  1. I think it's a very good idea that could attract new users (especially those - quite numerous it seems - looking for a game style close to Age of Empire). Another nice point in the AoE/AoM series is the visual enhancement of the buildings when ageing. It really gives the impression to progress in the game and to have reached a stage. But well ... it would require a lot of work and the development team is already very busy (thanks a lot to them for the incredible work done so far!).

  2. I'd like to see this person removed from the lobby. The messages are excessive and extreme and it's turning me away from hanging out in the lobby while looking for games to play. The other day they had posted about 30 messages back to back spamming the lobby and it's been like this every day I've played over the last 3 weeks or so. Any action against this user would be appreciated.

  3. Hi how are you all, i just wanted to make a post regarding Roleplay in 0AD especially with the new Alpha as i personally think that 0AD as a whole has some really great RP potential if people are willing to do it and not just deathmatch all the time, Roleplay opens up 0AD in ways you would never think were possible, i have experience of roleplaying in 0AD as i actually hosted a few sessions on Alpha 21-22 i believe and it was a huge success and so much fun to do, it just requires likeminded individuals with a roleplay passion for this to take off on 0AD i really hope it does because it would change the entirety of how 0AD can be played alongside the normal deathmatch modes. Game Settings for Roleplay Sessions: Map type: Random Map filter: All Maps Map Size: Giant Nomad (for players to choose the best possible locations to found their capital city and making sure that they are as far away from other players as possible) Disabled treasures: Yes Explored Map: No Revealed Map: No Pop Cap: 300 Starting Resources Medium Disable Spies: Yes Game Type: Conquest: Yes Capture the relic: Yes (this mode is on for the use of relics in roleplay because they can be used for funeral processions, weddings, nobles, triumphs things of that nature, each player can hold one relic and cannot capture or destroy another players relic they are used purely for roleplay and the number of relics on the map will match the number of players in the session) Game Speed: Relaxed (0.75x) (this is because of Normal 1x being too fast and unrealistic. Explanation: Use your imagination to bring the game world to life! Roleplay your chosen civilization and lead them on whatever paths you choose. Your people are not just people they are the lifeblood of your civilization and should be treated with delicate care, keep them protected and happy as no ruler would wish to incite rebellions or riots within their civilizations, ensure the prosperity of your empire by forming trade agreements, cementing alliances, make peace when at war and negotiate ceasefires with other players civilizations. Keep on good terms with historical allies or forge your own path. The possibilities are endless when your using roleplay, send gifts to other civilization's as good will or in favour of a possible treaty, send an envoy (Healer) to request a meeting with the leaders of other civilizations to engage in discussion. Use intrigue and cunning against other civilizations to spy and gain an advantage over your enemies. Meet your enemies on the chosen battlefield and give formation orders and a heroic speech to your men before engaging in battle with your foes. Host a feast for your most trusted allies. Use roleplay to create events within your civilization that have an affect good or bad, for example as Rome you could hold senatorial events or if their is another Roman player you could both engage in a civil war roleplay. Everything you do that effects your civilization must be shown in game chat, for example (Rome holds senate meeting to discuss the tax levels of its citizens due to unrest and to discuss the extension of Quintus Fabius Maximus's consulship) There are so many idea's and paths you could choose, think you have what it takes to be a Roleplayer? There are also strict rules to every Roleplay session that are their to keep gameplay fair and realistic: This is not a deathmatch style of play the goal is not to build a super army and steamroll your opponent, You must have good reason for declaring war as well as letting the whole world know (The Roman Senate has declared war with Gaul as territorial borders were not respected, the roman people feel that iron is the only language these barbarians understand), Dont force or manipulate a war declaration just because you might be bored let the session play out and use your ingenuity. When at war battles must be fought on battlefields chosen through Roleplay by the two warring Civilizations on the game map and once your army has marched there you can choose to set up a temporary camp for your men giving them time to rest and resupply before engaging in battle or move your troops into formation and take the field ready to attack the enemy should they appear, Wars are big things and therefore have more meaning in Roleplay than just attacking the enemy in force, Tactics are a big thing and can turn the tide of a battle: for example (hide some cavalry in a nearby forest ready to pounce when the time is right), small skirmishes may occur but only when raiding forces attack a village or trade route and are attacked by defending troops. Borders must be respected and not be crossed, doing so could result in repercussions for you and your civilization. Expansion must not be huge, Build closer together for max space on the map, build cities Large, Towns Average and Villages small, the game will be on Nomad as to give every player the freedom to settle where they choose and the maximum distance possible from each player and if somehow you find yourself somewhat close to another civilization then make sure to build away from them as to limit border clashes, there is a limit of 1 city (CC and all buildings and stone walls) 1 town (Houses, Storehouses, Corrals, Farms, 1 Temple, 1 Dock, 1 Blacksmith, 1 Barracks, 1 Stables, 1 Market and Wooden Palisades) and 1 small village(Houses, Storehouses, 1 farmstead, 1 corral). You cannot rush an enemy town, city or village, small villages can be raided but only by a small group of 5-6 troops and no buildings must be destroyed within the village the only exceptions are farms, peasants or livestock, roleplay must be ensured before any large event planned by players and you must let the world know of what is happening within your civilization at all times, all discussions or treaties require the players to meet on the game map with your leader and a bodyguard of up to 8 men in a disclosed location of your choosing only once together may discussions begin in in game private chat. Don't rush building your civilization take your time to plan and carefully place every building making it look as realistic and easy on the eye as you possibly can giving a unique aura to your chosen civilization and vibrance to the entire game world, if you are a tribal civilization (Gaul, Britons or Iberia then your total territory size must be smaller compared to the superpowers of Rome, Carthage, Egypt etc to add realism as tribes did not build huge cities but smaller tribal villages with only a few buildings. There is a limit of 10 champion troops per civilization, siege weapons and towers are banned, Healers built from temple's are used as Envoys/Diplomats to engage in discussions with other civilizations, you must request permission to speak to another civilization's leaders and then send an envoy to begin any form of discussion between civilizations. A wonder is allowed but must be built in your city only and cannot be upgraded they are purely for show to enhance the looks of your city capital. Players using the same civilization is not allowed with an exception for Rome being allowed to be used by two players, At the very start of a game everyone must make sure to change their diplomatic status with all players to Neutral and change their colour to match their chosen civilization in the game lobby (Rome is Red, if their are two players using Roman civilizations then the other must be blue, Carthage, Seleucid and Iberia is Black, Gaul and Kushite's are Green, Britons and Athenians are light Blue, Egypt is yellow, Macedon and Sparta are Purple, Mauryan's and Persians are Orange) make sure to change diplomatic status when at war and at peace to ensure no accidental skirmishes. Remember to be as authentic as possible to your Civilizations culture and roleplay them as they would have been in real life, (Rome must always be roleplayed as a Republic due to their troop composition) if your not sure of your Civilizations culture you can always do some research on them. Keep the game session fresh for all players with new events happening within your civilization as to give the sense of a living breathing world and most importantly have fun! If you have any questions please feel free to ask.

