Hi everyone !

I'm a French student in Game Art and I'd like to create backgrounds for the game as my end of the year project :)
I intend to post what I've already done to know what you think about it and tell me what I should keep or change.
I started with the celt civilization, here's what it looks like !

Feel free to give your point of view !
(I will change the position of my character so it won't mingle with the HUD)

Looks like a good start :)

I'd lose the cross though, it doesn't fit the time frame. Maybe borrow from a Pictish stone instead?

Thanks for the advice ;)
Yes, I may  have made an anachronism so I will modify it !
I'll replace the cross with something which fits more the era
(sorry for my poor English ^^")

Hey @fabius_titus

Welcome to the forums and thanks for your interest in the game !

If you haven't already I'd suggest you download the source code and look at how our backgrounds are made.

Basically we split the image into three layers

Sky, Characters, and terrain

Each layer gets its own image hereby giving the sliding effect

Okay, I'll download it :)
Yes, Johnathan told me to make separate layers for the animation
I actually have : Sky, Terrain, Background Leaves, Character and Foreground Leaves
but I can modify them to fit the animation

Welcome to the forums!

I have one concern regarding the composition right now, and that's the lack of horizontal seamless tiling on your background and middle ground. Else we'll get some weird seams when they scroll. Feel free to take inspiration from current in-game assets as you see fit.

Good start! I'll second the request for a Pictish stone.

Okay,
I will rework the background during the week-end and next week
I'll post updates about it to let you see if it fits more :)

  • 2 weeks later...

Thanks for your advices ! :)

I changed the colour of the trees and leaves into something more autumnal and darkened the landscape by adding more shadows.
I also added motion to her "background" hair (which was already a separate layer of my character) using Wallpaper Engine so it can now be animated.

The hair can't be animated on the screen. I'm curious as to where you got the references for the stone.

Also the background rocks and leaf patches look a tad bit disconnected from the rest of the environment. I would strongly recommend strict adherence to reference material for solving these issues.

I think you may need to double check the anatomy/pose of your foreground figure as well, keep in mind detail and polish is very important for these main menu backgrounds in particular since they'll be scaled full-screen. This detail orientation is something I need to work on too, its a difficult process, and one that doesn't seem to end.

This is likely the reason why we see so few in rotation currently.
