A lovely hobby to be part off. There are millions of beautiful landscapes possibilities of combinations, that can be created , by cobining templates, and playing with the low terrain and hight terrain tool... Anyone that loves visual art, specially artist or artistic oriented people, creative people, ( if they happen to be History lovers, the better,) will fall in love with 0 AD, and it's an outstanding editor engine. My scenario will never ever be as beautiful as I would like it to be visually...but I do really, hope it inspires all you modDers, map and scenario makers, so 0 AD fans like me...To make your own, and make them beautiful to look at, and fun to play in them...SHARE THEM... please, if any of you have great picks with outstanding scenery, OR A GREAT MOB SUGGESTION... Share them here, tell me why, let me know....Let all share....and play....after all, at the end....that is why we are all here, surviving the madness of the outside world of this age, Playing 0 AD while listening at this....Long Live 0 AD!