  7. I really enjoy some of the unique mechanics in 0ad, including the ability to capture and hold enemy buildings (even if they're of a different faction) instead of downright destroying them when attacking. This inevitably begs the question: Why not have the ability to do the same thing with people and other enemy units? Wouldn't it be fun if workers or enemy soldiers could also be made to join you? Here are a few ideas I was thinking of: Capture units on attack: At rare random intervals, when an unit being attacked is close to dying, the unit may choose to join the attacker rather than take the final blow. This could be connected to how loyal your units are to you... if you're doing a poor job and the town is under-developed or you lack resources, you could have a greater chance of your units deserting. Capture units by bribing: You can already bribe spies to share their line of sight. With this mechanic you could also bribe an enemy unit to become part of your team! The more developed your enemy is, the more the bribe could cost. Capture units by destroying their city or defeating the faction: When an enemy faction is defeated its remaining buildings are transferred to Gaia. In case the game is configured so you can take down an empire without killing all its units, any unit left alive surrenders and becomes yours. Trade units with allies: You can already send or receive resource donations to and from allied factions. It would be cool if an ally could also opt to donate soldiers when need be, meaning they allow some of their units to chance become your units. Just like buildings, captured / donated units would retain their original faction but change color and become part of your team. If the received unit has the ability to create buildings, it could additionally be allowed to create the buildings of its faction rather than of your own: This would allow the interesting circumstance where your team can have units from multiple cultures at the same time despite starting off as part of just one (eg: Romans), which is already part possible by conquering enemy buildings. What are your thoughts on having this even as an option?

  9. The guy is back under "Melusines" username. He exercises the same behavior and rethoric. I've seen many messages in lobby from him attacking various religious, ethnic and race groups (i.e. "I hate muslims", "Serbia", encouraging people to burn Serbia and many others I do not want to type), and usual talks about Jesus. Anyway, I am personally sure It's the same person (Melusines=pesem=other accounts) which would mean multiple accounts and hateful speech in lobby which is break of ToS. (I am reporting here since there is no responsive moderator in a24 lobby and to put stress on the background of the person.)

  10. I've often thought the game could have an "Empires Ascendant" mode, which is what the game is now with territories, citizen-soldiers, etc. This is the mode that is standard for the game and the mode that's used in official campaigns and what is used for ranking in multiplayer. But.... there could also be a "classic" mode where the game plays more like an old-school RTS akin to Age of Empires or Command & Conquer. Building on my "Two Gender Citizens" mod (here: I was thinking of creating such a "Classic Mode" mod for Alpha 24. Specs: Citizen-Soldier concept removed. There is now a "classic" Citizen/Peasant unit for gathering and building, and Soldiers for fighting, with no overlap of roles. Include the Two-Gendered Citizens mod so that the new Peasants/Citizens have male and female forms. No territory restrictions or bonuses. Borders completely removed. Place all Champions back into the Fortress. Rename Metal to Gold. Adjust icons and terminology to match. Make Catafalques more like "Relics" from Age of Empires 2. Capture one, place it into the Temple to get a trickle of Gold. Heroes removed as trainable units (but still remain in Atlas for scenarios and campaigns). Adjust costs and stats to be similar to Age of Empires 2. Archery Range unlocked for all civs. 4 phases, call the 4th Phase Empire Phase. Remove automatic ranking and introduce unit Upgrades (light, medium, heavy). Create an upgrade progression for ships, like in AOE1 (light, medium, heavy). Make Gold the trading and resource, like in AOE2 and AOM. 1 gatherer per farm; adjust farming rate to compensate. Capturing removed, except with specific circumstances (Catafalque Relics, for example). Anything else, guys? ========================================================== MOD IS NOW PLAYABLE. COMPATIBLE WITH ALPHA 24. https://github.com/JustusAvramenko/0-A.D.-Classic-Mode Still a work in progress. Please report bugs and suggest balancing and gameplay ideas.

  11. I spent last 2 of my evening on the implementing of the addition light system in the pyrogenesis to find implementing bottlenecks for new objects. And I found some places, but that's not the topic. How additional lighting system looks: Fully dynamic lighting. And all light sources can be attached as props (i.e. to bones): "May the Light be with you..." But what restrictions do we have? We have 2 main: The lights can't throw shadows, because performance (we can implement it, but only few powerful videocards can handle it). There can't be many light sources in one place (at least for low videocards and since we don't support deferred rendering). Because shaders have own restrictions, particularly uniform sizes. But probably it's not the real problem. So I have a question: do we need additional light sources in near releases? Would it be real useful? P.S. I found strange normal values for some model, it should be investigated (probably the shader problem).

  12. Recently a macOS 11 user reported in IRC #0ad being unable to see the polygon on the minimap, it would be helpful to solve this problem if someone with Alpha 24 on macOS 11 could reach out to @vladislavbelov or me. You would only have to install Apitrace, which is a tool for tracing OpenGL, Direct3D, and other graphics APIs. Installation and procedure is a manageable task.

  13. Sorry to be a snitch/not sorry, but there is a limit to things. I ignore this type of unprovoked bigotry and racism in the vast majority of cases. But it's a bit different if it's deemed acceptable for a regular visitor of the Multiplayer Lobby to use the crowded lobby to espouse overt religious extremism, spamming out any normal discussion people might be having, and then out of the blue turns it into a heavy racial rant as well. Read pesem's messages. There's a limit... I want to clarify very clearly that this is only a small part of a much larger rant that went on for a while. It wasn't provoked either. He just joined the lobby and started ranting about how only Jesus can save us. I guess he saw me online, and decided to go all anti-African... What kind of Christianity is that? I had one previous encounter with him, the time before last, when he was ranting even longer about Jesus, and that women in tight dresses were the devil trying to tempt us and blablabla... I asked him if he always does that in the lobby and the ranting became even worse. @Hannibal_Barca eventually muted him this time because he launched personal attacks. But here's my second problem. I originally asked if there were moderators online and @user1 responded. I asked him to ban the account based on the considerable rant he could read for himself, but he just ignored me and left again. The racist ranting continued unabated, and I notified user1 again, and told him that kids play this game. His astonishing answer was that you needed to be at least 13 years old to play, and promptly left again, further ignoring me. The racist ranting continued. So what is he saying? 13 year olds aren't kids? Hardcore racism is perfectly fine in the lobby? I should stop bothering him? How long has this nonsense been going on? Kids play this game... Africans play this game... Other non-supremacists play this game... I don't know if Pesem is a schizophrenic mad man or if he's just a super troll. I honestly don't care. This behaviour should never be tolerated, and I feel embarrassed to have to make a post about this. I'm disappointed that such behaviour is deemed acceptable, and expect this to end. Religious extremism, racism and sexism have no place in a multiplayer lobby where people get banned/muted for way less. I have to deal with Christian extremist neighbours in real life, and faced more racism (actual violence) than anyone should have to in their life. I'm going to throw one hell of a tantrum if I have to tolerate it in the lobby as well. I go there to relax. Not to find out that in fact, I'm a soulless monkey created by satan.

  17. (names are probably different in 0 A.D., those are from Fork AD) For rain, you have those ones: random/extinct_volcano.js random/rmbiome/fields_of_meroe/rainy.json skirmishes/Deccan_Plateau_2.xml skirmishes/Gambia_River_3.xml skirmishes/Punjab_2.xml You have also maps with fireflies or volcan dust. You have more chance to find nice maps in the skirmishes and scenario category. That one from @nani is nice for example:

  20. I think we can do some better work on our modding documentation. Here are some things that ought be done IMO: Improve the wiki. This is a major thing and where I think the community (y'all) can help out most. We have some resources, but it's not very up-to-date or exhaustive, unfortunately. Modding_Guide is the main page: I think the tutorials aren't very obvious, the rest of the content seems quite good, but perhaps some should be split off since it's the main 'modding hub' page. Review Mod_Layout GUI_-_Scripting_Reference < this is still somewhat relevant, but should be renamed & updated & simplified. CreatingNewUnits < This should be really useful, but it's fairly outdated & starts with the command line, which is no longer necessary ModdingGuiAndSimulation < these are, in fact, two rather different topics. It'd be good to expand & create a simple tutorial on how to create a new component Edit: in fact there is https://docs.wildfiregames.com/pyrogenesis/writing-components.html We need a "How to debug your mod" page. There is no information on how to create your own messages. Edit: in fact there is https://docs.wildfiregames.com/pyrogenesis/writing-components.html I think the high-level overview of the project & its ECS is also somewhat outdated. Better C++/JS interface documentation: Some of it can be on the wiki: How to use the range manager? How to use the Modifiers manager? & all other system/C++ components. Some of it should probably go into improving docs.wildfiregames.com Maybe we ought to auto-generate a list of 'Engine.XX' functions, too. Or at least document what exists now. We could definitely use a list of messages somewhere. Some of this only developers will be able to do. Some of this you can help with (mostly the Wiki). I think it'd be great if people added their own frustration to this list, so that we can have a good idea what ought to be added.

  22. Perhaps we can lower the wood cost of skirmishers. In early game any wood saved is critical, so 40 wood cost instead of 50 would really accelerate the boom. We can also give skirmishers a speed bonus tech. Faster speed -> faster boom. Macedon really needs this.

  23. I just want to make some on-topic clarifications again because the discussion is indeed veering of into something different. As I said, this is just a small part of the rant in question and he must have repeated those statements and variations of it several times over. The previous time I saw him ranting it lasted even longer and went into sexist, Islamophobic and again anti-African territory, with no action taken whatsoever (and I tried notifying moderators several times then as well). I notified user1 several times in the lobby and even informed, right then and there in the lobby that I will make a post about this in the forum as I was unhappy about the course of events leading up to the mute of pesem, not because some BS threshold had been exceeded, but because he started personally attacking another lobby member. The misunderstanding is a difference in what is deemed acceptable conduct in the lobby, as pesem has clearly been at it for a while, and rather than clarifying whatever action was supposedly being taken, the moderator in question took the time to give me an illogical and dismissive response instead. I could have just laughed this whole thing off. I still want to. And if it was one on one, I probably would have done just that. But in a public lobby where African kids or kids of African descent may well be reading along (let alone everyone else), for god knows how long, is honestly horrifying to me. Even kids can read between the lines... This isn't about politics or freedom of speech or moderators having to babysit manchildren. As a child I've had to physically defend myself against violent and unprovoked attacks by people espousing such rhetoric. I've faced dogs, rocks, sticks, fists, feet, spit and more, by people screaming those kind of things at me, and I'm not someone who ever picked a fight or looked for trouble. I'm also not the only person with such experiences. So excuse me if I'm a little sensitive about this. There are still people loosing their lives and their minds because of this rhetoric. pesem and his kind bring up some really bad memories for me, and others as well. It kills me that kids still have to face this nonsense today. It also kills me to have to explain where this rhetoric leads to. They're not just "words". That kind of rhetoric is a weapon.
